In an age of enlightenment, technology and modern living, it’s amazing that it has been estimated that nearly 800 million adults worldwide lack even the most basic literacy skills.

International Literacy Day aims to highlight the importance and value of literary education for individuals and groups, as well as providing benefits for the wider global culture.

In this modern world, the ability for people to read and write has been directly connected to reduced poverty, improved socio-economic status, reduced population growth, minimized child and maternal mortality rates, and balancing out gender and equality on a sustainable level.

Because of this, many countries and governments all over the world believe that the increase of literacy rates in children will have a direct impact on the future welfare of them and their families.

Even something as simple as being able to read a street sign, fill out vital health forms, read the news or learn information from the internet is impossible without the ability to read. And this limits people’s ability to succeed and overcome obstacles in life.

Let us join hands to build our nation at every stage we find ourselves.

Adults face barriers to learning...

Unsurprisingly, adults face unique barriers to learning, compared with children. As we get older, things can get…well, more difficult. Studies from the fields of cognitive psychology and educational neuroscience show that attaining the foundational skills of literacy can be challenging, not only due to the complexity of the task—which involves multiple areas of the brain—but also lower levels of “brain plasticity”. This becomes even more difficult if the language is “opaque” (a limited correspondence between letters and their sounds), or when learning new scripts—recent research posits that adults become dyslexic for new alphabets at about the age of 19 (Abadzi 2019). This, combined with socio-economic factors—the high opportunity costs of adults’ time, difficult learning environments, and uncertain returns with education—can make adult literacy challenging.

READING ENHANCES EMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS

When you don’t read regularly, you miss out on the numerous benefits that reading provides, such as increased knowledge and vocabulary, improved memory and focus, and enhanced empathy and understanding of others.

Let's focus on enhanced empathy and understanding people.... This is important!

Empathy is an important character trait people can develop. It helps us relate to other people and encourages us to be kind and considerate of other people’s feelings.

As it turns out, reading can actually help improve empathy.

When people read stories about other people’s lives, it helps them develop the skills to understand the world through another person’s perspective. This is a key element in being empathetic toward others.

One way reading does this is through improving something called the “theory of the mind.” Theory of mind is the ability to attribute mental states like beliefs, intents, desires or emotions to others and to understand that other people have different beliefs, intents and desires than our own. When you read literary fiction, you’re deepening your understanding of other people’s thoughts, emotions and desires.

This understanding can be used in real life to try to understand and relate to other people, no matter what their background is.

Life can be stressful, especially with busy or challenging work and school schedules. It’s hard to escape the feeling of stress and anxiety from a hectic lifestyle. Fortunately, reading can actually help lower stress levels. Not only that, but it can also help you sleep better at night.

Now, if we have a whole lot of benefit reading, some people are unable to read, that is they can't put letters together to form a word.
Let's not even talk about comprehension.

They might lack empathy and understanding of others, they argue for nothing and think they are right.

Let's make the world a better place by contributing our quota.

WE DO LEARNING YOUR WAY!

POOR SPELLING ABILITIES

People who have poor spelling abilities or spelling difficulties sometimes avoid using words that are out of their spelling abilities for fear of making spelling mistakes. They can also be reluctant to share their work or participate in activities like writing on a whiteboard in front of a group or typing comments in a virtual learning environment.

Many children and even adults have problems with spelling. Spell check can often only get you so far. Sometimes spell check cannot even tell what word it is you are trying to spell. You may have even written a word that is a word but not the word you intended to write.

Poor spelling abilities can lead to a lack of confidence and poor performance at school. Spelling and reading are interconnected, so one step in improving reading skills is to improve your spelling skills. This is the reason why we include spelling instruction in our reading and spelling program. We teach spelling through spelling patterns.

Spelling skills impact not only school success but also life success. In fact, by the time you are entering the workforce, a spelling error on your resume could be the difference between landing an interview or not.

When a student just has difficulty with spelling, in other words, they can read well but not spell, I typically say they have a spelling disability.

That just means they have difficulty with spelling.

Sometimes this is due to the type of spelling instruction they have had. Sometimes it is because their teacher allowed creative spelling. Sometimes it is because children are struggling readers and don’t have spelling competence. And, even students that are gifted can and often do have problems with spelling.

Many people think the English language is chaotic. They talk about irregular words, words with word endings, as well as word origin. Yes, that is important. However, spelling a word correctly is based on the structure of the language, the 8 spelling patterns. Spelling longer words, even those with word endings, is just combining several patterns. Each syllable or word part has a pattern. So, ultimately, there are only 8 patterns to learn.

Yes, some letter groupings can make different sounds. For example, the th has two different sounds. I like to think of the two sounds as coming from twins. The noisy twin and the quiet twin.

