The first black Africans to compete in the Olympics were Tswana tribesmen from South Africa
August 30 1904, two Tswana tribesmen, Len Tau (Len Taunyane) and Yasmani ( Jan Mashiani), they were referred to as LenTau and Yasmani because officials could not pronounce their surnames, became the first black Africans to compete in the modern Olympics when they ran in the Summer Olympics men's marathon held in St Louis.
They had been in St Louis on a Boer Ear Exbibit in Louisiana Purchase Exposition held alongside games when they decided to enter the marathon at the last minute.
Tau ran barefoot on an insuitable course and over dusty roads, so dusty that it caused many of the athletes to collapse.
Tau finished ninth and Mashiani came twelfth. This was a disappointing to Tau as many observers were sure he could have done better if he had not been chased nearly a mile off course by aggressive dogs.

WINNING THE MEDAL IS NOT ALWAYS THE ULTIMATE - A True Story
Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race. A Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand. Realizing what was going on, Ivan Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A reporter asked Ivan, "Why did you do this?" Ivan replied
My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and help each other win." The reporter insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."
The reporter insisted and asked again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied: "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?"
What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn? Most of us take advantage of people's weaknesses instead of helping to strengthen them.
I hope you learn from this story. Most times winning the medal is not the ultimate price.
Nigeria's Chioma Ajunwa leaps to gold at the long jump events of the Olympic Games, Atlanta, 1996.
Ajunwa became the first West African and Nigerian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal and, to date, remains Nigeria's only individual Olympic gold medalist.
Ajunwa is also the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event.
