THE CHILD RIGHTS
- Iyanu Elizabeth Abalo is a 300 level Faculty of Law student at the Lagos State University. WhatsApp +2348025790376.

THE CHILD RIGHTS - INTRODUCTION
Rights are the privileges enjoyed by every individual by virtue of being a human being either as a citizen of a particular country or not. Firstly, a child as defined in the Labour Act is a young person under the age of twelve and a young person is one under the age of fourteen years.

The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child defines a child as "every human being below the age of eighteen years". It is important to know that the legislation on issues partaining to children is in the residuary legislative list and as such depends on the state.

HISTORY OF THE CHILD RIGHT
The origin of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child dates back to 1923 when the founder of save the Children - Eglantyne jebb summarized the rights of children in five (5) parts. Her Declaration of the Rights of the child was adopted by the League of Nations in 1924 and the five points subsequently became known as the Declaration of Geneva. Following the aftermath of the world war II , the United Nations came up with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was adopted in 1948. The Declaration included the rights of children but was felt to be insufficient and this gave rise to a separate document known as the Second Declaration of Rights of the Child. This document was adopted in November 1959.

The history of organised child protection is traced back to the rescue of a nine years old Mary Ellen Wilson who lived with her guardian in New York. She was routinely beaten and neglected. She was rescued by Henry Bergh and Elbridge Gerry . These persons created a non governmental charitable society devoted to child protection and these brought about the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC),the world first entity devoted entirely to child protection.

WE OWE EVERY CHILD THE RIGHT TO KNOW THEIR RIGHTS. Aderonke Oyelakin

LAGOS STATE CHILD PROTECTION NETWORK (CPN) CELEBRATES HER MAIDEN EDITION OF CHILD PROTECTION WEEK TO MARK THIS YEARS WORLD CHILDRENS DAY.

Child Protection Network (CPN) is a coalition of NGOs, CBOs, FBOs, government agencies and other stakeholders working to prevent and respond to CHILD ABUSE (Sexual, Physical, emotional, neglect and any form of maltreatment of a child).

CPN Lagos was established by UNICEF in 2011 and is further strengthened by chapters across the 20 LGAs in Lagos. Chapters also exist in almost all states in Nigeria.

Its members work together to prevent and respond to cases of child abuse.
CPNs primary vision is to achieve a state where all children are protected against all forms of abuse and exploitation as enshrined in the state legal documents and our mission remains the integration of a sustainable collaborative approach that addresses issues of child welfare.

In a well attended press conference by CPN members and other stakeholders, the Chairperson of the event Ms. Bose Ironsi said “First, it is to make the child rights law known in all communities and second, to ensure that the provision of the law relating to the rights and welfare of children in Lagos state is observe and third, to end violence against children in all the states of the country.

Speaking at the programme, the Lagos state Coordinator of CPN, Aderonke Oyelakin said "most parents and guardians violate the child rights laws because they are ignorant of it, adding that the group was positioned to ensure mass awareness of the situation during the event. Most of the children do not know they have rights and this also applies to most parents that are violating the rights of their children innocently. And because of this, CPN wants to ensure every child and parent/guardian gets the needed information; to collectively protect the rights of children in Lagos State".