This thin

That throw

Them thirst

Well, there are secrets to all these.

Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there lived a little country girl, the prettiest creature who was ever seen. Her mother had a little red riding hood made for her. Everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood.

One day her mother said to her: “Go my dear, and see how your grandmother is doing, for I hear she has been very ill.”

Little Red Riding Hood set out immediately.

As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf. He asked her where she was going.

“I am going to see my grandmother.”

“Does she live far off?” said the wolf.

“It is beyond that mill you see there”.

It was not long before the wolf arrived at the old woman’s house. He knocked at the door.

Tap, tap, tap.

“Who’s there?”

“Your grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood,” replied the wolf, faking her voice.

The good grandmother called out, “Pull the string, and the latch will go up.”

The wolf pulled the string and the door opened, and then he immediately fell upon the good woman and ate her up in a moment.

He then shut the door and got into the grandmother’s bed, expecting Little Red Riding Hood, who came some time afterwards and knocked at the door.

Tap, tap, tap.

“Who’s there?”

“It is your grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood.”

The wolf cried out, “Pull the string, and the latch will go up.”

Little Red Riding Hood pulled the string, and the door opened.

“Grandmother, what big arms you have!”

“All the better to hug you with, my dear.”

“Grandmother, what big ears you have!”

“All the better to hear you with, my child.”

“Grandmother, what big eyes you have!”

“All the better to see you with, my child.”

“Grandmother, what big teeth you have got!”

“All the better to eat you up with.”

Fortunately, a hunter was passing near by the hut. He heard the wolf, and recognised him right away. He ran over to the window. He took a good aim, and that was the end of the wolf.

The Three Little Pigs

There was once a family of pigs. The mother pig was very poor, and so she sent her three little pigs out to seek their fortunes. The first that went off met a man with a bundle of straw, and said to him:

“Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house.”

Which the man did, and the little pig built a house with it. Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said:

“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

To which the pig answered:

“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”

The wolf then answered to that:

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in.”

So he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew his house in, and ate up the little pig.

The second little pig met a man with a bundle of furze, and said:

“Please, man, give me that furze to build a house.”

Which the man did, and the pig built his house. Then along came the wolf, and said:

“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”

“Then I’ll puff, and I’ll huff, and I’ll blow your house in.”

So he huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, and he huffed, and at last he blew the house down, and he ate up the little pig.

The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks, and said:

“Please, man, give me those bricks to build a house with.”

So the man gave him the bricks, and he built his house with them. So the wolf came, as he did to the other little pigs, and said:

“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in.”

Well, he huffed, and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, and he puffed and huffed; but he could not get the house down. When he found that he could not, with all his huffing and puffing, blow the house down, he said:

“Little pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips.”

“Where?” said the little pig.

“Oh, in Mr Smith’s Home-field, and if you will be ready tomorrow morning I will call for you, and we will go together, and get some for dinner.”

“Very well,” said the little pig, “I will be ready. What time do you mean to go?”

“Oh, at six o’clock.”

Well, the little pig got up at five, and got the turnips before the wolf came (which he did about six) and who said:

“Little Pig, are you ready?”

The little pig said: “Ready! I have been and come back again, and got a nice potful for dinner.”

The wolf felt very angry at this, but thought that he would be up to the little pig somehow or other, so he said:

“Little pig, I know where there is a nice apple-tree.”

“Where?” said the pig.

“Down at Merry-garden,” replied the wolf, “and if you will not deceive me I will come for you, at five o’clock tomorrow and get some apples.”

Well, the little pig bustled up the next morning at four o’clock, and went off for the apples, hoping to get back before the wolf came; but he had further to go, and had to climb the tree, so that just as he was coming down from it, he saw the wolf coming, which, as you may suppose, frightened him very much. When the wolf came up he said:

“Little pig, what! Are you here before me? Are they nice apples?”

“Yes, very,” said the little pig. “I will throw you down one.”

And he threw it so far, that, while the wolf was gone to pick it up, the little pig jumped down and ran home. The next day the wolf came again, and said to the little pig:

“Little pig, there is a fair at Shanklin this afternoon, will you go?”

“Oh yes,” said the pig, “I will go; what time shall you be ready?”

“At three,” said the wolf. So the little pig went off before the time as usual, and got to the fair, and bought a butter-churn, which he was going home with, when he saw the wolf coming. Then he could not tell what to do. So he got into the churn to hide, and by so doing turned it round, and it rolled down the hill with the pig in it, which frightened the wolf so much, that he ran home without going to the fair. He went to the little pig’s house, and told him how frightened he had been by a great round thing which came down the hill past him. Then the little pig said:

“Hah, I frightened you, then. I had been to the fair and bought a butter-churn, and when I saw you, I got into it, and rolled down the hill.”

