The A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) has played a pivotal role in mobilizing biodiversity data in Nigeria, according to a recent report by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), as Nigeria rejoins GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) as Voting Participant (https://www.gbif.org/news/32er80klT0dzqjQjGxzDL5/nigeria-rejoins-gbif-as-voting-participant).

Since APLORI joined GBIF as a publisher (https://www.gbif.org/publisher/6419723e-4da4-46b2-9738-2fef69fae76a) in 2021 through the Biodiversity Information for Development programme BID-AF2020-039-REG, the institute has contributed over 500,000 + records to GBIF, which is more than four times the number of records contributed by all other institutions in Nigeria combined. This makes APLORI the largest source of biodiversity data in the country. APLORI is “now unchallenged as the largest source of data about biodiversity in Nigeria.”

APLORI's data collection efforts focus on birds through the Nigerian Bird Atlas Project (NiBAP), but the institute also collects data on other taxa, such as small mammals, butterflies, and plants. Our bird data is made available through GBIF, where it can be accessed by researchers, educators, and policymakers around the world. So far the data has received 21 citations and is growing!

"We are committed to making our data available to everyone," said Assoc. Prof. Adams A. Chaskda, APLORI's Director. "We believe that open data is essential for conservation."

APLORI’s contribution to GBIF is a testament to the institute's commitment to conservation, as the data helps to improve our understanding of biodiversity and to inform conservation efforts.

A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute to establish Africa's First Center for Species Survival.

The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) and the A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) announced a groundbreaking partnership to create a Center for Species Survival (CSS) in Nigeria, located in the Amurum Forest Reserve in Jos. The official agreement was signed by the IUCN SSC Chair, Dr Jon Paul Rodríguez, and the Director of APLORI, Dr Adams Chaskda.

This agreement between the largest of IUCN’s seven volunteer Commissions and the West African ornithological Institute aims to provide strategic support and capacity in catalysing assessments, planning and action for species conservation in Nigeria, and to provide capacity and training support for species conservation assessments, planning and action across the West Africa region.

"Saving species is possible, if we act more collaboratively and strategically. SSC is excited to partner with APLORI to create the first Center for Species Survival in Africa. Together we can grow understanding, foster partnerships and scale up action to protect and restore critical biodiversity in Nigeria and across West Africa,” said Dr Kira Mileham, SSC Director of Strategic Partnerships.

The Center's main goal is to address the urgent need for regional-level knowledge and understanding of birds and biodiversity status and to undertake concerted efforts for their conservation. The Center has a dual goal of improving capacity building in West Africa while also supporting the species conservation cycle. This includes training on Red List assessment, conservation planning, and action, ultimately leading to improved conservation measures and promoting a harmonious coexistence between humans and the natural world.

"At APLORI, we believe that understanding and conserving our biodiversity is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity for a sustainable future. Through our partnership with the IUCN Species Survival Commission and the establishment of the Center for Species Survival in Nigeria, we are dedicated to catalysing initiatives that will safeguard our natural heritage, develop regional capacity, and promote a balanced relationship between humanity and the natural environment," said Dr Adams A. Chaskda, Director A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI).

CSS Nigeria will catalyse initiatives aimed at understanding the status of species and implementing conservation action plans for biodiversity across the country and developing capacity focused on West Africa. Additionally, it will coordinate diverse stakeholders in developing the first comprehensive National Red List in the region and ensure that these assessments contribute, where possible, to the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) is collaborating with an increasing number of partners to establish Centers for Species Survival across the globe. These Centers work together with IUCN volunteer specialist groups to share expertise and capacity in scaling up strategic species conservation.

🌍🐾 Celebrating World Biodiversity Day 2023 🌿🦁

Today, we come together to celebrate World Biodiversity Day.
A day dedicated to recognizing the incredible diversity of life on our planet and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
As we stand at the crossroads of environmental challenges, it is crucial to remember that biodiversity is not just about the multitude of species, but also the intricate web of ecosystems that sustain life as we know it.

Biodiversity encompasses the extraordinary array of plants, animals, microorganisms, and the habitats they inhabit.
It provides us with vital services, including clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, and climate regulation.
It is the foundation of our food systems, medicine, and countless other resources that support human well-being.
However, the Earth's biodiversity is facing unprecedented threats. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, overexploitation, and habitat destruction are endangering species and disrupting ecosystems at an alarming rate. The loss of biodiversity not only jeopardizes the natural balance but also has profound implications for human societies, including increased vulnerability to natural disasters and the potential collapse of ecosystems we rely upon.

On this World Biodiversity Day, let us reflect on the urgency of the situation and recommit ourselves to protecting and restoring biodiversity in all its forms. Every action, no matter how small, counts towards the collective effort. Here are some ways we can make a positive impact:

1️⃣ Support conservation initiatives: Donate to or volunteer for organizations dedicated to protecting biodiversity, preserving habitats, and promoting sustainable practices.

2️⃣ Sustainable living: Make conscious choices in your daily life to reduce your ecological footprint. Conserve energy, minimize waste, practice responsible consumption, and support local and organic products.

3️⃣ Advocate for change: Raise awareness about biodiversity loss among your friends, family, and community. Encourage sustainable practices and advocate for stronger environmental policies at local, national, and global levels.

4️⃣ Engage with nature: Spend time in natural spaces, observe and appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world around you. Connect with nature and inspire others to do the same.

5️⃣ Educate and inspire: Learn about biodiversity and share your knowledge with others. By fostering an understanding and appreciation for nature, we can cultivate a sense of responsibility and stewardship for our planet.

Remember, the fate of biodiversity rests in our hands. Let us take collective action today and every day to safeguard the incredible richness of life on Earth.
Together, we can build a more sustainable and harmonious future where humans and nature coexist in harmony.
Happy World Biodiversity Day 2023! 🌎🌱🐯

For the past two (2) months,a team at has been tagging the with satellite transmitters within Jos, Mangun and Bukuru,in Plateau State,Nigeria as well as WEPPA farm, Aghenebode, Edo State to understand their movement patterns.
This is a collaborative effort between and , Kalmar Sweden.
A big thanks Jonas Waldenström and Ulf Ottosson for this and for bringing out a team from Europe to train some of APLORI's staff here to undertake this.
So far, about 12 individuals have been tagged at the nest, most of whom have fledged with interesting results already trickling in. This is getting even more interesting even as the kites have began exhibiting migration signs with counts of several individuals seen in hundreds in flight.
Another amazing observation is that several individuals are still either making effort to lay eggs or incubating.
These two individuals were tagged yesterday,May 4th 2023,around Lamingo dam, Jos.

Women play crucial roles in protecting and managing natural resources and ecosystems worldwide.
Their knowledge, skills, and efforts are instrumental in ensuring that ecosystems and biodiversity are conserved for future generations.
As many of them double as primary users of natural resources, they share a close affinity with nature and understand the importance of protecting it.
Women's knowledge and practices about sustainable use and management of natural resources have been developed through generations of experience and are often passed down through cultural traditions.
At APLORI, women are active participants in our conservation initiatives at the local, national, and global levels. They play key roles in our community-based conservation efforts, such as natural resource management and afforestation programs. Their participation and leadership in these initiatives have evidently improved the sustainability of natural resource use and management and ensured an equitable distribution of benefits
amongst local communities.
Our women scientists and researchers are involved in biodiversity and conservation research worldwide.
Their work has led to important discoveries and insights into the functioning of ecosystems and the impacts of human activities on biodiversity. This is evident from their long list of international publications on www.aplori.org.
Therefore, today is another opportunity to show renewed commitment to empowering women to participate fully in conservation.
