10 ways to look after your mental health.

Mental health is about the way you think and feel and your ability to deal with ups and downs. Being mentally healthy doesn’t just mean that you don’t have a mental health problem.

We all have times when we feel down, stressed or frightened. Most of the time those feelings pass, but sometimes they develop into a more serious problem, and this could happen to any one of us.

1. Talk about your feelings
Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled.

Talking about your feelings isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s part of taking charge of your wellbeing and doing what you can to stay healthy.

2. Keep fit and become active.

Experts believe exercise releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good. Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep and feel better.

Exercise also keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy.

Exercising doesn’t just mean doing sport or going to the gym. Walks in the park, gardening or housework can also keep you active.

3. 3. Eat well
There are strong links between what we eat and how we feel, for example, caffeine and sugar can have an immediate effect.

But food can also have a long-lasting effect on your mental health. Your brain needs a mix of nutrients to stay healthy and function well, just like the other organs in your body.

A diet that’s good for your physical health is also good for your mental health.

A healthy balanced diet includes:

lots of different types of fruit and vegetables
wholegrain cereals or bread
nuts and seeds
dairy products
oily fish
plenty of water.

4. Drink sensibly
We often drink alcohol to change our mood. Some people drink to deal with fear or loneliness, but the effect is only temporary.

When the drink wears off, you feel worse because of the way alcohol withdrawal symptoms affect your brain and the rest of your body. Drinking is not a good way to manage difficult feelings.

Apart from the damage too much alcohol can do to your body, you would need more and more alcohol each time to feel the same short-term boost. There are healthier ways of coping with tough times.

5. Keep in touch
Strong family ties and supportive friends can help you deal with the stresses of life. Friends and family can make you feel included and cared for. They can offer different views from whatever’s going on inside your own head. They can help keep you active, keep you grounded and help you solve practical problems.

There’s nothing better than catching up with someone face-to-face. But that’s not always possible. Give them a call, drop them a note or chat to them online instead. Keep the lines of communication open. It’s good for you!

6. Ask for help
None of us are superhuman. We all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things go wrong. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help.

Your family or friends may be able to offer practical help or a listening ear. Local services are there to help you.

For example, you could:

join a support group to help you make changes to your life
find a counsellor to help you deal with your feelings or make a fresh start

7. Take a break
A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. It could be a five-minute pause from cleaning your kitchen, a half-hour lunch break at work or a weekend exploring somewhere new.

A few minutes can be enough to de-stress you. Give yourself some ‘me time’.

8. Do something you’re good at
What do you love doing? What activities can you lose yourself in? What did you love doing in the past?

Enjoying yourself helps beat stress. Doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it and achieving something boosts your self-esteem.

Concentrating on a hobby like gardening or the crossword can help you forget your worries for a while and change your mood.

9. Accept who you are
Some of us make people laugh, some are good at maths, others cook fantastic meals. Some of us share our lifestyle with the people who live close to us, others live very differently.

We’re all different. It’s much healthier to accept that you’re unique than to wish you were more like someone else.

10. Care for others
Caring for others is often an important part of keeping up relationships with people close to you. It can even bring you closer together.

Why not share your skills more widely by volunteering for a local charity? Helping out can make us feel needed and valued and that boosts our self-esteem.

It's world sickle cell disease day(SCD)

Let not call them sicklers. Warrior is a better and an accurate word to describe someone with SCD. We can remove the stigma associated with this condition. We can be the voice of the thousands of people who are diagnosed with this condition each year. So, this World Sickle Cell Day, let us celebrate the millions of people living with sickle cell disease and focus our attention on finding more treatments and inevitably a cure for this condition.

📌😳*The monkeypox outbreak*

Recent outbreaks of monkeypox have been reported across many countries, however, most people recover fully.

📍*Symptoms*
• Rash with blisters
• Fever
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Body aches & headaches
• Fatigue

📌*You can catch monkeypox through:*
• Skin-to-skin contact
• Touching infected bedding, towels, clothing, or objects
• Sexual contact

📍*How to avoid monkeypox:*
• Avoid close contact with symptomatic people
• Clean hands and wear a mask when handling potentially infected objects
• Condoms won’t prevent monkeypox, but protect against other sexually transmitted infections

If you or a loved one have symptoms and are able to, isolate at home and contact a health worker.