Then the wolf was very angry indeed, and declared he would eat up the little pig, and that he would get down the chimney after him. When the little pig saw what he was about, he hung on the pot full of water, and made up a blazing fire, and, just as the wolf was coming down, took off the cover, and in fell the wolf; so the little pig put on the cover again in an instant, boiled him up, and ate him fhappilypper, and lived happy ever afterwards.

Once upon a time when pigs spoke rhyme
And monkeys chewed to***co,
And hens took s***f to make them tough,
And ducks went quack, quack, quack, O!

Both “ai” and “ay” say the long A sound.

We use “ai” in the middle of the word (think rain, pail, train, mail) and “ay” at the end of the word (play, stay, day, May).

If the long a sound is at the end of the word or syllable, use AY. If the long a sound is at the beginning or middle of the word or syllable, consider ai and a-e.

While English can sometimes be unpredictable for first-time learners – phase is pronounced with an f? – there are some patterns you’ll begin to notice that can help you identify certain vowel sounds like the long A.

Most commonly, these patterns will come in the form of a-e words, ai words, ay words, and ei words.

A-E Words

You might approach A in the middle of a word, like “made,” and wonder how you’re supposed to pronounce it. That E at the end should give you the hint you need. The word “made” is pronounced with a long A sound because the E at the end tying the sound together. If that E wasn’t there, you’d be stuck with the word “mad,” which is spoken with a short A sound and means something different. Other A-E words include:

bake
cake
make
lake
fake
stake
crate
grate
flake
skate
inflate
migrate
imitate
estimate
translate
AI Words

Words with the combination of letters ai are usually another good sign that a long A sound is involved, at least where those letters are placed. Some ai words include:

aim
mail
gain
fail
main
grail
chain
again
plain
strain
remain
contain
explain
maintain
ascertain

READING IS GOOD

Reading strengthens the mind, not simply by what you are learning, but by what you are doing. It creates patience with yourself and helps you concentrate or focus. Reading exercises your mind.

Reading opens your mind. It provides you with a fresh perspective and point of view. It helps your brain grasp opportunities and helps you see things you could not see before. If you don’t read, nothing happens. You remain the same as the world advances without you. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to exercise your mind and your discernment.

Reading allows you to see both sides of a conversation. It helps you have a stronger vocabulary. It helps you spell better. You will learn so many things and develop a healthy sense of well-being because you will find that you love to learn.

For me, what I have learned is that brilliance, creativity, and genius can be learned and grown by reading. Part of having brilliance and genius is to have a vast amount of perspectives. If you only have your perspective, you can become vain and irrelevant without knowing it. When you read, you discover how much you don’t know and how much more you want to know.

You that can read this, it's okay...some people can not, what do you think can become of them?

The Marriage of Eric and Enide
Rf
At dawn, on Easter Day, King Arthur stood on the battlements of his Castle at Cardigan in Wales. As he smelled the spring air, he recalled an ancient tradition known as 'The White Stag'.

According to custom, on Easter Monday the King and his knights would go hunting - and whoever killed a white stag would win the right to kiss the fairest maiden at the court. The custom had fallen out of use, but Arthur thought to himself that it was proper for a great King to uphold tradition.

After chapel, the Knights of the Round Table gathered in the main hall of the castle. King Arthur announced that he would revive the custom of the White Stag. All were pleased to hear this news except for one – and he was Sir Gawain. Gawain was the most courtly and wisest knight of the Round Table. None other, apart from the wizard Merlin himself was more trusted, or held in greater esteem by the King. He spoke quietly to Arthur so that none other could hear.

“Sire. No good will come from this hunt. He who kills the white stag must kiss the fairest maiden at the court, but there are 500 beautiful maidens here. Each one is the favourite of some bold knight. Every knight will contend that his maiden is fairest and most noble and will take grave insult if another is chosen. There will be quarrels and bloodshed.”

Although Arthur saw the wisdom of Sir Gawain’s words, he replied, “I have spoken my intention, and a King’s words cannot be unspoken.”

The following morning at daybreak, the knights rose from their beds. They dressed in light tunics, mounted their hunting horses, and set off for the forest carrying their bows and arrows. Queen Guinevere followed behind them on a white pony. A young maiden, the daughter of a Princess, rode by her side.

One of the knights looked back and saw the Queen and her maiden following at some distance. He turned round his horse and cantered back towards them. He was young and handsome, finely dressed in a fur-lined cloak, and a tunic of silk that had been woven in Constantinople. His spurs were made of gold, and his only weapon was a sword. His name was Sir Eric.

Eric spoke to the Queen saying that, if it pleased her, he would be glad to ride along with her. Queen Guinevere thanked the young knight for his company, adding that she could have none better. Then they rode straight on to the forest.

