Living or Earning - Episode 2

The work we do must have a deeper meaning to us than the bills we pay. It means we might have to redefine how we understand the question: "what do you do for a living"
If you ask me, I see this question differently from "what do you do for earning"

Think about this: if there are no bills to pay, would there be no life to live?

Howbeit, the most important things in our life are not acquired with paychecks.

You can have what you do for earning but you must also ensure your living is not exclusive to your earnings.

Living must be meaningful beyond paychecks

somehow, the highest earners turn out to be those who earn from their living.

Career lessons from a special footballer who made the wrong career choice.

He was dubbed the Belgian Messi, and the stats are there for all to see: From the 2014/15 season to 2017, he was the most fouled player in the Premier League.
In four of his seven seasons at Chelsea, he claimed the club’s Best Player award. 2014/15, he was voted both the PFA and FWA footballer of the year in the Premier League.
No one took his slot on the Premier League Team of the Year between 2012 - 2017 and was also part of the UEFA Team of the Year in 2017 & 2018.

Back at home, he was decorated as the nation’s best player for 3 years in a row (2017, 2018 & 2019), and was popularly called the best thing in Belgian Football since George Hagi.

Closer to the peak, he made the Ballon d’Or 30-man list in 2017 and though not without controversy it was a matter of when not if he could one day win the biggest individual award in football. He was that good!

Probably why he thought, a move to Bernabeu would hasten his journey to the peak. But beyond a mere club switch, he had made a career decision. And maybe the wrong one!

Clubside football is fast losing passion and becoming hugely transactional but for many reasons including paycheck, fame, glory, and prestige among others, a move to Real Madrid is irresistible for most footballers. Especially if you happen to be part of the few to ever receive a bid from football’s most successful club. And for Chelsea, they would be trading their best player for €150 million. A risk worthy of taking!

2019 was the year, Deal done! This special footballer landed in Santiago with a price tag almost double of what brought C. Ronaldo to Madrid ten years back. He was also Madrid’s most expensive player.
Contract Statement:
Reported fee: €100 million
Could rise to €146.1 million due to additional fees
Wage: £400,000 per week
contract until 30 June 2024
Players statement: "I've dreamt about this since I was little, I always supported Real Madrid" and described it as "a true honor."

But all that glitters is not gold, Amidst the hype and hopes, it soon turned out it was a hazardous move, and this special player had made the wrong career choice.
At first, he arrived at Madrid out of shape and what many tagged complacency, he began to gain excessive weight and lost his athleticism and physicality - 2 factors that made him successful at Chelsea.

Amidst his loss of form, he suffered a knock to his ankle and was out for a while. He was unfortunate also in that much of his recovery took place during the initial days of the pandemic and Via Zoom meetings but that luck wouldn't change even after Covid.

Over the three and a half years he experienced 13 separate injuries, contracted coronavirus in late 2020, and on May 5, 2021, he committed an unpardonable sin. Hazard was seen in a bromance with his former teammates after Madrid had crashed out of the Champions League with a 3:1 aggregate loss to Chelsea. To the fans, he didn’t honor the badge.

Long story short, after three and half years, this special player could not turn his career around. Eventually, an agreement was reached to terminate his contract and he left unnoticed only to be remembered as "the greatest flop in Real Madrid history." Remarkably, he has also played zero official Clásico matches during his time as a Real Madrid player.
Worse still the 2023 summer transfer window just got shut and no team wanted the special player.

Career Lessons: Never stop personal development, adapt to change, manage expectations, and maintain physical fitness.
This story serves as a reminder that even the best can face career setbacks.
