President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the cancellation of the automatic deduction of 40 percent from federal universities’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Tinubu made this known on Friday at an ongoing 75th Founder’s Day ceremony of the University of Ibadan (UI) in Ibadan.
President Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, said the policy implementation is ill-timed, adding that universities are struggling.
In his speech as the Visitor to the university, Mr Tinubu pledged his commitment to the reform of the nation’s education sector as the bedrock for national development.
He said: “The 40 per cent IGR automatic deduction policy stands cancelled. This is not the best time for such a policy since our universities are struggling.”

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the adoption of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for the conduct of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
This was contained in a statement signed by the acting head,Public Affairs Unit of WAEC, Moyosola Adesina, and released on Monday, November 13, 2023.
According to the statement, the new innovation would kick off with the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates in February 2024.
The statement reads in part: “In line with global best practices, the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to inform the general public, and all its stakeholders, that it has concluded plans to migrate its WASSCE for Private Candidates Examination Diets from Paper and Pencil Test to Computer Based Examination (CBE).”
The 72-year-old institution is the oldest examination body in the West African sub-region, and has consistently maintained its integrity as its results are accepted by global institutions for admission and other opportunities.
