BEYOND TRANSACTIONAL PRAYER: DEEP REFLECTIONS ON THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST AND THE NEED FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT IN CHRISTIAN NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS - By Pst Dele A Ilesanmi-Bamigbade, PhD
The current move in our religious life seems to be incongruous to, a sharp detour from, the divine instructions. Our current tilting towards or rather tripping into the transactional theology has downplayed the relational theology. This, in no small measure, has devastating effects on the spiritual life of the church.

International Mother Language Day is observed worldwide annually on 21st February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. This was the initiative of Bangladesh and approved by UNESCO General Conference on 17th November, 1999. Although this has been observed throughout the world since 2000, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly with the adoption of UN resolution 56/262 in 2002. The theme for this year is “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society”. This theme, under which this writer chooses to discuss “The Loss of Mother Tongue: A Parental Factor”, is quite apt and relevant to the current reality in Africa, especially in Nigeria where linguistic diversity has become a variety of life but yet to find expression in our educational curricula at different educational levels.
No doubt, so much has been written on the indigenous language or mother tongue issue in Nigerian educational sector. It is crystal clear that Nigeria is a pluralistic society with diversity of mother tongues. This is, perhaps, due to what the linguists called cladogenesis and anagenesis which, of course, is a divine arrangement that is beyond human comprehension. A type of this is found in the Book of Christianity, Genesis 11. To give the truth a clapping hand, no other issue has been visited with so much controversy and criticism within the ambit of educational discourse in the political phenomenon, now called Nigeria, ever since its existence in 1914 than that of the mother tongue.
