DOES CATALYTIC CONVERTERS HAVE EFFECT ON FUEL CONSUMPTION?
HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOUR ENGINE?

First of all, what is catalyst?
In Chemistry catalysts are chemical substances that increases the rate of chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical reaction.

In Automobile a catalytic converter is an exhust emission control device that reduces toxic gases and pollutants in exhust from an internal combustion engine into less toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction that ENDS AT THE EXHUST.

They look like cray, ceramics or honey comb all coated with white substances called the CATALYST.
This catalysts are produced from expensive precious metals like Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium. These expensive metals are what makes catalytic converters target to thieves because in black market they buy them, recycle and use to produce other precious and expensive products.

DO THEY HAVE EFFECT ON FUEL CONSUMPTION?
- if your own is ok..... NO
- if you dont have at all....NO
- if you have a bad or broken one...YES and it will eventually knock your engine.
- if you're using an aftermarket type, those clay and chalk like locally constructed ones they cut like yam.......YES but its due to engine suffocation and if care is not taken it may damage the engine.
Now lets take them one by one.

Fuel combustion process in engine starts and take place from the air intake manifold, air filter, injector, nozzles, plugs down to the combustion chamber and after the combustion process the waste products goes down to the catalyst, get filtered of toxic gasses before getting discharged through the exhust.
SO SINCE ALL THE COMBUSTIONPROCESS HAPPENS AT THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER BEFORE GETTING TO THE CATALYST HOW THEN WILL ABSENCE OF CATALYST CAUSE HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION as they do tell you?

Normal, high or low fuel consumption in any engine starts from the air inlet point and Air flow meter which measures the amount of Air/Fuel mixture needed for that combustion which is around 14.5 : 1, when this value is more or less the value, the mixture will be TOO RICH (incomplete combustion with black smoke) or TOO LEAN (fast and dry combustion) therby causing high fuel combustion.
Other factors that cause high fuel consumption which some people blame on catalyst are bad spark plugs, nozzles, dirty air filter, bad MAF, bad coil, bad fuel even too much load etc.

Catalytic converters are like face masks you wear to prevent you passing out contagious substances from your nose and mouth to reduce the spread of diseases. So does wearing of face mask make you consume or give out more air or energy?
If your vehicle is consuming too much fuel please go and fix your misfiring issues, stop blaming it on absence of catalytic converters or broken exhust.

If your catalyst is damaged or stolen try replace it with the original follow come that's made with the supposed precious metals or just be a man and weld a pipe there till you'r ready for real replacement. If you go and squeeze fufu, concrete or wire guaze inside your exhust you're on your own.....infact see you see new engine.

This locally fabricated ones have killed so many engines and still killing. Infact they are next highest engine killers after bad oil pump and bad cooling system.
For the fact they are not made with supposed catalytic materials their pores are not good enough for proper respiration, they also cant withstand the high temperatures in exhust about 300⁰c - 500⁰c so whithin short time they start cracking and falling off. Even the iron wire guaze they use in padding it are not designed with tensile strength to withstand such temperature so whithin short time they burn off and crack like biscuits. Once this happens the debris blocks the exhust path and start suffocating the engine.
When this happens the engine will tend to push more fuel to power the vehicle so making the vehicle burn more fuel, run temperature with reduced efficiency.

For people driving brand new cars don't think your exempted from this especially if your living in a country with bad roads and pot holes because they crack catalysts like biscuits.

I always advice, if your engine overheats and burn gasket don't be in a haste to change the gasket. First find out what caused the overheating else what happened to the first engine will happen to the second and even the third.

HOW DO I KNOW MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS BAD OR GETTING WEAK?

1) Check engine light comes on when you scan you get codes like P0401, P0402, P0410, P0420, P0421, P0430, P0431
(meaning insufficient air flow in exhust system, poor gas circulation, secondary air injection malfunction, catalyst efficiency below threshold etc)

2. The car fails emissions test.

3. Car starts running high temperature and overheats.

4. Car wount fire well either in motion or steaming because the exhust is aleady blocked causing increased back pressure that you may be thinking your fuel pump is bad.

5. Fuel consumption increases because of blocked exhust path so your engine tends to work harder making the vehicle consume more fuel.

6. Your car may not start easily due to increased exhust back pressure or it may start and go off after some minutes.

7. You man no longer see the morning water droppings from the exhust.

8. You may no longer perceive the sweet aroma of the catalyst that smells like freshly baked bread or wedding cake when the engine is steaming.

Take charge and don't allow anybody deceive you.
