In an interview with BeIn Sports, 'Les Bleus' coach Didier Deschamps expressed his disappointment at Kylian Mbappe's third-place finish in the 2023 Ballon d'Or.
Runner-up in the World Cup with France and scorer of three goals in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, Kylian Mbappe had to be content with third place in the 2023 Ballon d'Or. Despite achieving his highest ranking, the Frenchman was visibly disappointed.
In an interview with BeIn Sports, 'Les' Bleus coach Didier Deschamps continued to maintain that the PSG star deserved to win the most prestigious individual award, given his recent season. He also took the opportunity to express his incomprehension at the Ballon d'Or votes.
"He deserved to win it. It's a disappointment that he came third. After that, these are votes by journalists from all over the world. I'm not saying that Messi didn't deserve it or that Haaland didn't deserve it. He's young, but with what he's achieved, he would have deserved it. I don't have to console him. He's disappointed. After that, the votes... These are votes that come from all over the place. I was surprised, to say the least, and even a little more surprised by some people's votes. Not putting Mbappe in the top five is really... I'm not going to use the word dishonesty, but it's not far off all the same," he said.
As a reminder, the three criteria used by France Football for the Ballon d'Or are individual performance, collective performance and accumulated honours, and the player's class and sense of fair play.
What teams need to qualify from Champions League groups
The UEFA Champions League is past the halfway stage, with all eight groups starting to take shape.
This is the final season of the multigroup format, before it becomes a 36-team competition with all clubs in one league table.
We take a look at who can seal their places on matchday five, and how the qualification picture looks.
The top two teams in each group qualify for the round of 16, the third-placed clubs drop into the Europa League knockout playoff round, and those who finish bottom are eliminated.
Qualified for round of 16: Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Real Sociedad, Bayern Munich
Tiebreakers:
1) Points
2) Head-to-head points in games involving the tied teams
3) Goal difference in head-to-head matches involving the tied teams
4) Goals scored in head-to-head matches involving the tied teams
-- If the above tiebreaker initially involves 3 or 4 teams, it is reapplied to resolve any remaining tiebreaker among fewer clubs
5) Goal difference in all group matches
6) Goals scored in all group matches
7) Away goals scored in all group matches
8) Wins in all group matches
9) Away wins in all group matches

11) UEFA club coefficient.
Group A
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 29: Galatasaray vs. Manchester United, Bayern Munich vs. FC Copenhagen
Dec. 12: Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen vs. Galatasaray
Bayern Munich have qualified as group winners.
One point separates the other three teams in the group, and nothing can be decided for second place on Matchday 5.
Manchester United make the trip to Galatasaray knowing they will be eliminated with a defeat, or with a draw if FC Copenhagen beat Bayern Munich.
Group B
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 29: Sevilla vs. PSV Eindhoven, Arsenal vs. Lens
Dec. 12: PSV Eindhoven vs. Arsenal, Lens vs. Sevilla
Arsenal top the group and will be through with a win or draw at home to Lens. The Gunners can also go through with a loss if PSV Eindhoven are beaten. A victory will seal first place.
PSV Eindhoven will advance if they beat Sevilla and Lens lose to Arsenal, as the Eredivisie side hold the head to head between the two clubs.
Lens cannot qualify on Matchday 5, but would be eliminated with a loss at Arsenal if PSV Eindhoven win.
Sevilla will be out if they lose at home to PSV.
Group C
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 29: Braga vs. Union Berlin, Real Madrid vs. Napoli
Dec. 12: Union Berlin vs. Real Madrid, Napoli vs. Braga
Real Madrid have qualified for the round of 16 and will top the group with a win/draw at home to Napoli next time out.
Napoli will be through if they win at the Bernabeu, or if they draw and Braga draw or lose, of if they lose and Braga lose.
Braga will hope to take it to the final day, when they make the trip to Napoli. However, they will be out if they don't better Napoli's result on Matchday 5.
Union Berlin have been eliminated and need at least a draw away to Braga to stay in contention for the Europa League.
Group D
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 29: Benfica vs. Internazionale, Real Sociedad vs. FC Salzburg
Dec. 12: Internazionale vs. Real Sociedad, FC Salzburg vs. Benfica
Real Sociedad and Inter Milan have both qualified for the round of 16.
Top spot will be decided when the two teams meet in Italy on the final night.
FC Salzburg hold the Europa League place, and they will secure it if they better RB Leipzig's result on Matchday 5.
Group E
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 28: Lazio vs. Celtic, Feyenoord vs. Atletico Madrid
Dec. 13: Atletico Madrid vs. Lazio, Celtic vs. Feyenoord
Atletico Madrid are top of the group and will be through on Matchday 5 if they win away to Feyenoord.
Lazio will qualify with a win at home to Celtic if Feyenoord lose to Atletico.
Feyenoord cannot qualify on Matchday 5, but will be eliminated if they lose and Lazio win.
Celtic must win both their remaining matches, hope Feyenoord fail to beat Atletico, and Lazio lose to Atletico, to have any chance.
Group F
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 28: AC Milan vs. Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain vs. Newcastle United
Dec. 13: Newcastle United vs. AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund vs. Paris Saint-Germain
A very tight group with just three points separating the four teams.
Borussia Dortmund are top and will be through with a win in Milan.
Paris Saint-Germain are one point behind in second, and will book their place with a win at home to Newcastle if Dortmund win/draw in Milan
In third it's AC Milan, who cannot go through on Matchday 5 but will be out if they lose to Dortmund and PSG beat Newcastle.
