NORTHEAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION UNDERTOOK FACILITY ASSESSMENTS TOUR OF MAIDUGURI FLOUR MILLS COMPLEX.
.....PROFESSOR MARTE HUSSAINI CALLED ON NEDC MANAGEMENT TO CONSIDER OTHER PRIVATELY OWNED COMPANIES IN THE STATE.

Management of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) on Wednesday, visited the Maiduguri Flour Mills Complex to assess the working capacity of the company and how it will render its assistance to resuscitate the ill in the factory.

Borno Flour Mills factory was established in the year 1983 by the Administration of the Late Mohammed Goni.

The Executive Governor of the State, who was ably represented by his Chief of Staff informed the NEDC management that his Boss the Executive Governor of State was unavoidable absent from attending because he was in Abuja for an important political function but one of the 10 Facts Agenda of Governor Umara Zulum's administration is the development of the private sector because there no way to grow the economy without driving the private sector to provide job opportunities for our youth.

He used the opportunity and extended his Excellency's heartfelt gratitude to the NEDC for all the support and assistance it has been rendering the state, including the consideration to support the Maiduguri Flour Mills, which is one of the major factories of Borno State, others are the Neital Shoes Factory, the Red Bricks Factory, he then appealed to the management of NEDC to extend the same gesture to other privately owned companies in the State, such as the privately owned Oil Mill, some automated Bottled Water Companies, provided there will provide jobs for the people.

He called on the management of Maiduguri Flour Mills to put good use of these opportunities and prove to the world that they can revive the company and reminded the flour mills management that they can not do it on their own without the support of the Government.

Welcoming the Chief of Staff to Borno State Governor Professor Isa Marte Hussaini who represented the State Executive Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum mni, Fnse during the facility tour of Maiduguri Flour Mills by the management of NEDC, the Chairman Governing Board of the Maiduguri Flour Mills Alhaji Hamza Saidu, informed the Chief of Staff and management of NEDC that the company is a Limited Liability Company registered with Corporate Affairs Commission and jointly owned by Borno and Yobe State Government's, Flour Mills of Nigeria Lagos, Lake Chad Development, NNPC, Cooperative Unions of Borno and Yobe States, Individuals such as families of Goni Askira & Sons, Adamu Badejo and Others.

According to the Chairman of the Board, the company has a production capacity of four hundred and fifty tones (450 tons) per day and is capable of employing one hundred and sixty (160) people but due to the insurgency and the Covid-19 pandemic, some of it's partners technically withdrew their partnership which drastically affected the operations of the Company.

However, the company opted for the production of Maize flour which is a staple food for many of our people here in this part of the country, which reduced its production capacity of 450 tons per day to 50% of its production capacity up to date, this according to him is due to the conversion from the production of flour from Wheat to Maize processing.

However with the return of peace in the State, and to restore the lost glory of the company, the management of Maiduguri Flour Mills has approached Nigeria Flour Mill Limited to activate their relationship so that the company will resuscitate and expand it's production of Wheat flour and other products like Pasta and Noddles which will increase the profitability of the company with the hope that the owners will smile back to the Banks.

He however raised the hope that with the coming of the NEDC and presence of the most respectively the host state, Borno, the cog in the wheels of the company's progress will be overcome through the support that will be offered to resuscitate the factory.

In his speech the Managing Director of NEDC Alhaji Mohammed Alkali described the factory as one of the most organized and viable factories in the state when it was established, he commended the company for still standing despite the challenges it is facing and is great courage that the company converted its production to 50% of Maize processing instead of relying on wheat processing which by now the company would have been closed with all it challenges.

He said one of the commission's mandates is to look around and take statistics of failing industries in the region to see which one it can resuscitate to create employment and for the flow to continue.

He described their presence in the factory with representatives of the National Assemblies and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, disaster management, and social services as a very important step towards assisting the factory and assured the company that the commission will patronize the company.

Others who spoke include the representative of the Minister of Humanitarian Disaster Management, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Sani Gwarzo, who assured the management of the Flour Mills that a durable concrete Memorandum of Understanding and sustainable plans will be put in place in the partnership and promised to inform his Minister of the good things he has seen for further patronage from the Ministry.

Amongst the NEDC team that visited the factory are the Chairman Senate Committee on Special Duties, and the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs, who represented the chair, Hon. Hajiya Hadiza Bukar Abba Ibrahim.

The visit was one the several other engagements undertaken by the management of the NEDC in the state.
