12 REASONS WHY YOU ARE NOT GETTING MUSHROOMS FARMING RIGHT
NUMBER FIVE
STERILIZATION
When we talk of contamination, the process of sterilization is crucial. It doesn’t matter if you are sterilizing substrate for your blocks; for your Spawn or for your culture media, if you are not following protocol, it will have a high influence on your production.
As a beginner, you will likely either sterilize for too long or too short. If you are sterilizing for too long, then, for example, the media gets dry or burns. If you are sterilizing too short (which is either a sign of impatience (mistake number 3) or not knowing what you are doing, then there will be high level of contamination left in the substrate, and your mushrooms have a hard time growing because it has to compete with the contaminants.
Asides sterilizing for too short or too long using the wrong sterilization method for your production can cause problems as well. For example, you can use pasteurization to sterilize your substrate. Even if you want to grow oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sp.). But keep in mind that oyster mushrooms are primary decomposers, and pasteurization done improperly can lead to decomposing your substrate. If this happens you will end up with a lower yield.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying you cannot or should not use this method, but you should be aware of the details. More details about sterilization and its impact on your yield alongside other information about mushrooms can be found in our manual, “Easy steps to grow mushrooms“. 8 ways to expand your Mushroom growing business.
Do you really want to take your mushroom growing business to the next level?
One way to really increase your sales is to increase the types of products you are offering to sell.
As much as you don’t want to put too much work into producing a giant catalog of products, to avoid getting overwhelmed.
We recommend experimenting with these to see which will get more sales for you in your area.
1. Fresh mushrooms.
This is the most basic way to sell mushrooms. This doesn’t require any time to produce a value-added product like the other items on this list.
Simply harvest your mushrooms and pack them up for sale.
2. Dried mushrooms.
Dried mushrooms are particularly good if you find that you have surplus of fresh mushrooms at any point in time.
Fresh mushrooms have a short shelf life. Drying them can extend their shelf life to weeks or months.
3. Mushroom jerky.
Adding some soy sauce, vinegar and spices to your dried mushrooms can transform them into mushroom jerky.
This specialty product is increasing in popularity with vegetarians as an alternative to beef jerky.
4. Supplements.
Medicinal mushrooms like reishi or lion’s mane can be dried, powdered and put into capsules.
5. Mushroom kits.
Selling mushroom kits allows people to enjoy watching mushrooms grow in their own home, while you make some cool cash.
It also makes your job easier and shortens the growing cycle, since you don't need to fruit them yourself. Win win😁
6. Ready-to-fruit substrate.
Supply other growers in your area with substrate and make it easier for them to grow their own mushrooms.
Be aware that you might be creating more competitors for yourself if you decide to go this route!
Although if you prefer mixing and bagging up substrate compared to incubation and fruiting, you could turn this into an entire business on its own.
7. Mushroom farm tours.
Farming mushrooms is seen as a quite rare and mysterious business. Many people may never stop to think of where mushrooms come from.
Children and adults alike may want to come visit your farm and see what your day-to-day operations look like.
You can consider adding a small gift shop at the end where they can buy mushrooms, kits and other products.
8. Educational workshops.
Schools and day camps may be willing to pay to have you come in and give a demonstration on how mushrooms grow.
Or a teacher may make it into a field trip for their students to come visit your Mushroom Farm.
How to turn 2ml of spore fluid to 16kg of Grain Spawn
To keep increasing (multiply) the mycelial mass, mycelial networks can be transferred from one colonization vessel to another larger one.
For example, you could inoculate a small jar or bag of grain with an initial culture and allow that jar/bag to become fully colonized.
You could then break up that colony and transfer it to six or seven fresh jars/bag of grain under sterile conditions.
You would allow each of these freshly transferred jars/bag to colonize as well.
Finally, the contents of each of these jars/bags could be transferred to a spawn bag containing 5 pounds (2.3 kg) of grain.
In the end, you would have turned 2cc of spore fluid or liquid culture into 35 pounds (16kg) of grain spawn, capable of producing many kilograms of mushrooms.
How to make Grain Spawn.
Grain spawn generation involves a number of basic steps.
First, you’ll choose the jars to use and prepare jar lid filters, which allow air into your jars during colonization.
Next, you will have to choose a grain. Any grain you choose requires similar processing, but each has individual characteristics that you should know about before you decide on one over another.
Because most grains have a hard outer shell and low water content, you will have to hydrate the grain before you use it.
After hydration, the grain must be sterilized in a pressure cooker.
After you fill your jars with hydrated grain, inoculate them and allow them to colonize. Finally, you will have to decide how to use your grain spawn. You can, for example, make a grain-to-grain transfer, transfer the spawn to a bulk substrate, or make a casing.
