FUTO STUDENTS' SOCIETY OF JOURNALISTS
FSSJ-SUG/2020/03

OUTCOME OF MEETING BETWEEN THE DEAN AND STUDENT LEADERS.
The Dean Students Affairs Unit, Prof Chikwendu Orji, held a meeting yesterday [05/03/2021] with the SUG, JOURNALISTS, STUDENT LEADERS, MSRC, JCCF, MAN O WAR, ICPC as regards to matters arising or/and negative happenings on Campus, and ways to curb them, as student leaders proffered possible solutions.
After a short opening prayer by the SUG President, Comr. Timothy, and a brief charge by the Dean Of Student Affairs, Prof. Chikwendu Orji and University Director Of Administration, the Dean Of Students Affairs requested the opinions of the student leaders.
The remarkable areas pinpointed by the congregation of student leaders include:
1. Revitalization Of The Guidance and Counsellor Unit
Student leaders expressed concern over this unit, and suggested that such a unit be brought down to the department in order to feel its effectiveness positively on the life of students that may be in need [be it physiologically, psychologically, spiritually, academically or/and otherwise].
The Dean Of Student Affairs, Prof. Chikwendu Orji further stated that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. F.C Eze introduced IN LOCO-PARENTIS–which serves as a Guidance and Counsellor programme for each department.
2. Cohabitation Issue
Students, especially those residing off-campus should embrace a good living, giving the neighborhood access to visit or check on them for future security purposes. The act of living or sleeping with the opposite gender in the name of "Freedom/Privacy" should be put aside, as this act has singlehandedly resulted in unnecessary privacy and difficulty to be checked-on by fellow students.
3. Hostel Standard Of Living
In a bid to control the ungodly activities by students off-campus, the student leaders didn't fail to remind the school management represented by the Dean of Student affairs and Director Of Administration of the substandard Hostel experience.
Student leaders claimed that students residing in the school hostels, especially females leave the Hostels for lodges (sometimes, in odd hours), so as to experience comfortability, privacy, standard or working facilities not provided by the school. However, unfortunately, in a bid to "enjoy" the aforementioned, become victims or partakers of unjust activities such as:
—Unwanted Pregnancy
— Rituals/Madness
—Involve In Hard drug intakes
—Suicidal Operations [etc]
The Student leaders present assured the Dean Student Affairs, Prof. Orji that if the school management could double her efforts towards making sure that students are comfortable living in school hostels, a large number of the student population will see no need to leave hostels for lodges, thereby preventing such attacks.
4. Improvement Of The School Medical Unit
Furthermore, the student leaders complained that the operations of the FUTO medical unit is however, close to substandard, as vital facilities and indifference on the side of the health workers are on the increase whenever there is an emergency.
Nevertheless, the Dean of student affairs, Prof. Orji received compliment by the student leaders on behalf of the FUTO MEDICAL UNIT, for a successful operation that brought back to life, a dying student few days ago.
5. Revitalisation Of School / Departmental / Faculty Orientation
Students leaders beckoned on the school management, departmental and faculty heads to see to it that Student Orientation, especially for Year I students be taken serious, with facilities (majorly halls etc) needed for a successful orientation adequately provided.
As this has a vital role to play towards repositioning the minds of students, letting them know the actual reason why they're in FUTO, thereby enlightening them, and indirectly prohibiting them from involving in ungodly activities in or/and off campus.
6. Issue Of Missing Scripts
Student leaders outlined that issues like missing scripts and other unnecessary stress on the students diminishes the morale of the student to survive, thereby instigating fear, depression and suicidal thoughts in their minds. Student leaders advised the Dean of Student Affairs to look in that.
In response to this, the Dean of Student Affairs, assured them that the school management has looked into it and has deviced a method to curb such. Using his department for instance (Physics Department), he stated that no student in the department has experienced the issue of missing script, of which few student leaders in such department spoke in support.
He ended by outlining that there was and is already a technique to curb such by the school, and it's only a matter of time, it would circulate to the other departments in FUTO.
7. Constant Electricity / Power Supply
The Dean Of Student Affairs, Prof. Chikwendu Orji announced that very soon, FUTO would enjoy 2/4/7 power supply (NEPA), as RE- 33KV Line has been drawn to the school by FUTO Alumnai.
However, he made it clear that upon energisation, only those dwelling in FUTO and its environs (specifically, hostels) would be beneficiaries.
