It's World Malaria Day! With over 2 billion cases prevented and 11.7 million lives saved in 2021, weโre within reach of ending malaria with a growing number of countries approaching malaria elimination. But a global decrease in funding and increased biological resistance threaten malaria control and elimination efforts, putting both existing and future progress at risk.
We have innovative new tools and approaches at our disposal, such as the worldโs first malaria vaccine, new insecticide formulations and sophisticated genetic disease monitoring and sequencing. But despite remarkable progress, efforts to roll out essential, highly effective commodities and innovations at scale remain significantly under-resourced.
This World Malaria Day, we call for bold investments from public and private sectors to accelerate and scale up new and existing tools, to build upon the progress made over the last decade. In 2023, itโs .
FACTS!
๐๏ธSince 2000, global partnership and sustained investment has transformed the fight against malaria โ preventing 2 billion malaria cases, saving 11.7 million lives, and putting eradication within reach.
๐๏ธ While many countries came together to fight for what counts at last yearโs Global Fund Replenishment, an unprecedented shortfall of more than 50% in global malaria funding is now holding countries back from maintaining life-saving malaria programmes at current levels and reaching everyone living at risk from malaria.
TIME TO DELIVER ZERO MALARIA
World Malaria Day is marked each year on 25 April and brings together the global malaria community to highlight global efforts to end malaria, the need for sustained political commitment and continued investment for malaria control and elimination.
Today, funding shortfalls and emerging biological threats are brewing a perfect storm for malaria. Emerging biological threats threaten the effectiveness of existing tools and inadequate investment in controlling the disease in high-burden countries represents the โgreatest threatโ to gains the world has made. Meanwhile, last yearโs Global Fund Replenishment fell short of what is needed to maintain malaria programmes, scale up the latest innovations and reach everyone at risk.
Now is the time to take decisive action to deliver on our goal of zero malaria and achieve 2030 targets. This World Malaria Day, countries and partners must come together to urgently invest in programmes, innovate to develop new tools and approaches and implement national strategies to accelerate progress against this age-old disease.
Join the fight against malaria today!
