Fruit and dessert is essential after meal and has many health benefits.....
According to a Lagos Business School source, prior to the ban on importation of fruit juice, there were over 30 brands of fruit juice in 1-litre packs and 40 brands of the 33-centilitre cans in the Nigerian market. "Federal Government estimate put the worth of fruit juice sold in 2002 at N40 billion.
However, these official figures did not take into account the informal sector that could easily have added another N20 billion to the Federal Government estimate," the source said.
On a per capital basis therefore, 120 million people, would be consuming N500 worth of fruit juice annually, which clearly suggests that a robust market exists for fruit juice in the country.
Most fruit juices, according to our source, were imported, with local production accounting for just 15 percent. There were two local brands Chivita and Fuman. Both had gained market acceptance by 2003 when the ban became effective.
By Christmas 2003, imported fruit juices had become scarce. Coca Cola Nigeria had also started producing locally, the Five Alive brand of fruit juice that was previously being imported.
In addition to the ban, the Federal Government increased the incentives to local manufacturers through tariff reduction on juice concentrates from 55 per cent to 15 per cent.
Juice concentrate is a major raw material in the production of fruit juice.
The ban has also increased the demand for fruit drinks and flavoured water as alternatives to fruit juice.
A good number of fruit drinks are now produced locally. The leading brands in this segment are La Cacera and Lulu.
Together, they account for about 50 per cent of the market share. A number of the big pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Pharma Deko and SmithKline Beacham have also taken advantage of the situation to repackage their fruit/energy drinks and strengthen their market presence. Some of them have even bottled flavoured water.
Apart from the pharmaceutical companies, other companies in the manufacturing and packaging of table water such as Cway, Cascade, Vicbol, etc., have extended their product line to include fruit drinks such as Vic apple drink, Cway Peach, Orange and Apple.
Fruit juice is gotten from the liquid in fresh fruits. If fresh, it is a great source of nutrients, and minerals. Freshly squeezed out fruit juice, bottled without additives is what appeals to most people.
This is a financially rewarding business in Nigeria. This is because both the young and the old love fruit juice. It tastes great and has many health benefits. This explains its high demand.
There are not enough fruit farms to service the fruit demand of Nigeria. Therefore, majority of manufacturers use imported concentrates. The exception being in cases of production and exportation of rare fruit juices such as ‘local cherry’ aka ‘udara’ or ‘agbalumo’.
