*EFCC ARRESTS 13 CHINESE NATIONALS OVER ILLEGAL MINING ACTIVITIES*

Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 13 Chinese Nationals over offences bordering on illegal mining activities, in Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to a statement signed by the head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwuajaren on Thursday, the suspects comprised of a female and 12 males.

“Prior to their arrest, discrete investigations on the activities of illegal mining operators in Kwara State revealed that the operators have different illegal mining sites in almost all the 16 Local Government Areas of the State.

“Upon interrogation, the arrested suspects confessed to being workers of a Chinese Company known as W. Mining Global Service Limited situated at Olayinka in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

“It was gathered that the company was using the illegally mined crude to produce marble and sell locally within Nigeria. Findings also revealed that some of the suspects working in the said company were without ‘work permit’, but only came with ‘visit permit’ from China to Abuja and travelled by road to Ilorin,” EFCC said.

The suspects would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.

*BREAKING: JUDGE ORDERS DSS TO ARRAIGN EMEFIELE IN ONE WEEK*

Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has issued a one week ultimatum to the Department of State Services, DSS, to either charge the detained suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele to court or set him free.

The Judge issued the order on Thursday while delivering ruling in a fundamental human rights suit instituted against the DSS and others by Emefiele.

Justice Muazu held that the DSS has power to carry out its constitutional duties of making arrest, detention and ensuring prevention of internal crime, but however said that such duties must be carried out within the ambit of the law.

He said that the arrest power of the DSS was not beyond the stipulated conditions under which a Nigerian citizen must be held and for how long.

Emefiele had dragged the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Director General DSS and DSS to court, seeking enforcement of his fundamental human rights to freedom of movement and dignity to human life.

In the suit instituted on his behalf by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Joseph Daudu, the suspended CBN Governor had applied that his arrest and detention since June 10 without valid order of court be voided and set aside.

Emefiele demanded a compensation of N5M as exemplary damages for his alleged unlawful detention.

*President Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly, seeking an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act.*

Tinubu, in a letter to the House of Representatives, said the amendment was to allow the Federal Government to source N500 billion for palliatives to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit known as petrol.

During plenary on Wednesday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, read Tinubu’s letter, titled, ‘Request for the amendment of the 2022 appropriation act’.

According to the President, the money would be sourced from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of N819.5 billion.

This is coming about six weeks after Tinubu announced that the payment of subsidy on petroleum was over.

*BENUE GOVT RAIDS EX-GOVERNOR ORTOM'S AUTOMOBILE SHOP, RECOVERS VEHICLES*

The Asset Recovery Committee set up by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, on Tuesday, raided an automobile shop owned by former Governor, Samuel Ortom, in Makurdi, the state capital.

Some vehicles were seized during the operation as the committee reportedly used towing vans to pull out some vehicles after attempts to drive them away failed.

In its reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue accused Alia of witch hunting his predecessor.

The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, described the committee’s outing as “a shameful showing of naked tyranny and impunity.”

*WHY I SANG ‘ABORU ABOYE’ – TOPE ALABI*

Gospel singer Tope Alabi has finally opened up on why she used ‘Aboru Aboye’, a form of greeting among Ifa initiates, in her song.

Defending herself while ministering recently in a white garment church, the 52-year-old stated that ‘Aboru Aboye’ is from the Yoruba language, not an exclusive preserve of traditionalists.

Tope, who explained with Bible reference, also clarified that her use of the term remains her peculiar style as a gospel artiste.

She said, “It was recorded that David made a sacrifice of faithfulness to God. Why was the word sacrifice not written as the same English word in the Yoruba version of the Bible? It is a Yoruba language. There is no special language for traditionalists. We are all speaking the Yoruba language.

“If some people say they want to use the language in their own style, it is not bad. We have also decided to use it in our own style.”

While reiterating that sacrifices were rendered in the Bible, she further queried, “Was Abraham’s sacrifice accepted or not? Was it not the same with Isaac?”

To establish her point, Tope also referenced a Bible passage, Romans 12:1, and said, “’I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.’ The word ‘acceptable’ is the ‘Aboru’ while ‘living sacrifice’ is Aboye.”

Tope came under criticism after she referred to herself as ‘ebo’ literally meaning ‘sacrifice’ in one of her songs.

She also said, “Abiye ni mi, Oruko mi ni yen. Mo de bo, mo ru, mo ye. (I am a sacrifice, that’s my name. I am a sacrifice accepted by God, that’s my name).”

*US COURT SENTENCES HUSHPUPPI'S ASSOCIATE, MR WOODBERRY TO 8-YEAR JAIL TERM*

Jacob Olalekan Ponle popularly known as Mr Woodberry has been sentenced to eight years and three months in prison for coordinating a multimillion-dollar fraud.

Mr Woodberry who is a known associate of imprisoned Nigerian fraudster, Hushpuppi, was sentenced on July 11 by Judge Robert Gettleman of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, after being convicted on one count of fraud.

It was also learnt that seven other counts were dismissed following a plea bargain in April. The convict is now expected to surrender to U.S. Marshal Service for onward transfer to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, where his family members, especially his American fiancée, would be allowed to visit him.

Mr Woodberry who will be deported after serving out his prison sentence, will pay seven victims about $8 million in restitution. The court discovered that he has the capacity to make the full payment but waived all interests on the restitution value.

Prosecutors who discovered that he had 152 bitcoins, had sought for the court's permission to sell it off. A 30-day notice was issued to the public for anyone with interest in the assets to file claims, but no one with legitimate interest turned up at the time of Mr Woodberry’s sentencing.

He is expected to forfeit items in the Dubai police custody, such as one Rolls Royce, Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG G55, four Rolex watches, one Patek Philippe watch, and three Audemars Piguet watches.

Mr Woodberry will also forfeit three gold and diamond-studded rings, five gold bracelets and two gold bracelet keys, six gold neck chains, one gold and diamond-studded necklace, one small gold nugget, two bank cards, about $1,835 in Emirati dirhams, and approximately $15.45 in South African rands.
