𝗞𝗜𝗕𝗥𝗔 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗢 (‘doorbreek de stilte’ in het Papiaments) is een solo voorstelling over ‘de confidential files’ die wij in onze hersenen bewaren. Waarom onderdrukken we bepaalde ervaringen? Hoe dealt de nieuwe, jonge Caribische generatie met moeilijke en traumatische belevenissen? Vooral in een community waar je opgroeit met de “omdat ik het zeg” en “suck it up” attitude. CT Icons #8: Stef van Looveren (they/them) on making art and being art
Welcome to 𝗖𝗧 𝗜𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀! A new web series, with a new episode every Thursday. In the eighth and final episode of CT Icons, Dutch creative studio MAISON the FAUX talks to their friend Stef van Looveren. In December 2020, they created the performance 12 in Compagnietheater together. Stef Van Looveren is an Antwerp based multidisciplinary nonbinary artist (they/them). They studied Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins, London and Sint Lucas, Antwerp. Stef Van Looveren’s practice translates itself into video installation, photo, sculpture and performance. Van Looveren uses the installations as an attempt to reflect and dismantle the performativity of our human behaviour, primarily within the notion of gender. Playfully mimicking our social conducts along with visual culture, their work moves towards a surreal gesture. MAISON the FAUX is “a creative studio posing as a grand couture fashion house”. The Fictional House, a rough translation of MAISON the FAUX, is rooted in the great fascination of what’s REAL and FAKE, a great sense of humor and self-mockery, combined with a deep love of fashion. The studio specializes in performance art, fashion & costume design and set and interior design. The work of MAISON the FAUX is determined by it’s multidisciplinary approach; MAISON the FAUX aims to create work that finds the perfect synergy between many creative arts. Creating shows, plays, experiences, collections, spaces and much more, that invites audiences to be a part of the MAISON the FAUX universe. CT ICons #7: DJ Lynnée Denise on black bodies in white spaces, Jazz and building legacy
Welcome to 𝗖𝗧 𝗜𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀! A new web series, every Thursday! In the seventh episode of CT Icons, Dutch artist and playwright Ira Kip talks to her friend DJ Lynnée Denise: Lynnée Denise was shaped as a DJ by her parent’s record collection. She’s an artist, scholar, and writer whose work reflects on underground cultural movements, the 1980s, migration studies, theories of escape, and electronic music of the African Diaspora. Lynnée Denise coined the phrase ‘DJ Scholarship’ to re-position the role of the DJ from a party purveyor to an archivist, cultural custodian and information specialist of music with critical value. Through interactive workshops, lectures and presentations at universities, conferences and performance venues, Lynnée Denise harnesses music as a medium for vital public dialogue on how to transform the way that music of the Black Atlantic is understood in its social context and beyond entertainment. In 2015 she directed the well known play Vagina Monologues, with which she toured prisons in New York. The tour was filmed, for which the film makers received an NY Emmy nomination. In 2016 she started working on her new play Shrew Her, based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. This play premiered to raving reviews at Compagnietheater, after which it was played for several years. She is currently developing a new play called Skyscrapers. Welcome to 𝗖𝗧 𝗜𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀! A new web series, every Thursday! In this sixth episode of CT Icons, creative director JeanPaul Paula talks to his friend Miles Greenberg: Miles Greenberg is a Montreal-born performance artist and researcher of corporal movement based between New York and Paris. His practice centres around a romanticized exploration of the Black body in space through durational performance, sculptural forms and gestures. His work consists of large-scale sensorially-immersive environments which revolve around the physical body. He has a largely self-acquired background in linguistics, perfumery, butoh and physical theatre, and has studied under the direction of various mentors such as Edouard Lock, Robert Wilson and Marina Abramović. Welcome to 𝗖𝗧 𝗜𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀! A new web series, every Thursday! In the fifth episode of CT Icons, Dutch creative studio MAISON the FAUX talks to their friend Nina McNeely: Nina McNeely is an L.A based choreographer, director, visual artist and creative director. Her puppet-like movements reflect how the systems and logic of capitalism can be embodied. At the same time, her work shows that defying that logic—creating a gap between individuals and the forces that animate them—doesn’t have to look like escape or transcendence; it can look like doubling down and experimenting with the weird tensions, twitchy resistances, and downright magic within. She’s collaborated with artists such as Björk, Rihanna, Mø, Banks, Skrillex, Eve, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Dillon Francis to name a few. She is thrilled to have recently worked on her first feature with Gaspar Noé and the incredible cast of Climax. She is represented by Bloc Talent Agency and Maavven.
