We take World Diabetes Day very seriously at Talabi Diabetes Center, and this year was no different. We had a very successful event this past week where we offered the community residents free screening and consultation services.

We also had an insightful educational seminar where we talk anything and everything diabetes. We even threw in some impromptu exercise session in between to emphasize the importance of regular exercises.

The turn out was beyond our expectations and no doubt the people left better equipped to handle living with diabetes either for themselves or for a loved one.

Today is World Diabetes Day. There are over 11 million people living with diabetes in Nigeria, and this figure is project to increase by 134% by 2045.

To make matter worse, there is very little support or resources available for these individuals to help them manage and even prevent them from getting the disease.

Even though there currently isn’t a cure for diabetes, living with the disease is definitely not a death sentence. With proper management and living a healthy lifestyle such as proper dieting and regular exercise, one can live a very vibrant and long life while dealing with diabetes.

Individually and collectively, we can all play our part to help generate more awareness, stop the stigmatization and support those living with diabetes. What have you done today to help the cause?

Last day of our summer camp. After two days of fun packed and interactive activities, it was time to round off our 2nd Annual Youth Diabetes Summer Camp. The participants have been exposed to lots of information on how to deal and live with the disease.

More importantly, they have been encouraged and embolden about living with the disease, rather than feeling stigmatised and ashamed.

The closing ceremony was also graced by Mrs Bola Obasanjo, the wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who himself was at the previous year’s closing ceremony.

Mrs Obasanjo shared the tips that has helped the former President manage his diabetes successfully. She then encouraged the participants to follow all the advice given to them during the camp and to fortify themselves for the challenges ahead so that they will achieve their goals despite living with Type 1 diabetes.

Before declaring the camp closed, Mrs Obasanjo gave a scholarship to one of the participants and also asked the Jigawa State Ministry of Health to establish contact with her as she will want to support young people with Type 1 Diabetes in the State.

We will like to extend a very big thank you to all the participants, their parents, our benevolent sponsors and everyone who contributed in one way or another in making our 2nd Annual Youth Diabetes Summer camp a success.

You Are What You Think: THINK POSITIVE!

Some indisputable truths about diabetes are:
1. There is no cure for it at the moment!
2. It is not age-, race- or gender-related!

The good news however is: IT CAN BE EFFECTIVELY MANAGED.

One of the key tools for managing diabetes is: POSITIVE THINKING.

Diabetes has its own problems; as a matter of fact, it is a problem by itself! But I AM HAPPY WITH MY DIABETES! Do I hear you say, “Really?”
Yes oooooo! This is because I’ve come to appreciate the fact that: “HAPPINESS IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF PROBLEMS, IT’S THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH THEM”. This is to say that for someone to be happy with the problems that confront them, they must come up with ways to deal with those problems. The first step in this process is to DECIDE TO BE POSITIVE about problems AND THEN MAKE CONCERTED EFFORTS TO EFFECTIVELY DEAL WITH THEM.
This, exactly is what I did 40 years ago when I was first diagnosed with the condition; and it has since been my way of life.
As I continuously learn about diabetes, I am experiencing improvements in my management skills of the condition and I have since taken LIVING WITH DIABETES as my LIFE-STYLE. This has helped me tremendously in my ability to live a fulfilled life. Now, at the age of 80 years, I am confidently saying: I AM LIVING WITH DIABETES, I HAVE CONQUERED DIABETES AND through the MERCY of GOD, I HAVE ACHIEVED MY LIFE DREAMS!
If I can embrace diabetes with open arms, I am sure you too can! JUST THINK POSITIVE and faithfully cooperate with your healthcare team in their efforts to walk you through the condition.
In particular:
• Take your prescribed medications regularly;
• Embrace all suggested life-style changes, especially in the areas of diet and exercise;
• Attend your follow-up medical appointments punctually.
• Never hesitate to discuss areas of concerns with your healthcare team!