🌹Venous Thrombo Embolism *(VTE)*

A man admitted into hospital following a road traffic accident appeared to be making an excellent recovery. He was a well-known local boy and was chatting heartily with visitors one afternoon but by dusk he had died suddenly.

I observed this as a medical student and was shocked. I have since encountered similar cases involving relatives and colleagues of mine.

A doctor recovering from an operation that went well died unexpectedly while in hospital.

Another doctor died suddenly while recovering at home *with one leg in an orthopaedic plaster.*

A woman recovering smoothly from a brain operation was about to be discharged home when she suddenly died.

The clinical explanation for these deaths is
*Venous Thrombo-embolism (VTE).*

This is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombosis) forms in a vein. A chunk of this clot may break off and be carried in the blood stream to the lungs (this is called *‘Pulmonary Embolism ’ (PE)*.

Immobilisation due to surgery or other medical conditions predisposes to clot formation. Obesity and genetic factors increase the risk but VTE could happen to anybody.

If the dislodged clot is large enough it will cause instant death. If it isn’t, there may be time to treat PE. If untreated, death will occur in most cases.

It is not only after a surgical operation that VTE may occur.

It can occur from prolonged immobilisation, as in:

(1) Long-distance travel - more than 4 hours by air or by road.

2) Long period of bed rest in persons who are chronically ill.

Globally, venous thromboembolism *(VTE)* commands insufficient attention. This is regrettable because it carries a high mortality rate.

The best treatment is prevention.
These include:
1. Ambulation, hydration,
2. Use of compression stockings and 3. Blood-thinning injections.

These measures have been shown to be very effective but under-utilised.

The first step towards reducing the number of deaths from thromboembolism is AWARENESS. Unfortunately awareness of VTE in Africa (as in many countries across the world) is low among health professionals and the public at large.

Let us start today to raise awareness of VTE among Africans.

If you are an African reading this post please share it with your friends (health professionals and the public) and encourage them to spread it in their own networks. Together we can generate swirls of AWARENESS and, who knows, a life saved could be that of your parent, spouse, sibling, friend – or your own.

It is *World Thrombosis Month*, a month set aside to promote awareness on the dangers of *VTE* .

Please, let us share this information as wide as we can.
Thank you.

For the Queens

Ladies, mistakes dat harms Ur Vagina🍑💦

A thread👇
1. Touching it with Dirty hands 🍑✋: Wash Ur hands ✋B4 touching Ur lady part 🍑...Dirty hands ✋ mean an open invitation to bacteria & viruses which can wreck the Flora of va**na 🍑💦
2. Not peeing after SXx🍆💦🍑: Peeing after SXx will not just reduce ur chances of acquiring a UTI or urinary tract infection, but it also cleanses the bacteria that might be left in Ur va**na 🍑💦
3. Eating too much Sugar 🍬🧃🍦: Sugar is an enemy to Ur va**na health, as it can lead to yeast infection 🍑💦
4. Wearing synthetic panties 👙: Of course, synthetic panties are easy to wear, but the fact is that; they are not capable of soaking enough sweat🙅💦...Sweat is one of the major reasons why u get a fungal infection down there🍑🤞
5. Using scented soaps🧼 & spray🧴: This can disturb the PH balance of Ur va**na 🍑 & can lead to va**na infection 🍑; like "Chlamydia" 🤞💦
6. Wrong cleaning techniques 🚽🍑🧻: When it comes to washing Ur va**na 🍑💦, always go from front to back. ie; from Ur va**na 🍑 to the A**s. Going the other way round can push the a**l bacteria towards the va**na 🍑, making it prone to infections 🍑💦🤞
7. Finally...
Not changing Ur sanitary pad, menstrual cup & tampons wen necessary 🩲🧻: Plz Don't wait 4 ur pad or tampon to get soaked in period blood, as it can lead to itchiness & infection.
If u have a heavy period flow, then u must change ur sanitary napkin every 4 hours. In the case of a light period, change it every 6 hours.
For tampons, make sure you're going for a change Every 4 hours. And wen using a menstrual cup, ensure that it is clean B4 insertion to avoid infections 🍑💦🤞

Done ✔️
Thanks for reading 🤞

GOT COLD AND CATARRH?

