UNDERSTANDING SPIRITUAL FATHERHOOD

1. A spiritual father is not your covering, Jesus is your covering. A spiritual father's role is basically to labor and travail over you "until Christ is formed in you.

"My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you." Gal4:19

He does that through prayer, teachings, preaching and counseling.

2. A spiritual father is not necessarily the voice of God in your life. He is one who helps to interprete the voice of the Holy Spirit in your life, especially in difficult times, and in the area of sound christian doctrines. He can rebuke, warn, correct and encourage in the Lord. Remember, Eli helped Samuel to Understand the voice of God. (1Sam3:9)

3. A spiritual father is not your ultimate guide in life, the Holy Spirit is. A spiritual father only teaches you more accurately the things of God and encourages to seek the face of God personally. Remember How Aquila & Priscilla helped Apollos. (Acts18:26)

4. The ultimate goal of a spiritual father is not to make you look like himself, but to make you be like Jesus.
" It is enough for a disciple that he be like His teacher, and a servant like master." Matt10:24.

Jesus is that teacher and master.

5. A spiritual father is saddled with the responsibility of watching over your soul - your spiritual life.

"Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you." Heb13:17

He may be hard on you sometimes so he can save your soul.

6. A spiritual father is not to be worshipped, but to be highly esteemed for the sake of their labor in Christ Jesus:

And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 1Thess5:12-13

Treat them as God's representatives.

7. A spiritual father is a "parent in the Lord" (Eph6:1) and not the Lord himself. He points you to Jesus and not to himself

"For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord" (2Cor4:5).

So, you follow him as he follows Christ (1Cor11:1).

8. A spiritual father does not own you, Christ owns you. But a spiritual father makes sure you remain in the family of Christ and get nourishment there.

"Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly..." (1Pet5:2).

9. A spiritual father is a true Christian role model

"nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." (1Pet5:3).

You learn love, dedication, commitment and service to God through him.

10. A spiritual father is God's sample of divine elevation to you.

"Look to Abraham your father,
And to Sarah who bore you;
For I called him alone,
And blessed him and increased him.”
(Isaiah 51:2)

11. A spiritual father is your God-ordained and sent Man of God. He does not take the place of God in your life, but rather, helps you to know God better.
