Today’s quote comes from William Blake’s poem “The Four Zoas,” used by Ralph Metzner in the first chapter of his book, The Well of Remembrance. A classic! In the poem, Blake explores themes of the human psyche, spirituality, and the relationship between Nature and humankind. The quote speaks to the idea that, in Blake’s view, we as people have forgotten that we are an integral part of Nature and by this virtue we ourselves are divine beings. Much too often, instead of recognizing the divinity within ourselves, we tend to externalize the concept of the divine, creating gods and goddesses outside of ourselves. Blake believed that by reconnecting with nature and recognizing the divine within us, we as humans can gain a deeper understanding of the universe and our place within it.
