A postpartum urinary tract infection is an infection of any part of the urinary tract - urethra, bladder, ureter, or kidneys after delivery. It is slightly more common after a CS, due to the use of a urinary catheter during the procedure.

These tips will help you prevent postpartum UTIs.

Postpartum cramps are painful cramps felt in the uterus after delivery due to the uterus contracting to ensure nothing else is left in the uterus and to return to its pre-pregnancy size. It can feel like labour pains initially or strong menstrual cramps, which start immediately after birth and, in most cases, become less persistent and painful after the first week.

These cramps are usually more intense during breastfeeding and appear to stop earlier when you breastfeed more.

Routinely, you’ll have a hospital appointment six weeks after your baby is born; this serves as a wellness check for you and your baby. If you had a Cesarean section, you are likely to have an initial earlier appointment, usually after two weeks.

A ni**le shield is a thin ni**le-shaped cover worn over the ni**le and ar**la to ease breastfeeding and help with latching and suckling. It’s usually silicon and has openings on the ni**le to allow the breast milk to pass through.

Use ni**le shields under guidance from a lactation consultant to be sure you actually need one, and you’re using it correctly.

One of the most common sources of discomfort for children is toothache caused by cavities, teething, or injury.

To support your child, do the following:
1. Stay calm and reassuring
2. Identify the source of the pain
3. Administer a home remedy. Do a salt water rinse, and apply a cold compress around the swelling area. You can also give an over-the-counter pain relief medication to children above two years.

Encourage your child to avoid hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods during this period. Help them brush gently and schedule a dental appointment if the situation worsens.

If you or someone you know is considering undergoing IVF, this post will be beneficial.

The first step in IVF is an initial consultation with a fertility specialist who will run tests. After that, the woman’s ovaries will be stimulated to produce multiple eggs. Then an egg retrieval procedure will be scheduled once follicles mature, and the eggs will be transferred to the lab for fertilization. The strongest and healthiest eggs are selected for transfer back into the uterus after they have been observed in the lab. Following that, a waiting period begins for implantation and pregnancy to occur.

Adults can support children’s learning through scaffolding by modelling the skill, giving clues and asking questions while the child tries a new skill.

Playtime carries enormous opportunities for children to learn, and by asking some of these questions, you can help them maximize their play, whether it is indoor or outdoor:

- What do you need to learn more?
- What else is possible here?
- What is on your mind?
- What does that remind you of?
- When you do this, what are you noticing?
- What do you know about this now?
- Who would you like to share your findings with?

All babies are different, so there’s no one answer to when teething starts, but they follow a pattern irrespective of when they begin teething.

The teething process may start around a baby’s 6 to 10 months, or earlier or later. Some signs of teething are irritability or fussiness that comes and goes, drooling, mild rash around the mouth due to drooling, chewing on objects, especially the hands, and rubbing the ear or cheeks.

Teething babies will not have a fever, cough, diarrhea, vomiting, rashes on the body or excess fussiness that lasts for long.

Heterotopic pregnancy is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition. It happens when a woman carries both an intrauterine pregnancy (a pregnancy in the uterus) and an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube) at the same time.

It can be diagnosed through ultrasound, blood tests, pelvic exam or laparoscopy. It may be caused by unregulated fertility treatments, previous ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal surgery or congenital anomalies.

Lubricants help resolve vaginal dryness, especially in menopause.

Check for lubricants labelled:
1. Water-based lubricants.
Pro: Non-staining and easy to wash off.
Con: May need more re-applications than other l***s).

2. Silicone-based lubricants
Pro: Offer the highest amount of lubrication and are suitable for people with sensitive skin.
Con: They may be more challenging to wash off due to their long-lasting nature.

3. Oil-based lubricants
Pro: Offer a slippery feel and are long-lasting.
Con: They can irritate the skin, stain fabrics, and damage latex condoms.

If you are susceptible to yeast infections, oil-based or glycerin-containing water lubricants may not suit you.

A vacuum extraction is a vacuum-assisted delivery that occurs when the mother can no longer push effectively or when the baby has not moved further down the birth canal for a few hours.

Before a vacuum extraction becomes an option, the physician would have tried other ways to help labour progress.

Doctors will not go along with a vacuum extraction if a baby is in breech presentation, the pregnancy is less than 34 weeks, the baby has a health condition that affects the strength of their bones, the baby’s head is not yet at the center of the birth canal, or the size of the baby is bigger than the pelvis.

As with any delivery method, there are potential risks. Read all about vacuum extraction here: https://bit.ly/3Nwd7Ii.
