*The History and Origin of the Newly-Innovated Practice of Celebrating the Prophet’s Birthday.*

By Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbād al-Badr [may Allāh preserve him].

“The Mawlids were introduced in the fourth century after the hijrah. The first to introduce them were the ‘Ubaydiyyūn [who were Shi’ites] who ruled Egypt during the fourth century after the migration _(hijrah)_ of the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم. Al-Maqrizi said in ‘Al-Khutat wal-Athār fi Tāreekh Misr:’

‘They introduced six mawlids: the birthday of the Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, the birthday of ‘Ali, the birthday of Fātimah, the birthday of al-Hassan and [the birthday of] Hussain [may Allāh be pleased with them] and sixthly the birth-day of the existing ruler from among their rulers.

Therefore, if these celebrations and the singling out of these occasions, with specific actions did not occur in the first three centuries which are the best of centuries, about which the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: ‘The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them.’ [Saheeh al-Bukhāri, 6429 and Muslim, 2533]
The Companions _(Sahābah)_ did not celebrate the birthday of the Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم, nor did the _(Tābi‘een)_ Followers and Successors of the Companions of the Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, nor did _(Atbā‘ at-Tābi‘een)_ the leading Successors.
It was not in existence for a whole three hundred years. It was introduced during the fourth century, those who introduced it were the ‘Ubaydiyyūn who ruled Egypt.

*Therefore, what is the origin for this celebration?*

It is imitation of the Christians, as the Christians celebrate the birthday of ‘Ēsa [عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَم], therefore we have to celebrate the birthday of Muhammad صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. Meaning, those who introduced it were the ‘Ubaydiyyūn and the basis for it is emulation of the Christians!

It is well known that all goodness lies in what the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and his Companions [may Allāh be pleased with them] were upon. The Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ did not guide towards that and he did not do it himself, nor did the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, and neither did it originate from the Companions, nor their Followers and Successors, nor the Leading Successors. It was founded in the fourth century, thus the reason why there is nothing recorded in the books which were authored in the first three centuries, permitting celebrating the birthday _(Mawlid)_ with proofs and evidences. There is nothing indicating that the people used to celebrate, enjoin others to celebrate and/or practice celebrating it themselves. For a whole three hundred years it was non existent! It is well known that all goodness lies in following those who have preceded [i.e., the Pious Predecessors and Successors].

It is mandatory to love the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, and this love must be far greater, within hearts than the love of every beloved person, *but this love must be in accordance with the traditions and practices of the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.* There is nothing from the traditions and practices of the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ nor in the actions of the Pious Predecessors and Successors, who are the Companions and those who follow their path in that regard.

All goodness lies in the person following the guidance and example of the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and he has to be cautious not to fall into newly invented and innovated affairs.
