The Igbo Culture of ịkpọpụ
Ị kpọpụ is one of such terms in Igbo lingo that cannot be given an easy, direct translation, just as it is somehow complex in its simplicity, for non Igbo to understand, and in practicality replicate or practice. One can only contextually approximate an interpretation, like to say it is about 'taking someone out', which as a normal English language expression could mean to kill someone. But here, it is directly opposite to the above, to mean or at least suggest, to take someone to another clime, with a view to teaching or helping him secure a means of livelihood, for a better future.
I Kpọpụ, is very well different from I gba boyi, which is the popular system where a lad is taken into apprenticeship in a business by an established person he serves for a period of time, usually going into years, and is thereafter settled with a start up at the end of the term of his learning. There are usually agreements that are followed, even when nothing is actually cast in stone.
In I Kpọpụ, a person, younger or older, simply follows someone, a relative, friend or just somebody persuaded to assist, to his base, within the country or abroad, to help him 'find his feet.' He could take him into his business or give him out to someone else who does the kind of business the youngman is interested in. Whatever, he serves as his guardian and mentor hence he oversees everything he does, to ensure he is well and achieved his aspirations.
Most times when people are taken out, it is an epic, destiny shaping journey. While the benefactor makes everything available within his powers, to make the beneficiary succeed, it is expected of the later to apply himself fully and with diligence to his hustings. Most times, they are taught trades or skills, or even become boyi (apprentice), depending on many factors, ranging from personal preferences to available opportunities. Of course, the conditions are usually not bed of roses.
Brief History of Ijaw
Ijaw people (also known by the subgroups "Ijo" or "Izon") are people in Niger Delta in Nigeria, Predominantly found in Bayelsa state, Delta State and Rivers State. They are also found in other Nigerian states like Ondo, Edo and Akwa Ibom. Many are found as migrant fishermen in camps as far west as Sierra Leone and as far east as Gabon. Population figures for the Ijaws vary greatly 8 million .
They have long lived in locations near many sea trade routes, and they were well connected to other areas by trade as early as the 15th century. The Ijos (Ijaws) are the descendants of the autochthonous people or ancient tribe of Africa known as the ORU. They were known by this name by themselves and their immediate neighbours. The Ijos have kept the ancient language and culture of the ORU .Their immediate neighbours to the east are the Igbos and Ibibios whom they have lived and traded with for thousands of years.

Police tear-gas protesters in Akwa Ibom
Police on Tuesday opened canisters of teargas on protesting youths who stormed the Akwa Ibom State government House, Uyo, demanding their share of five per cent of the total 13 per cent oil derivation allocation to states in the region.
Our correspondent reports that the development resulted in a stampede as they ran to take cover for their dear lives.
The youths under the auspices of Ibom Youths Congress clad in white and black attires sang war songs and matched through major streets of the state metropolis.
They were, however, dispersed by the police while trying to enter the Government House to present their request to the governor, Pst Umo Eno.
Our correspondent reports that it took the intervention of the Joint Task Force to dislodge the group from the Wellington Bassey Way end of the Government to the Ibom Plaza roundabout, where they ventilated their grievances.
Speaking to journalists, one of the leaders, Victor James, Secretary of the Niger Delta Movement, said, “We have suffered a lot; our youths have not been empowered. That is why we’ve come en masse to make sure that the Governor looks into our matter.
“We are asking for five per cent out of the 13 per cent oil derivation. And they have said they would call us for dialogue. But failure to do that we will take another step,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Odiko MacDon, explained that the teargas incident was borne out of the need to stop hoodlums trying to invade Government House from taking the laws into their own hands.
He said, “Well the truth of the matter is that they were addressed by the Commissioner of Police; the Commander 2 Brigade, and other sister agencies on the need to be peaceful.
“They were also addressed by the Commissioner for Internal Security, but they insisted that they have to access the Government House. That is why a commensurate force was used to disperse them.