Newcastle, bottom of the table, will be eliminated if they lose to PSG.
There is still a scenario that sees all four teams finish on eight points, and the places decided on group goal difference.
Group G
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 28: Young Boys vs. Red Star Belgrade, Manchester City vs. RB Leipzig
Dec. 13: RB Leipzig vs. Young Boys, Red Star Belgrade vs. Manchester City
Man City and RB Leipzig have both qualified with two games to spare. City will secure first place in the group if they win/draw at home to the Bundesliga club on Nov. 28.
Red Star and Young Boys are both stuck on one point and are left to battle it out for a place in the Europa League. The two teams meet in Switzerland next up, and if there's a winner they will seal third place.
Group H
Remaining fixtures
Nov. 28: Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Antwerp, Barcelona vs. FC Porto
Dec. 13: Antwerp vs. Barcelona, FC Porto vs. Shakhtar Donetsk
Barcelona, on nine points, missed the chance to book their place on Matchday 4 when losing to Shakhtar, but will secure it with a win at home to FC Porto next time out. A draw will also be enough if Shakhtar draw/lose against Antwerp.
FC Porto also have nine points and will be though on Nov. 28 with a win in Barcelona if Shakhtar draw/lose against Antwerp. A draw for FC Porto is also enough if Shakhtar lose.
Shakhtar still have hope with FC Porto to come on the final day, and they cannot be eliminated on Matchday 5 as the head to head against Barca is level. However, the likelihood is they will need to win both matches to finish in the top two.
Antwerp have been eliminated and must beat Shakhtar to have any chance of Europa League football.
Argentina and Roma attacker Paulo Dybala has revealed that Jose Mourinho 'loves' Lionel Messi despite him regularly having a few digs at the Argentine over the years.
The legendary Portuguese manager has never coached Messi, but has long been an opponent of his, with Real Madrid in La Liga as well as on several occasions with teams he has managed in the Champions League.
The now-Roma manager has long held the opinion that his countryman Cristiano Ronaldo is the better player of the two, even criticising Messi for his lack of defensive work. However, Dybala has put to bed any idea of the two feuding, with him stating that Mourinho called him after they won the World Cup and made his feelings towards Messi known.
Dybala revealed to Tyc Sports: "When the final against France ended, I was in the traditional doping room, then I got to the locker room, I grabbed the phone to talk to my family and I had five missed calls from Mou. I think I called him first then my mother.
"He was very happy because he loves Argentines. He always tells me wonderful things about Di Maria and Messi too, he loves them very much. All the Argentinians have given him something more in their teams and he speaks very highly of everyone. He has great affection for all Argentines.”
In interviews throughout his time as a manager, Mourinho has stated that he believes Ronaldo to be the superior player over Messi. Mourinho once said: "I keep saying it’s harder to be Cristiano than Lionel Messi. I’ll tell you: Messi grew up in the team he plays for now; with the teammates, he plays with now. Cristiano came from England to a team that was losing."
In a 2012 interview, he take a swipe of Messi's lack of defensive work, while stating that the Argentinian is 'protected'.
He said: "One plays centre forward and the other is a winger. Messi is about 50 metres closer to the goal and has less defensive work. How can a winger score the same amount of goals as a centre forward does?"
On Ronaldo, he said: "This is a winger that defends, a winger that ends the game in the 94th minute with a sprint to chase Pedro in a goal scoring position. This is a player that, in dead ball situations, comes 20 times to the defensive area. He is very important in the defensive setup and he is not protected."
The debate between Messi and Ronaldo has been less of an intense one since the former won the World Cup alongside Dybala in 2022 - a year after winning the Copa America as the first two trophies he'd lifted with his national team.
The Premier League's Independent Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled the referee and the VAR were correct to award Newcastle United's winning goal against Arsenal on Saturday -- but the officials missed two red cards.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was furious that Anthony Gordon's winning goal was allowed to stand by referee Stuart Attwell, with three separate VAR checks for the ball being out of play, a foul on Gabriel by Joelinton and offside against the goal scorer. On all three checks the VAR, Andy Madley, could not find conclusive evidence of an offence.
Arsenal as a club doubled down on their criticism of referee on Sunday, issuing a statement in support of Arteta.
The panel's findings, seen by ESPN, said on a 4-1 vote that "although Joelinton does have his hands on Gabriel, there isn't enough to award a foul as Gabriel had made an action to play the ball before any contact," while also upholding the view there wasn't enough proof to cancel the goal on the two factual offences.
However, the panel was unanimous that Kai Havertz should have been sent off for Arsenal in the 36th minute for his challenge on Sean Longstaff as it was "a very dangerous challenge and the type of tackle that needs to be eradicated" -- a decision which would have altered the direction of the game.
Bruno Guimarães' arm to the head of Arsenal's Jorginho in the 45th minute was also a missed red card, but on a split 3-2 decision.
The panel has five members, made up of three former players and/or coaches, plus one representative each from the Premier League and PGMOL. It was set up at the start of last season to give an independent assessment of decision-making rather than relying on the views of PGMOL or the clubs themselves. The judgement is intended to provide an arm's-length assessment of all major match incidents.
Elsewhere, the decision to award a mach-winning injury-time penalty to Sheffield United against Wolverhampton Wanderers was also unanimously viewed to be incorrect -- the second time the VAR has incorrectly failed to overturn a spot kick against Gary O'Neil's side in consecutive weeks.
All other refereeing decisions last weekend, including those in the Tottenham Hotspur vs. Chelsea game, were assessed as being correct.