DO THESE :

1) Wash your hands occasionally, with soap and water (to prevent transmission to others and re-infecting yourself)

2) Drink plenty of fluids and eat fruits.

3) Get plenty of rest and sleep.

4) Get warm salt water and gargle.

(Gargle is to rinse the mouth by holding the water at the back of the mouth and stirring it with your breath, just like you do when brushing your teeth).

5) Do “steaming”.

Bend over a container of hot water and breathe.

Covering yourself with a thick cloth and putting a mentholated substance (say, “Robb”) in the water is usually soothing.

No burn your sef o!

6) Taking pain-relievers (like Ibuprofen), or drugs for the feverish feeling (like paracetamol) would be very helpful.

Cough syrups will also help you breathe better and feel better.

As for vitamin C, it works if you BELIEVE it works!

NOTE: Antibiotics (like septrin, erythromycin, etc.) are not usually needed because antibiotics are for bacteria, and we are dealing with viruses here, most likely.

E make sense?🙂

HOW TO HANDLE SNAKE BITES

RUSH the person to the hospital immediately!

Meanwhile...

#1: Protect the person from further bites.

Good if you can kill the snake but don’t risk further bites.

Identify the snake if you can. (Color, size, shape, behaviour)

Take photos if you can.

All these will be important in what antivenom treatment to use in the hospital.

But, don’t waste valuable time trying to kill the snake.

#2: Calm the person down.

Fear and anxiety increase the heart rate and increase blood flow and makes the venom spread faster & wider.

70% of snake bites are harmless, and even among the 30% harmful ones, more than half of the time, their bites are harmless.

#3: Immobilize the person to reduce movement — especially of the bitten site or limb.

Let the person stay still and calm as much as possible.

Use wood or carton or any hard material to immobilize the limb (just as is done for a fractured or broken bone)

7 DOs AND DON'TS:

1) Wash the bite site with soap & water.

2) Do not tie or use anything that will prevent blood flow all in an attempt to prevent venom spread.

It does more harm than good, after all.

3) Don’t cut, or suck wound.

Gently squeeze some blood out if there’s a wound.

But don’t cut.

Don’t suck.

4) Don’t give person anything to eat or drink (especially alcohol).

5) Don’t apply ice-block or packs.

6) Don’t give person any drug or pain medicine.

7) Don’t use traditional help.

There is no substantial, reliable evidence or proof of the efficacy in snake bites.

RUSH the person to the hospital immediately!

Is this helpful?
Please share it might save lives

Does more water help prevent health problems?
A very big YES

Drinking enough water is required for your body to function in general. Several health problems may also respond well to increased water intake:

▫️Constipation(hard stool). Increasing water intake can help with constipation, a very common problem

▫️Urinary tract infections. Recent studies have shown that increasing water consumption may help prevent recurring urinary tract and bladder infections

▫️Kidney stones. An older study concluded that high fluid intake decreased the risk of kidney stones, though more research is needed (need I tell y'all how much kidney cost in the market)and honestly dialysis is no joke too

▫️Skin hydration. Studies show that more water leads to better skin hydration, though more research is needed on improved clarity and effects on acne

SUMMARY
Drinking more water and staying adequately hydrated may help with some health problems, such as constipation, urinary and bladder infections, kidney stones, and skin dehydration etcetera

24/11/2021

*WATER*

Your body is about 60 percent water.

The body constantly loses water throughout the day, mostly through urine and sweat but also from regular body functions like breathing. To prevent dehydration, you need to get plenty of water from drinking water.

There are many different opinions on just how much water you should be drinking every day.

Health experts commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon a day. This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember.🙂

I suggest you sip on water constantly throughout the day, even when you’re not thirsty.🙂