Those out in front were already chasing the stag. Some blew horns; others fired arrows, and the dogs barked. There was the risk of an accident, with so many arrows flying through the air, and Sir Eric advised the Queen and her maiden to hold back for a while in a clearing.

While they were waiting, they saw a knight coming through the woods. He was fully armoured with a shield over his shoulder and a lance in his hand. Riding behind him was a beautiful maiden while riding out in front of him was a dwarf with a whip in his hand.

Queen Guinevere was very curious about this new arrival, and she sent her maiden to ride over and fetch him to her. The maiden rode ahead towards the knight, and the dwarf came to meet her. She spoke to him in a haughty voice.

“Let me pass, little man. I wish to speak to that knight.” - but the dwarf blocked her way. When she tried to ride past him, he struck her on the arm with his whip. She cried out with pain and rode back quickly to the Queen. Guinevere was quite astonished that anyone would be so bad-mannered as to wound a young maiden with a whip.

him why was it that his daughter, who was so beautiful, wore nothing but a simple white dress.

The soldier replied, “Noble sir. Poverty treats an old soldier unkindly. I cannot afford to buy her clothes to match her beauty. Even dressed as she is, she does not lack offers of marriage. I have refused several lords and knights who wished for her hand, for I am waiting for a still better offer. Believe me, when I say, her beauty is not her only virtue. Her heart is noble and wise as well. I know no greater happiness than when she is by my side.”

As much as it pleased Eric to hear about the young girl, he recalled that he had come here on a serious business. He asked his host if he knew anything of the knight who rode with a dwarf and a beautiful young maiden, and the old soldier told him everything that he needed to know. Every year, the town offered the prize of a fine hunting hawk to the most beautiful maiden. Any knight who claimed that his damsel was the fairest must joust in a tournament. The victor had the right to give the hawk to his love.

For the past two years, the knight seen by Eric had crushed all who challenged him. His maiden had won the prize. He fought so fiercely, that this year, no knight would dare to come against him, and his maiden would once again be declared the most beautiful girl in town.

He said to the maiden out loud so others could hear; “Take this prize, for it is rightly yours. No damsel on this field exceeds you in beauty.”

Before she could take it, however, Eric rode up and called out; “Damsel! Hold back! Take some other bird, for you have no right to this one!”

The knight was furious at this interruption, and he turned to face Eric.

“How dare you come between my beautiful girl and her prize!” he said. To which Eric replied, “This bird belongs to my maiden, for none can compare to her in beauty, not even the sun nor the moon. Furthermore, her heart exceeds all others in wisdom and nobility.”

The other said, “It is madness that makes you say so. You will pay dearly for your foolish words.”

Eric was not troubled by his threats and was more than ready to joust with the knight. The two men rode their horses in opposite directions, and then turned and faced each other for the charge. Then they spurred their horses towards each other at great speed. Each aimed their lances at the other. Both struck- and both fell backwards off their mounts onto the ground.

The knights sprang to their feet and drew their swords. They traded heavy blows, splitting shields and breaking helmets. Eric tripped, and while he was still rising back up onto his feet, his opponent swung his sword down on him, meaning to split his helmet open - but fortune protected Eric, and although the sword broke a piece of his helmet off the side, it missed his skull and Eric survived the attack. A moment or two later, he glanced over to where the maidens were standing, and he saw that both were weeping with fear for their heroes.

mercy.

He rode through the gates of the castle and asked for an audience with the queen. Barely able to walk he came up to her throne and kneeled before her. He begged her pardon and her mercy. After consulting with Sir Gawain, she granted him her forgiveness on one condition – that he serve King Arthur as his knight. He readily agreed.

A day later Eric and Enide arrived at Cardigan. There was great rejoicing. The Queen embraced the young girl, and when she saw that she was dressed in a simple white dress, she gave her a beautiful dress of her own. It was of green and gold, and Enide looked even more resplendent and beautiful. Directly afterwards, Eric and Enide were married in the chapel. That evening there was a magnificent feast in celebration. At the height of the festivities, King Arthur called all to order and announced that he had reached his decision about the fairest maiden. He would bestow his kiss on Enide. She came before him, and the king kissed her gently and properly. He promised to love her as a friend.

All agreed that King Arthur had made the right choice, and not one knight came forth to challenge him.

And that’s the story of the Marriage of Eric and Enide - but their tale does not end with their wedding. I will be back soon with a second story about Eric and Enide, which will tell you what happened after they were married. Bertie asked me to tell you that and early version of this story was written as a poem in old French, by Chretien do Troyes. There are is also a Welsh version in the Welsh collection of tales the Mabinogion, but in that version they are known as Geraint and Enid.
