Hello, wish to intimate you that the beginning of Black Africa's sculptural art can- on present evidence- be traced back to 500 B.C. At that distant time- just after the fall of Assyrian and a thousand years before the rise of Islam- great art was already being created in Africa. When Europe was emerging from the Dark Ages, the masterpieces of Ife artistssaw the light of the day. Thus what Europeans found when they penetrated the Dark Continent was not the primitive art of nations in the dawn of their civilization, but great sculpture, evidence of two millenia of African creative genius. Conquest and exploitation, religious conversions and dispossessions took their toll and the tribal culture which produced is today in a state of decline. Hopefully, the new African Americans, when their struggle for nationhood, and Independence is won, will have an artistic renaissance which will measure up to former splendours.

Hello lovers of artforms, once again, here goes. The roots of art lies in the practical side of religion, which created a need for images representing gods, spirit or other beings to serve as a focus for ritual or worship. Part of the function of such images was to arouse the appropriate response from the followers, and it fell to the artist to attempt to evoke them by means of his art. In this task he was assisted by the very intense emotions centred around a common belief. Despite this apparent advantage, the creation forceful images posed many problems, taxing the artist's skills and imagination to the fullest. It's probable that all the later devs in art arouse out of the long practice of solving such problems.

Art is a fundamental human activity. Only in most unusual circumstances do we find a people without art. Man created paintings and sculpture long before he made practical discovery like agriculture and metal-working. For the hunting communities of the Ice Age, from whom we inherited the earliest examples of art, life was a constant struggle for survival, allowing little time or energy for luxuries. It's therefore very unlikely that their paintings and carvings were intended as mere decorations or as a gratification of an intellectual craving for higher things: these were hardly the times for an"Art for Art's sake". Yet how strongly the need for art was felt is felt is shown by its very existence at such an early stage of human development. Available indices show that the art of most societies had its origin in religion. This can be observed equally in the sophisticated life of Ancient Egypt as in the very primitive ones one of Kalahari Bushman and Australian Aborigine to today. Many religions, particularly the early and the primitive, are concerned with the vital issues of birth, and the production of food. Also by providing man with a coherent description of the universe, these religions serve to counteract his feeling of helplessness in the face of the bewildering and uncontrollable aspects of his environment. This through its links with religion, art came to reflect the basic factors of life.

Africa: The Art Of A Continent. Nok Culture. One of the earliest African centres of ironworking and terra cotta production, the nok culture whose remains are of a remarkable artistic value remains an enigma. Nigeria possesses richer evidence of its artistic past than any other part of the continent south sahara. One of West Africa's most advanced civilizations,Nok Culture flourished in modern Nigeria during the Iron Age from 5th BCE to the 2nd century CE. Famous for the distinctive terra cotta sculpture of human heads and figures, Nok was first known culture in West Africa to produce such art and perfect iron smelting technology. Wherever the idea came from, it permitted Nok to jump from Stone Age stage and skip Bronze Age stage that s typical of development elsewhere.
