How to flush a water borehole
The water rises along the rod on its outer side, between the walls of the borehole and the rod, with such a velocity that the broken rock fragments are carried up by this water current (direct flushing ).
Alternatively, water enters the borehole around the rod and issues upwards through the rod (indirect flushing ).

Definition of flushing
i. A drilling method in that water or some other thicker
liquid, such as a mixture of water and clay, is driven into the
borehole through the rod and bit. The water rises along the
rod on its outer side, between the walls of the borehole and
the rod, with such a velocity that the broken rock fragments
are carried up by this water current (direct flushing).
Alternatively, water enters the borehole around the rod and
issues upwards through the rod (indirect flushing).
6 Steps to Controlling
Water Loss in a Bore
Hole
When drilling in highly fractured or broken
ground, you run the risk of hitting a void or
large fracture and having your drill water
escape through that fault. You find yourself
with a dry hole and dry bore holes are a pain
to deal with. You end up drilling blind because
you are not getting any water return and you
will not get an indication that the core is
blocking. No water return also increases the
vibration in the hole, greatly increases your
drilling cycle time and, if you are in an area
with limited water resources , you will not be
able to recycle your water.
When you hit a void or fracture, you will
immediately notice that your water return
suddenly drops off. Here are some suggested
steps to try and control the water loss.
1. The best way to deal with a dry bore hole
is to try and prevent them by using drilling
fluid additives to condition your hole.

when trouble happens. Using them
beforehand can allow you to plug up small
cracks and fissures before they become a
problem
2. Identify where the fault is. You can do this
by immediately stopping operations so you
do not drill beyond the fault. If you have
already drilled past the fault, you can
always check your core as it will indicate
where the water fault occurred. You want
to identify the precise location so you can
send down the additives to the right spot,
which is just above the fault.
3. Prepare a “pill” to control your water loss
using an additive made for this, such as
DD X-Pand . Make sure you allow the
mixture to “cure” for half the recommended
time. The additives usually take about 20
minutes to absorb water and reach
maximum volume. You want to send the
mixture down when it is halfway cured, i.e.
10 minutes, so the pill will absorb the
water in the fault effectively.

The Water Borehole Drilling Process In 4 Steps
Step 1 – Hydro-geologists site the borehole
The very first thing that needs to be determined is where the water is, and how we’re going to get to it.
That’s why we employ hydro-geologists who make use of a variety of borehole drilling methods to assess the geophysical properties of the underlying area.
These are the guys that help us ensure we’re not drilling into natural hazards or man-made infrastructure (pipelines, cables, phone lines, etc).
Step 2 – Drilling and Construction
Once the hydro-geologists have helped us prep a path for borehole drilling, we follow through and construct the borehole.
It’s not as easy as Moses and the rock, unfortunately, and, contrary to popular belief, an endless supply of water won’t just surge to the surface following the drilling of the borehole; there are still steps to follow and processes to be completed.
Once the borehole has been drilled the necessary unstable lengths of the borehole are steel cased in an effort to reinforce the ‘tube’.
Step 3 – Determining the yield of the borehole
In order to most accurately gauge the yield of a domestic water borehole an aquifer test is performed.
This involves installing a test pump and pumping borehole water for a fixed set of variables; a given time at a given rate, and then assessing the test’s impact on the water level in the borehole.
Maximum yield is achieved by increasing the abstraction rate, ensuring optimum drawdown of water in the borehole.
Step 4 – Pumping and piping the borehole
The kind of pumping system and piping installed in your new domestic water borehole will largely depend on the intended use of the borehole water.