Unapproved Building Demolished At Wuse Zone 6, Abuja
The first demolition of an unapproved structure in Abuja under FCT Minister Nyesom Wike happened Monday at Wuse Zone 6.
A Bulldozer of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) demolished the multimillion naira duplex built on Plot 226, in Wuse Zone 6, an unapproved land.
Mr Mukhtar Gidado, Director, Department of Development Control, said that the building was illegally developed against all warnings.
Gidado said that his team had carried out extensive investigation to ascertain the original owner of the plot, given varying claims that were being put forth by the parties.
He added that investigation revealed that the developer was not the owner of the plot, adding,”that is why we had to remove the building.”
According to him, the FCT Administration will not consider the status of any defaulting developer once development rules and regulations are violated.
Gidado said: “We demolished the duplex because somebody built on someone else’s land without valid title and building plan approval.
“We allowed the building to this stage before demolishing it because we had to follow all due processes.”
The director said that the supposed owner of the building was served all the notices to stop work, saying, “but being a disobedient developer, he continued without heeding to the notices.
“After our investigation, we have ascertained the rightful allottee of the plot, so we have to remove the building.
“We are going to consult the legal department to know the next action against the developer.”

Netizens Condemn 'Discriminatory' Cancellation Of Isese Festival In Kwara State
Nigerians have taken to multiple social media spaces to express their displeasure about the recently cancelled Isese Festival scheduled to hold on August 20, 2023.
Isese is a Yoruba term for tradition, to denote the different kinds of festivals held by adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion in Nigeria and Cuba, Brazil, the United States, Benin, and other countries.
Last Tuesday, news surfaced that the August 20 planned Isese Festival in Ilorin Kwara State had been cancelled on the orders of the State Police Command.
A statement signed by the President of the Isese Council, Oluwo Solagbade Popoola, and made available to The PUNCH, states that the festival was cancelled by the police "as a result of what they called rising tension in the state.
"ICIR is not unaware that police authorities have the power to enforce laws and regulations, maintain public order, and ensure the safety and security of the community.
"They can also, under certain circumstances, impose restrictions or place a ban on specific events or activities if they deem it necessary for public safety, law enforcement, or other legitimate reasons," the statement read in part.
Nigerians have since taken to social media to share their thoughts on this latest development. While some called the police and the state government out for their bias, a couple of others, mostly Muslims advocated the ban to remain permanent in the state.
Malcom Omirhobo tweeted; "Christians & Muslims in Ilorin celebrate their Christmas & Salah without disturbance but African Traditional Religion, Ifa/ORISA devotees & adherents are not allowed to celebrate Isese. They are coerced by the very police that are supposed to protect them. This is discriminatory."
Yemi simply tweeted, "Ilorin is breeding extremists already. Na from Ile kewu e dey starts to reach MSSN. Everything about that Islam ideology na violence."

"Client was offered an ELECTIVE (pre-planned] C/S because she has a heart condition. Her frail heart would simply NOT withstand the distress of labor and vaginal delivery! Her reply: " I need to tell hubby about all this first", and she left. Never showed up UNTIL...
"Several WEEKS after. This time, in labour; but the baby's heart had stopped beating. The baby was dead [IUFD], for days, even. When confronted, the husband was like: "I had an AGREEMENT with God that my wife will deliver normally.

Don’t Visit A*o Rock Again - Dokubo Gets Red 🟥 Card Over Utterances
There are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has barred all ex-Niger Delta militant leaders from visiting him in the presidential villa, Abuja.
It was gathered that Tinubu, in ordering the action, was disturbed by public utterances and actions of Asari-Dokubo in the aftermath of his visit to him days after he assumed the mantle of leadership of the country.
The decision was taken in the aftermath of the visit to Tinubu by the leader of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujarhedeen Asari-Dokubo, on June 16 this year.
The president was said to have resolved to distance himself from some militant leaders (names withheld) in view of his experience with Asari-Dokubo.

