We join the world in commemorating International Youth Day. This year's theme, "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," highlights the critical role of young people in driving forward sustainable development through digital innovation.
While progress has been made in youth access to contraceptives, significant barriers still exist. Young people continue to face numerous challenges, including:
Cultural and religious barriers, such as stigma and restrictive norms
Judgmental or unwelcoming attitudes from healthcare providers
Limited access to adequate and accurate information about contraceptives
High costs
Through our various initiatives, we are working to overcome these challenges:
Mass media campaigns, sexual education in schools, and community outreaches
Subsidized contraceptive voucher campaigns
Healthcare provider training and capacity building
Digital platforms, including our website and social media channels
The Honey and Banana toll-free call center
Through these initiatives, we provide comprehensive contraceptive information to young people, offering youth-friendly services free from bias, and ensuring that cost is not a barrier. Our Honey and Banana call 7790 center allow young people to access personalized guidance and support from expert counselors and nurses without needing to visit a clinic in person.
Youths are essential partners in addressing global challenges. By involving them and supporting their health and well-being, we can create a world where every young person has the resources they need to succeed. Together, we can inspire further innovation and collaboration to achieve sustainable development.

Together, we can create a supportive community where everyone has access to the information and resources they need for a healthy and fulfilling life.
Today, the world population has surpassed 8 billion, with Nigeria being the most populous country in Africa, housing over 220 million people. Rapid population growth presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in health and economic development.
Family planning plays a vital role in addressing some of these challenges. By providing accessible and affordable family planning and reproductive health commodities and services, DKT Nigeria ensures that individuals and couples have access to a wide range of contraceptives to help them plan their families. Through media and educational campaigns and community outreaches, we raise awareness about family planning and reproductive health, empowering people with the knowledge to make informed choices and ensuring no one is left behind. Our capacity-building initiatives and collaboration with healthcare providers, clinics, and other partners enhance the availability and quality of family planning and reproductive health services.
At DKT Nigeria, we envision a world where every pregnancy is wanted. By promoting family planning, we aim to reduce unintended pregnancies, improve maternal and child health, and lower maternal mortality rates.

In honor of the late Phil Harvey, founder of DKT International, DKT Nigeria concluded its Phil Harvey family planning and contraceptive outreach in Sokoto State last month, following the initial outreach in Makoko, Lagos State. Supported by the Sokoto Ministry of Health, the event was attended by the Sarki Yaki of Sokoto and other representatives from the Ministry of Health.
The outreach provided comprehensive education on family planning, vital checks, consultations, counseling services, and free service delivery. It had an attendance of 237 women, with 176 of them taking up a family planning method at no cost.
At DKT Nigeria, we are committed to bridging gaps and addressing inequalities through our targeted outreach efforts in underserved communities across the nation.
Despite advancements in family planning, the uptake of modern contraceptive methods in Nigeria remains low at 12%. In rural communities, some women are still unaware of modern contraceptive options, and many others are deterred by myths and misconceptions. When implemented effectively, the Community Mobilizers program could bridge the gap in awareness and understanding of family planning (FP) options. This approach has been adopted by DKT Nigeria in states such as Kano, Sokoto, Osun, Rivers, Katsina, and Ogun.
DKT-trained Community Mobilizers play a crucial role in addressing the lack of access to reliable information and providing a link to quality service delivery. As members of the communities they serve, they have a strong foundation of trust, which, combined with their deep knowledge, enables them to effectively conduct house-to-house visits and educate women on FP. Using visual aids, they provide personalized, private, and confidential counseling on various contraceptive methods, and refer women interested in adopting a method to the nearest health facilities with DKT trained FP providers using referral slips.
Through their dedicated efforts, DKT Community Mobilizers are not only spreading awareness but also improving access to services and empowering women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. Their work is making significant progress on the uptake and sustainability of family planning practices in underserved areas.
At DKTNigeria, we understand that choosing the right contraceptive method is a crucial decision. Our expert Nurses/counselors at the HoneyandBanana Connect Call Centre are here to provide you with personalized, confidential advice to help you make an informed choice that suits your needs and lifestyle.

For many working women, an unplanned pregnancy could mean slowing down their career, pausing it, or giving up on their educational dreams or ambitions, depending on the timing of the pregnancy. This situation often impacts their financial abilities. For these women, family planning provides the ability to choose both when to have children and the spacing between pregnancies, helping them avoid such disruptions and enabling them to
better manage their careers and educational pursuits.
By having control over their reproductive health, women can invest in their skills development and advance in their careers, resulting in a more significant contribution to the workforce. Additionally, women who can plan their pregnancies are less likely to face health risks associated with frequent or closely spaced pregnancies, allowing them to remain active in the workforce. When women can plan their pregnancies and achieve their desired family size, they are better positioned to manage their finances. Family planning also helps women avoid the economic burden associated with unplanned pregnancies and childcare expenses, allowing them to
save, invest, and build financial independence.
Overall, family planning empowers women to participate more actively in the workforce, contributing to economic growth and development. Societies can maximize the full potential of women by ensuring universal access to quality reproductive health services and contraceptive options.

Today, we join the global community in celebrating the transformative impact of telecommunication and information technologies. The profound effect of these technologies on society cannot be overstated. They have revolutionized how we communicate, access information, and engage with the world around us.
As one of the pioneers in the reproductive health sector, DKT Nigeria has played a pivotal role in advancing access to family planning counselling services by offering telephony-based counselling from the convenience of every individual's home through our HoneyandBanana youth-friendly contact centre.
Through our innovative telephony counselling platform, DKTNigeria has contributed to breaking down barriers to accessing reproductive health information and support. Given Nigeria's significant contribution to global maternal mortality rates, it is pertinent to prioritize initiatives that promote maternal survival rates. Family planning is a pivotal tool for enhancing maternal survival, this makes it crucial to empower frontline health workers with essential skills to ensure the delivery of high-quality family planning services to women and promote increased utilization of these services. While expanding access to family planning, DKT also prioritizes continuous training and support of healthcare providers to effectively meet the needs of women in communities across the country.
Advancements in technology have revolutionized our lives, impacting various sectors, including healthcare. However, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM careers, holding less than one-third of STEM roles globally, and are seldom found in leadership positions compared to men (International Telecommunication Union). On International Girls in ICT Day, we seize this opportunity to celebrate the achievements of girls and women worldwide who have shattered biases, entered the ICT space, and are making impactful contributions despite facing challenges.
At DKT Nigeria, we recognize the importance of ICT in our work, especially in empowering young girls through our Honey & Banana Digital Ecosystem, which enhances access to family planning via a dedicated toll-free call center (7790) and social media and web-based platforms.
To celebrate International Girls in ICT Day with the theme "Leadership" DKT Nigeria conducted an interview session with the women who work with the Data Science Nigeria - AI HUB (DSN). DSN is an artificial intelligence company collaborating with DKT Nigeria on a family-planning chatbot project. These women in DSN have played a key role in this project from inception until now. The accompanying video sheds light on the collaboration with DKT Nigeria to use AI technology to enhance access to contraceptive information. Today, we stand alongside other partners to advocate for the inclusion of more girls and women in the ICT sector to bridge the gender-digital divide.
As an organization focused on reproductive health, we understand the significance of addressing vaginal dryness, specifically amongst women of reproductive age, including older women.
