Why You Should Upgrade Your Old Electrical Wiring

Old electrical wiring increases your house’s risk of electrical shock, fire, and damage. A wiring upgrade can help you get rid of or minimize these risks. Here are some of the specific reasons old wiring is dangerous.

Degraded Insulation

Electrical insulation protects you from the electrical current that flows along your electrical wiring; insulation does this because it doesn’t conduct electricity. Insulation materials include things like PVC (a type of plastic), ceramic, and rubber, among others, but PVC is one of the most common.

Over time, exposure to different weather elements such as temperature fluctuations and moisture weakens the insulation material. Rubber, for example, loses its elasticity under high temperatures; and inelastic rubber can easily crack. Degraded insulation can easily get damaged or crack and expose your house to electrical dangers, such as electrical fires and shock.

Inadequate Capacity

The electrical contractor who designed and installed the original wiring in your house took into account the electrical needs at the time. Over time, you have probably increased your need for electrical supply. For example, you likely have more electrical appliances than you did a decade or so.

The increased need for electricity means your electrical wiring may not provide you with the power you currently need. For example, your electrical breaker might lack space for additional breakers, and you might run out of electrical outlets. An electrical upgrade can upgrade your wiring to meet your current needs for electricity.

Corroded Wires and Contacts

Rust is a poor conductor of electricity. Unfortunately, corrosion is a common feature in aging electrical wiring because electrical wires are metallic, and metals are susceptible to rust. Over the years, corrosion can eat into your electrical wires or contacts and affect their performance.

When metal wires corrode, the electrical resistance of the affected wires increased. Extremely high resistance can overheat electrical conductors and cause electrical fire and damage. Secondly, corrosion can eat into wires and even lead to breakage (electrical discontinuity). Not only that, but the corrosion also reduces the current you can get at your electrical outlets.

Accumulated Damages

People don’t upgrade their electrical wiring every time they suffer an electrical malfunction or damage. For example, when an outlet blows up, you don’t replace the whole circuit — just the dead outlet. In some cases, the repair job doesn’t end up quite as efficient as the initial installation.

A little inefficiency here and there might not affect your electrical wiring too much. Over the years, however, such little problems may add up and cause a severe deficiency and inefficiency in your electrical wiring. Such problems can particularly be serious if you are used to DIY electrical repairs, which are prone to mistakes. An upgrade can get your wiring back on track.

Outdated Wiring and Installations

Lastly, you should also upgrade your aging electrical wiring due to the outdated installations, techniques, and materials your house probably has. Electrical technology improves every day, and some of the technologies electricians considered safe and efficient several decades are ago are outdated today.

For example, some old wiring lacks grounding, uses k**b and tube, and lacks GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters). Even the government updates its electrical code requirements regularly. An upgrade of your electrical wiring allows you to take advantage of the latest and best technologies in the electrical industry.

If your house is several decades old, contact Crown Global Engineering for inspection of your electrical wiring and advise you on whether you need an upgrade.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND OUR OBJECTIVE AS AN ENGINEERING COMPANY.

Electrical Installation generally, be it residential, offices, industrial or public buildings are done on

1) Principles, and

2) Electrical code.

Let's talk about the closest one to you, and which you can quickly understand, that is "Electrical code" .

Electrical code is just a collection of mandatory standards, codified by a governmental authority and thus become part of the law for the jurisdiction represented by that authority eg, UBC, NEC, NIS, IEC, IEEE, etc. The standards recommended by these bodies are reviewed every 3-3 years and improvements are made where necessary, as a matter of fact, some recommended standards a couple of years ago, when reviewed, might be changed/upgraded and new one may replace due to some cogent reasons and safety purposes while some upgrades might be as a result of technological advancement with better performance. However, at any point of electrical installation, these mandatory standards must be duly followed, and this is just the objective of "Crown Global Engineering" ; "To change the phase of uncodified Electrical Installation in Nigeria, matching it with the international standards, thereby eliminating all forms of Electrical hazards" in our electrical network system.

Measures to Minimize the Risks of Residential Electrical Fires

by Crown Global Engineering | Aug 24, 2020; |Electrical Tips

Electrical fires are some of the leading causes of residential fires in the United States. Take the following measures to minimize your risks of being part of the statistics.

Don’t Overload Circuits

Electrical circuits have maximum power ratings that they can safely handle. You overload an electrical circuit when you try to draw power beyond the circuit’s limit.

Ordinarily, protective measures in the circuit (such as the circuit breaker) would cut off power in case of circuit overload. However, such protective measures can fail and lead to overheated conductors. The overheating can cause electrical fires in some cases.

Replace Outdated Fixtures

Electrical fixtures and installations age with time, and they become dangerous when they age. For example, the insulation materials of electrical wires deteriorate and crack with time. Without the protective insulation, a short circuit can ensue and trigger a chain of events that ends in an electrical fire. Talk to an electrician to advise you on when to replace your outdated wiring.

Keep Wiring Up to Code

The National Electrical Code, NEC, has a set of standards for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. NEC regularly updates its standards as new information on electrical safety comes to light. These standards, among other things, can help you prevent electrical fires.

For example, NEC requires ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) for all outdoor outlets. This requirement ensures that a ground fault, such as moisture exposure might cause, doesn’t trigger a serious electrical fault that can cause an electrical fire.

Repair Malfunctions Promptly

Electrical problems usually start small and then blow up into serious issues if you neglect them. Don’t ignore electrical problems even if they seem minor.

For example, a bulb that flickers or dims intermittently may be nothing more than a bother to you. However, the flickers point to underlying problems that need prompt repair. If a bulb flickers because it is loose, for example, the bulb may overheat and trigger fire after some time.

Go Easy on DIY Wiring

Although DIY electrical wiring may save you some money, it might also lead to electrical defects. You can easily make a mistake if you are not a professional electrician. For example, you might use an extremely thin wire that cannot handle the current in a circuit or use an indoor cable for your garden wiring. Such mistakes may trigger electrical fires in some cases.

Only try DIY wiring with simple issues that you have handled in the past. Whenever you are in doubt, trust your instincts and let a professional electrician handle the issue.

Have Regular Inspections

Your electrical wiring is not safe just because you have not noticed an obvious problem or signs of danger. Some electrical faults lurk under the surface and only flare up when another problem occurs.

For example, rusty contacts in an electrical outlet may not be problematic with low-current usage but may cause problems with high-powered devices. You may charge your phone safely from such an outlet, only for it to overheat when you plug in a power tool or blow dryer. Regular inspections (every few years, your electrician will help you specify the intervals) can catch such malfunctions.

Install Protective Devices

Lastly, install protective devices to enhance your electrical safety. For example, a surge protector can protect your house from temporary spikes in electricity. GFCIs can detect leakage in the current and cut off electricity before major damage occurs. Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) can detect arc faults and cut off electricity before materials in the circuit overheat.

Hopefully, the above tips will help you minimize the risk of electrical fires in your home. Contact Crown Global Engineering for Measures to Minimize the Risks of Residential Electrical Fires
