Historical Facts About Nigeria's Democracy Day.
On June 12, 1993, Nigeria held its presidential election, which was widely considered to be one of the freest and fairest elections in the country's history. The two main candidates were Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Bashir Tofa, representing the National Republican Convention (NRC).
The election was significant because it brought together Nigerians from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, and there was a high voter turnout. The initial results showed that Abiola was leading and had widespread support across the country.
However, before the final results were announced, the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, who had annulled the election, suspended the process and declared the results null and void. This decision sparked widespread protests and civil unrest across the country, as Nigerians felt their democratic rights had been violated.
The annulment of the June 12 election led to a pro-democracy movement and further political turmoil. General Sani Abacha seized power later that year and ruled Nigeria with an iron fist until his death in 1998.
The significance of the June 12 election lies in its symbolization of democracy and the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria. It is often seen as a turning point in Nigerian history and a catalyst for subsequent democratic movements and reforms in the country. In 2019, the Nigerian government officially recognized June 12 as Democracy Day, a national public holiday commemorating the election and its significance in Nigeria's democratic journey.
Happy Democracy Day Nigeria and Nigerians