‘I drove uber to pay my bills abroad’ - Actor Joseph Benjamin
Nigerian actor Joseph Benjamin has revealed he dived into the taxi business to survive after he became stranded in the United States of America.
The 46-year-old actor said he relocated from Nigeria to the U.S. after someone promised him movie gigs in America, but the person later disappointed him.
Benjamin revealed this while appearing on the latest episode of the podcast, hosted by comedian Teju Babyface
He claimed that he had to work as an Uber driver in order to pay his bills, and some of his customers even took photos of him while he was at work.
Benjamin said, “I got to America on a promise that I had some gigs waiting for me. So I thought I was going to have a soft landing there. I packed up everything from Nigeria, bought a one-way ticket, and came to America.
“I was put in a well-furnished house and all of that. Then two days later, the person who I was supposed to book a deal with said to me, ‘Those our financiers have pulled out. They have an issue.’ So, I said, what do I do? He was like, ‘From next month on, you will have to start paying rent in this house.’ The amount of the one-month rent was equivalent to a one-year rent in Nigeria.
“I’m like, ‘I’m not earning any money, so what do I do?’ I don’t know what to do. So, shot into that life, I had to figure out what to do. I had nowhere to go. Nothing to turn to.
My phone was buzzing, like, ‘When are you coming back to Nigeria? We have this gig for you.’ Teju, $1,500, was all I came to America with. How do I buy a ticket to go back to Nigeria?
“My life pattern then was so disorganised in the sense that I didn’t have a proper saving culture. With all the money I was making in Nigeria, my life was a m*ss. I sold my cars and gave out like 90 percent of all my belongings in Nigeria. I was like, I’m going to America to live a good life and all of that stuff. How do I buy a ticket to go back to Nigeria? Lord, what do I do? And God said to me that ‘Welcome to the life that I arranged for you. I needed to break you away from your comfort zone so that I can build you.’
“I was like, ‘No, no, no …’ He was like, ‘Yes, welcome to it. So, here you are, now a way to earn a living. How do you move forward?’ Then, sometimes I will be in my room crying. I’m like, ‘Lord, where do I go from here?’ And for some reason, every month I get to pay the rent. I got connected to my church. And then someone gave me a car. I’m like, what do I do with the car? And they said Uber. I was driving for Uber and Lyft to pay my bills.”

What we do now is to make them pay a remediation fee and take them through regulation and compliance. We are trying to improve compliance culture. To encourage companies to make it part of their practices, to make it part of their culture, we take them through compliance. Sit-at-home over in S’East, says IPOB
The Indigenous People of Biafra said it had set aside every Monday as an “economic empowerment day” in the South-East.
The pro-Biafran group said the aim was to enable the people to mobilise resources and means towards reversing the sharp decline in the economic, educational and social sectors of the region caused by the prolonged sit-at-home.
The spokesman for the group, Emma Powerful, stated this in a statement on Saturday.
Powerful said the move followed the total cancellation of all forms of sit-at-home in the entire South-East as stated in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s handwritten letter, which was made public through his counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, few days ago.
The statement read, “Following the total cancellation of all forms of sit-at-home in the entire South-East, as clearly and unequivocally stated in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s handwritten letter, he has therefore directed the people, to henceforth, set aside every Monday as an ‘economic empowerment day’ in the entire South-East.

FIBA Women’s Afrobasket: Nigeria’s D’Tigress win historic fourth consecutive African title; D’Tigress’ coach becomes first female coach to win the competition since 1966
Nigeria’s D’Tigress have defeated Senegal in the final of the 2023 women’s Afrobasket championship.
The Rena Wakama-led ladies defeated the Senegalese 84-74 at the BK Arena, Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday. The victory makes Nigeria only the second African country ever to win the women’s Afrobasket title four times in a row.
Wakama also became the first female coach to win the competition since its inception in 1966. On Thursday, the Nigerians whitewashed Rwanda, the hosts, 79-48 in the semi-final to book a place in the finale.
The coach maintained the starting five of the previous game; Amy Okonkwo, Palla Kunaiyi-Akpanah, Elizabeth Balogun, Sarah Ogoke and Blessing Ejiofor.
The game against Senegalese was a rematch of the final of the 2019 Women’s Afrobasket and the semi-final of the 2021 edition — Nigeria won on both occasions
D’Tigress never looked like faltering from the history lane and quickly established a 19-10 lead in the first quarter. The Nigerians increased the lead with more intensity in the second quarter and were ahead by 43-31 by halftime.
The Senegalese returned from the break rejuvenated, and they clawed back the lead to 62-57 at the end of the third quarter.
The final quarter was fiercely contested, but D’Tigress dug in to secure a 10-point
victory to etch their name in African basketball history. Only Senegal, who won the biennial competition uninterruptedly from 1974 to 1981, have achieved a four-peat in the history of Women’s Afrobasket. D’Tigress won the last three editions of the Women’s Afrobasket and remain unbeaten in every African competition.
The team won the 2017 trophy in Bamako and claimed the second title in Dakar, Senegal, in 2019, before completing the three-peat in Cameroon in 2021.
