7 BENEFITS OF EVERY DAY READING

Perhaps the history of reading began with human beings seeing footprints of people or animals on the ground and giving meaning to them. The footprints, for instance, could mean the hyena had passed through this field, or the boys had spent time playing on this sand. The footprints of the hyena and those of the boys became the ‘book’ or ‘newspaper’ from which people learned about events which occurred even though they were not present at time of the occurrence. At a later stage, people began to use symbols like using arrows to show directions, and sketches of objects to communicate ideas or preserve what they didn’t want to forget.

Today people read text from books as well as electronic devices like phones, TVs and computers to get messages, knowledge, information and much more. This write-up examines 7 benefits of every day reading.

Every day reading is not reading for passing examinations of learning the steps to be followed to prepare a kind of a meal for breakfast. It’s reading done on a continuous basis on most days of the week even if it takes thirty minutes of the 24 hours you have in a day. The benefits of this kind of reading include the following:

1. Improving your general knowledge: Having general knowledge turns you into a well-rounded human being conversing with friends and other on a variety of topics. This will make people to admire and respect your views. Well-read people are often interesting persons to relate with.

2. Expanding your vocabulary: The more you read, the more your vocabulary improves and the better you can express your own thoughts, views and feelings. Reading any type of book can improve your vocabulary to an impressive extent and enable you acquire more self-confidence when sitting in a group with an educated audience.

3. Boosting your memory capacity: When you’re reading, you’re training your mind to focus on new information and take it in. This improves your analytical skills and memory. In addition to what you get from reading a non-fiction book, you’ll be taking in a significant amount of knowledge from novels and short stories. Whenever you read them, you must retain a great deal of information regarding the narrative and subplots of the stories, the settings, the characters and their relationships, etc.

4. Improving your writing ability: Reading improves your spelling of words because the more times you see a word written, the more easily you’ll remember how to spell it. It also improves your grammar and style because as you read the work of experts, you often imitate or adopt what you see in their master pieces. Catherine Winter writes, “The more you read, the better your writing skills will become. You would tend to focus on various aspects of writing that would allow you to write more effectively than others.”

5. Having access to free entertainment: When you read, you often take you mind to a different world through a well-written book with buying air ticket of seeking for a visa. Your mind can travel from a city in Nigeria to jungle near the Amazon forest in Brazil. Reading will also stop you from going to cinema to watch films or spending money to reach amusement parks, all for the sake of entertainment. When you read a good novel or travelogue, you get entertained by your imaginations about the characters and the places they visited because you adapt them to your tastes, experiences, and wishes.

6. Strengthening your analytical thinking skills: Another remarkable benefit of reading every day is that it can improve your analytical skills. Reading mystery and detective novels, for instance, helps you develop skills that can assist you in problem-solving. If you don’t consistently train your mind to think over issues or solve problems, your cognitive talents may begin to deteriorate, but by reading every day, your mind can remain robust and healthy.

7. Providing you with inner tranquility and peace: When you read some books, especially spiritual texts, they bring you an immense amount of inner peace and tranquility even if you don’t have money in your wallet or bank account. Reading helps you to forget your worries.
