STUTTERING DISORDER (STAMMERING) IN CHILDREN
Dear parents, children do not stammer(stutter) because they want to speak like their friends.
There are 3main causes of stuttering in children:
CAUSES OF STUTTERING
1. Hereditary: stuttering can be passed down from one generation to another. So if your child suddenly starts stuttering you might want to look at your family tree to see if a family member stutters/stuttered at some point in life.
2. Developmental: this stuttering occurs in most children as they develop their speech and language. It is common for children between ages 3-5 to stutter while trying to find the right word to express they're feelings or when trying to plan and execute speech (string words together to form sensible sentences).
If between 3&5 your child starts stuttering and there's no family history of stuttering then there's nothing to worry about. All you need do is relax and give that child your full attention so as to reduce the anxiety. Do not help them complete the sentence/word instead give them your full attention and place an arm on your child's shoulder so as to ease the tension.
However, if the stuttering is persistent for over 6months seek professional help from a Speech-language pathologist.
3. Neurogenic: some kind of stuttering occur due damage to the brain or as a result of underlying health conditions such as seizure disorder/epilepsy, dyslexia etc.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS STUTTERING
1. do not yell at the child/correct the child/help the child complete the difficult word and sentence.
2. do not act like they're stuttering at all so they don't become aware of the error. If a child- toddler especially becomes too aware that their speech is erroneous it will cause then to be more anxious when they have to speak and they'll rather withdraw and speak less. Some times the stuttering which may have been a developmental one initially while but become 1 that will require speech therapy to fix.
3. Give your child your attention when they're speaking with you.
4. Work on your child's confidence and self esteem.
5. Wait for 6 months to see if your child will get better.
6. If your is still a stutterer after applying 1-5, then seek professional help. You can DM me on how to get linked with the SLP nearest to you.
Love and protect the boy child 💕
Happy international boy-child day.

AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
How to know the early signs
Did you know you can identify the signs of autism as early as when the child is 6months?
Did you know you can actually start working with that child as early as possible?
You really don't have to wait until the child is 3+ before you start an intervention. The earlier you start an intervention the sooner you help manage your child's signs better. Watch this video to know how.

It's World Hearing Day 2022 Yippeee!
Preserve your hearing by preventing excessive exposure to loud noise for your little ones and yourself.
Excessive exposure to noise greater than 80dB can lead to an irreversible destruction of hair cells within the organ of corti and when this destruction occurs the hearing acuity of the victim becomes impaired.
If your work exposes you to loud noise you can reduce the impact by wearing ear muffs while at work.
Preserve your hearing for life
International Cochlear Implant Day
Cochlear implants are usually recommended for individuals with severe - profound hearing loss. It helps give meaningful access to sounds. A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged areas of the cochlea and may provide improved hearing abilities for speech discrimination, understanding and the perception of music and environmental sounds.
Happy International Cochlear Implant Day!
Congratulations to the newest Speech-language pathologists and Audiologists who got certified yesterday.
I wish you well in your chosen path.

Happy World Epilepsy Day!
Epilepsy is one of the causes of speech-language disorders in children and adolescents. This is due to the damaging effect seizures have on the brain. Seizures may lead to a temporary or progressive damage to the brain of a growing child.
It is common to find children with epilepsy having speech-language disorders ranging from stuttering, cluttering, apraxia, aphasia and even mutism.
Epilepsy is also known to affect the cognitive development of a child. Children with seizure disorders may have specific learning disabilities or sometimes intellectual disabilities.
This is why we clinicians usually advice parents to seek medical help when they have a child living with epilepsy. Medicine will help halt or reduce the frequency of the seizures.
If you'd like to know more about seizure disorders, how it affects a child and what to do you can follow Dr. Chiggy's Seizure Support Foundation page.

How to spot a stroke FAST
F- Face: is a side of the person's face drooping?
