The difference between HTML Document and Other Word Document
A word document created with an extension of .doc can be opened by any word processor and the document can be modified, or deleted. In word document, you create document with headers, paragraph, italic, bold and emphasized texts and when they are printed they come out as they were typed.
But, if you export this same file in a .txt format and view it in a browser, you would realize that the text loses its formatting. The texts will clog together an the font will be one chosen by the browser. So, how do we get the browser to display the document as we intended? That's where HTML comes in. (Hypertext Markup Language)
HTML is the language of the Web. It is the language web browsers understand. For browsers to understand the HTML language, it uses tags present in HTML to know how to display the contents.
For example,
In word document, we could have two paragraphs of text.
London is the capital city of England.
Paris is the capital city of France.
When you save this and preview it in any word processor (like, Ms Word) you find out that the formatting will be same. The two paragraphs will remain as different paragraphs. But, when viewed in a browser, the two paragraphs will collapse into one line of text.
London is the capital city of England. Paris is the capital city of France.
Why couldn't the browser display it as two paragraphs? There was nothing to tell it how to display it that way.
HTML tags tell the browser how to display the contents in them. And, this is what is called Markup.
So, in HTML the previous example will look something like this:
London is the capital city of England.
Paris is the capital city of France.
The paragraph tag tells the browser to display these two texts as paragraphs.
