La Gilead schools operate in Rumuesara Porthartcourt and provide a top quality education that has turned kids who could not read into better readers, better students, and better problem solvers.
ππΌ We'll support you with full payment for your child's school fees for next term. π Yes, we will, we keep to our words - you won't pay any part of the school fees.
π€·π½ββοΈ We know how hard it can be to provide quality education for your child. If you are a mother in PortHarcourt, you certainly can imagine all the fees involved when a new session begins. π Even worse, some of you buy expensive textbooks and make the sacrifice to pay all the fees completely, only for your child to come back home not being able to read and write well.
π This was not the case for Mrs. F. Tony. Some years back, we supported her with this scholarship program and she was able to afford quality education for her children. Now her two boys, Destiny and Prince can pick up any textbook and read fluently.
ππΌ La Gilead Schools has been supporting parents for several years and has helped kids who had challenges reading and writing become better readers/writers.
If you live around Eneka, PortHarcourt, and consider joining our school this September, we will support you by taking care of the whole school fees cost for the first term of every one of your kids. ππΌππΌ Send us a message right now with your phone number to indicate interest and book a free tour of our school.
π€ If you do not live around our school or do not want to join our school, you can still receive financial support by referring someone you know, especially a parent whose kid is having a reading/writing challenge. ππΌ Send us a message right now, and we'll tell you how to be part of this campaign.
ππ½ Has your child been having challenges improving his/her reading? We know how challenging and frustrating it can be. But don't give up - you would look back several years from now and smile as you see your child running to your room reading every book available. But that won't be possible without some effort. So with a busy schedule you already have as a parent, can you really improve your child's reading while at home? Yes, you can. π‘ Here are five tips to help you get started.
1. π‘ **Plan a good routine**
Pick a time of the day, and be consistent with it every day. 30 minutes per day is good enough and won't eat into your busy schedule, it is the same amount of time it takes to bathe and dress your child. But don't give up if 30 minutes is too much. Start with 15 minutes daily, and you will find the motivation to increase it later. The secret is that it has to be done daily, that is what makes information stick to our brain. ππ½ So set a reminder right now to start this weekend.
2. π‘π‘ **Make good use of online resources**
Search for videos on YouTube and apps on your Play Store/App store on how to improve your child's reading. π You will be surprised to know that they are many useful resources out there. Start with Jolly phonics app. Jolly phonics app has helped thousands of parents improve their child's reading at home, and was created by parents themselves. We have a special class at La Gilead school for helping kids who can't read and write and this app is what has helped us along with our curriculum. ππ½ Download the app from your App store, it is totally free. The app will make steps 3 and 4 below easier for you.
3. π‘π‘π‘ **Start with sounds**
Start with sounds of the alphabet. π£οΈ If your child can understand how to turn letters into sounds, then he can read anything, spell anything and even write anything. For example, you have to teach him that "a" is pronounced "aaahhh" and "s" is pronounced "ssss". You have to teach him gradually how to associate each letter with sound and vice versa. But do not worry about what sounds you would teach and how to go about it, the Jolly app we explained above got it all covered. Use the app to find different sounds and teach your child each sound step by step.
4. π‘π‘π‘π‘ **Make it easy for them to remember**
We remember things better when we use our five senses. Do you remember what you were doing the day you had your first child? π Of course, you would remember most details. But do you remember what last two weeks Wednesday's date was? π€·π½ββοΈ Most likely not. The point? ππ½ Don't just teach your kids letters and sounds. You must do three additional things. First, associate the sound with a picture your child can remember e.g, associate "aaahhh" with "ant". Then, always show your child pictures to remember the sound, e.g, show them a picture of an ant. Then, help your child practice a song that contains the sound. The app we talked about, along with other apps on the app store can help you do all of this. It already has saved pictures, recorded sounds and songs along with stories to help your child remember what he learns.
5. π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘ **Make it fun and encouraging for your child to learn**
Remember the last time you were trying to achieve something and someone complained about it? π€·π½ββοΈ Nobody likes that, do they? π Neither does your child. You have to learn to use encouraging words on the kids because kids thrive better when they are praised π€ π€ π€ . You can add small gifts and treats as incentives for finishing a task. If a child gets too bored, you can play videos or games on reading or spelling that motivates them. You can find games like that on the app, or come up with your own games. This is an important tip because sometimes you would get frustrated, and if the class becomes frustrating and boring from the onset, it may never work out.
**Summary**
So to summarize, how can you get started in helping your child to improve his/her reading? ππ½ Set an alarm right now to take action this Saturday by 5 pm, or whatever time and day you choose. Save this article for later or share it to have it on your timeline. Show it to your partner and have a discussion with him/her to see if it is something that can be planned. Download the Jolly Phonics app right now and see how it works. Play a song from the app with your kid right now and see if he/she finds it interesting. By doing so, you can kickstart his interest and discuss when you will be starting. Promise to buy him candy if he makes himself available for another song. π€ And with these, you have gotten started already.
