Parable of the Naira Part 2

In the Parable of Talents we see a novel dimension of God - God the venture capitalist/ businessman. It is as valid as the other dimensions of God - God the Scientist, God the Government and God the Benevolent. Relationship with God in each of these dimensions is governed by rules. For example, if you want to relate to God as government you have to recognise the rules of sovereignty & righteousness. Righteousness is a constitutional principle. As sovereign God can be brutal. But as God the Benevolent he can be soooo merciful. Same thing goes for business relationship. There are rules. If you breach the laws of capital you're not going to succeed. It's why those we consider sinners excel in business but the Christian who is fasting and praying does not. If the "sinner" follows the laws of capital he'll succeed. If the "spiritual" man does not he'll fail. As venture capitalist God will give you the opportunity to prove your worth, but if you don't he'll reallocate your capital.

Notice that capital is not equally allocated in the parable. The allocation of capital was based on capacity. The less the capacity the lower the capital allocated. The reason God tells you not to despise days of small beginnings is because he's testing your capacity. Build more capacity and he'll allocate higher capital. Capacity matters. When you ask some people what they read they'll say the Bible and motivational books. But what happens after you're motivated? You don't go for business seminars, don't read business magazines, or watch business media. You don't read up biographies of successful business men and women. How then are you going to build capacity! The two guys who doubled their capital didn't fast and pray. They simply applied the laws of capital. In performing they qualified themselves for higher capital allocation. Build your capacity. Perform. (To be contd.)

Jesus was a maverick. He once used a Harvard Business Review case study to drive home a spiritual truth. This was the Parable of the Naira. It is classically known as Parable of Talents. Talent was a currency. It's a venture capital case study.

In this parable we meet God the Businessman. Hitherto we had met God the Scientist (Genesis), God the Government (Exodus) and God the Benevolent (Gospels). Here was a new typology.

The story goes that a venture capitalist (God) gave capital of 500k, 300k and 100k to 3 blokes. The capital was allocated according to capacities. That tells us to build our capacity to manage risk and capital if we want venture capital. Capital is allocated according to capacity.

The guy with 500k traded and doubled the money. So did the 300k guy. The 100k guy refused to assume risk and refunded the money as is. In his estimation there was no loss. Of course there was a loss. Inflation had eaten into the money, the exchange rate had gone crazy, so much so the Central Bank decided to change the currency to reduce the Naira in circulation. And of course money has opportunity cost. The venture capitalist said so. He said the least he could have done was to put his money in an interest yielding account in a bank.

When you read the story you'll discover the great impediment this gentleman had was his ideology. He didn't believe in capitalism. He told the venture capitalist, "Look, sir. I know that you are a hard man to please and you’re a shrewd and ruthless businessman who grows rich on the backs of others." He's spewing socialist ideology, but he collected money from a capitalist, an equity fund manager.

There are many lessons from the story and we're going to discuss them but clearly you can't do business with a non-capitalist ideology. We see this problem in many shades. Some give out their capital in the name of doing good and some do in the name of looking good. Some give credit to the undeserving. You need to sort out your ideology. Business entails hard decisions. You must grow your capital, not lose it. And you must be willing to take risk as a businessman. (To be continued).

Parable of the Naira Part 3

We're looking at the Parable of Talents, trying to decode an unadvertised dimension of God - God the venture capitalist. In this blog we begin the examination of the laws of capital.

This is the first law of capital: God does not take business risk he only takes finance risk. What this means is, coming up with your business idea is your responsibility; managing your business is your responsibility; who you hire is up to you. Even if you discuss your business idea with God you'll still bear responsibility for it. From the parable we see God did not get into the nitty-gritty of the businesses of the 3 guys he financed, all he wanted was capital appreciation. He wants financial performance.

You have to think through your business idea, ask fundamental questions: What is this product? Will customers buy it? At what price point can I sell it? Is this business scalable? Are there competing products? What is my unique advantage over others? What innovation can I bring to the market? Who is my customer? What does the customer want? How do I brand my business?

Note: If your business can't make money it's not a business, it is a not-for-profit organisation, a benevolence. The profit motive is critical in business. If you want to do good with your business don't plough into your capital. Make money and use it to do good. You don't please God by giving out your capital.

Then there's the issue of risk. God was incensed with the guy who was risk averse and buried his capital: "That’s a terrible way to live! It’s criminal to live cautiously like that!" (MSG) You've got to venture. No venture no gain. There'll never be a perfect condition to start a business. You take calculated risk. You check the upside and provision for the downside.
