Today 20 , we celebrate World Ozone Day here at the Capital city Oshogbo under the theme "Montreal Protocol: Fixing the Ozone Layer and Reducing Climate Change." This year's theme highlights the inseparable link between ozone conservation, environmental well-being, and the fight against climate change.
The ozone layer is a fragile shield of gas that protects us from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun. Without the ozone layer, life on Earth would not be possible.
In the 1980s, scientists discovered that human activities were depleting the ozone layer. This was due to the release of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) into the atmosphere. ODS are chemicals that are used in a variety of products, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and fire extinguishers.
In 1987, the world's governments came together to sign the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The Montreal Protocol is a landmark international agreement that has led to the phasing out of ODS.
As a result of the Montreal Protocol, the ozone layer is now recovering. However, it is important to continue to protect the ozone layer and to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, which are also contributing to climate change.
On this World Ozone Day, I call on all world leaders to reaffirm their commitment to protecting the ozone layer and to addressing climate change. We must work together to ensure a healthy and sustainable future for all.
Here are some specific actions that world leaders can take to protect the ozone layer and reduce climate change:
Continue to phase out ODS and other harmful chemicals.
Invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Invest in Adequate Supply of the Ozone Layer friendly refrigerant
Protect and restore forests and other natural ecosystems.
Support sustainable agriculture and transportation practices.
Educate the public about the importance of ozone layer protection and climate action.

Effect of refrigerant on OZONE layer

Certain types of refrigerants, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), can have a negative impact on the ozone layer. When these refrigerants are released into the atmosphere, they break down in sunlight to release chlorine and bromine atoms. These atoms can then react with ozone molecules, destroying them.
Ozone is a gas that forms a layer in the stratosphere, about 10-50 kilometers above Earth. This layer protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Ozone depletion can lead to an increase in ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth's surface, which can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and immune system suppression in humans and animals. It can also damage plants and crops.
The effect of refrigerants on the ozone layer is measured by a property called ozone depletion potential (ODP). ODP is a relative measure of the potential of a substance to destroy ozone molecules. A substance with an ODP of 1.0 is equally as destructive to ozone as CFC-11, a reference refrigerant. Substances with ODPs of less than 1.0 are less destructive to ozone, and substances with ODPs of zero are not considered to deplete ozone at all.
CFCs have very high ODPs, typically ranging from 0.8 to 1.0. HCFCs have lower ODPs than CFCs, but they still contribute to ozone depletion. For example, HCFC-22, which is commonly used in older air conditioners and refrigerators, has an ODP of 0.055.
In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed by 196 countries. This treaty has been very successful in reducing the production and use of ozone-depleting substances. As a result, the ozone layer is slowly recovering. However, it is important to continue to use ozone-friendly refrigerants and to properly dispose of old equipment that contains ozone-depleting substances.
Here are some tips for choosing and using ozone-friendly refrigerants:
When buying new equipment, such as a refrigerator or air conditioner, make sure it uses a refrigerant with an ODP of zero.
If you have older equipment that uses an ozone-depleting refrigerant, have it serviced by a qualified professional. They can check for leaks and replace the refrigerant with an ozone-friendly alternative.
When disposing of old equipment that contains an ozone-depleting refrigerant, do so properly. Many communities have programs for collecting and disposing of ozone-depleting substances.
