HEM ALLOWANCE

Hem allowance is the margin of fabric added to the hemline ( end of the fabric/ pattern) in order to achieve a clean- finished hemline.

Hemline allowance is determined by the design/style of the outfit and also fabric weight . This varies from 0.5 to 2 inches. As a general rule, the wider and fuller a skirt/ gown/ outfit, the smaller the hem allowance and vice versa.

SEAM ALLOWANCE

Seam allowance enables you to sew outfit pieces together and to attach different parts such as, closures, trimmings, facings and collars. Seam allowances are added to the sewing edge around the pattern pieces and preferably included when the pattern is placed on the fabric or on a pattern piece before the pattern is cut out.

The allowance can vary from 0.5inch to 1.5 inches depending on the fabric structure, fabric weight, the intended seam finish and garment design. that being said, it is essential to always discuss this with your clients as Nigerians like large seam allowance😀

Also note that seam allowances affect the way the seam and structure of the entire outfit hang. Smaller seam allowance are easier to handle and are less bulky and the sewing result will be more accurate than with a large seam allowance.

INTRODUCTION TO PATTERN DRAFTING

Pattern drafting is the craft of making a paper plan for a garment or dress. The plan is the first step in the design process.

Pattern making begins with the draft of the basic dress foundation. The basic dress is the very foundation upon which pattern making, fit and design are based.

The basic dress is made up of three basic blocks:

1. The basic bodice block
2. The basic skirt block
3. The basic sleeve block .

This class is going to be in series as we will look at each of these blocks and how they are drafted. In our next class, we'll be drafting the basic bodice block.

HOW TO READ THE
MEASURING TAPE

The measuring tape is one of the most useful and indispensable tools in sewing. A tape measure is used primarily for taking body measurements, drafting patterns as well as measuring fabrics. It does not matter how correctly a garment is constructed, how expertly the pattern is cut, or how skillful the tailor, the results can only be as perfect as the measurements.

There are two main systems for measuring length- the Imperial System of measurements where things are measured in inches, yards and feet and the Metric System of measurement which uses millimeters, centimeters and meters.

In this class, we'll learn how to read the measuring tape using the imperial method. The markings on th imperial method are based on the principle of 1/8 or 1/16 inch division.

Now take a measuring tape and count the lines in between 0 and 1. There are 8 lines .

The first line becomes 1/8=0.125
The second line becomes 2/8= 1/4= 0.25
Third line becomes= 3/8=0.375
Fourth become=4/8=1/2= 0.5
Fifth becomes=5/8=0.625
Sixth becomes=6/8=3/4=0.75
Seventh becomes=7/8=0.875
Eighth becomes 8/8=1
