Ukiyo handmade in the Netherlands

We are incredibly proud of our new Ukiyo Japanese outfit for children. The ensemble features our Haori jacket paired with balloon-shaped trousers. These trousers draw inspiration from the traditional Hakama Japanese pants. We will share more about them later. Both items evoke a sophisticated feeling with their stunning cream tones, made from 100% natural cotton.

Juni Mode Maand Arnhem X Ukiyo

This year, we have been invited to participate in the Arnhem June Fashion Month; urban exhibition 'Extraordinary'. In the 'Extraordinary' urban exhibition, FDFA gives voice to the people of Arnhem themselves.

The result is a series of portraits and stories of extraordinary individuals, ranging from authentic Arnhemmers to exceptional entrepreneurs and established designers who embrace deviation from the established norms without hesitation.

These Arnhemmers share why a life 'Outside the Lines' is more fascinating to them than following the beaten path, what drives them to chart their own course, and what it takes to do so.

The 'Extraordinary' urban exhibition will be exclusively showcased during FDFA'23 in shop windows throughout Arnhem Center. The exhibition can be visited throughout the June Fashion Month with a special City Route map.

The various scarves have been created with great passion. Made from existing fabric transformed into ukiyo items. We have fallen in love with the different colors and prints. To our eyes, a painting of art. Various designs are available, including the beautiful vintage Paisley and the green floral print. They are super soft and beautiful, contrasting wonderfully with, for example, an Ukiyo Haori raw denim jacket.

We’ve updated our popular Haori jacket. Together with our new balloon-shaped pants it forms a Japanese inspired suit. Combine these with our ecological and sustainable tee’s and our upcycled vintage shawls and your kids outfit is complete.

Once again, exquisite silk scarves embellished with charming designs are now available. Our vintage scarves have been revived and rejuvenated in our atelier, granting them a new lease of life. Each one is unique. These stunning fabrics were discovered in a fabric store in Arnhem. The fabrics where no longer used.

Denim suit | The raw denim collection is entirely crafted from the same fabric. This Japanese left hand twill is a 13 oz with the sensation of 14 oz. It's a beautiful sturdy denim that lasts long and fades in color gracefully, creating a stunning effect.

Kimono Suit | We’ve updated our popular Haori jackets for the best shape. Together with our new balloon-shaped pants it forms a Japanese inspired suit.

The soul of Ukiyo | Footprint ukiyo

Hi everyone, I would love to tell you about our carbon footprint.

Our footprint is the soul of Ukiyo. Every choice we make is based to contribute to a healthy, safe and sustainable climate and environment.

Living in the moment – the meaning and purpose of Ukiyo, preferably in a safe child friendly environment. Building toward a sustainable future, which we can be proud of and take care for. Aren’t we all dreaming of a lush and green climate, and enough healthy air to breathe for generations to come?!

The fashion industry contributes massively towards climate change in a negative manner and thus has a huge negative social and environmental impact. After the agricultural industry, the fashion industry is globally the largest polluter of freshwater.
Those are all the reasons why we strive for sustainable and climate-neutral Ukiyo-garments.

Both the way how clothing is produced ánd consumed have different but significant impacts. Fast-fashion dominates streetlife and sure: it’s fun to buy new styles and affordable clothing, but it’s far from ethical nor in any way sustainable. Our behaviour and (apparently our disability to deny) our desire for fast-fashion also has a catastrophic negative impact on climate-change.

This should change in behaviour that contributes to a more inclusive, regenerative and sustainable approach to fashion, which should lead to a circular process and fashion system.

Ukiyo strives for a circular system in the production of her garments.

How?
- Ukiyo lowers its Co2 emission by producing everything locally and works together with local suppliers, designers and deliverers within a radius of app. 5km. We’re making sure that all of them also have a sustainable-philosophy.
- We use recycled and leftover fabrics
- If ordered locally, we deliver by bike
- We use sustainable (100% recyclable) packaging and materials
- Of every Euro profit we make, we donate 10% to a good cause (toward a healthier climate)

For our new collection we used leftover denim fabrics. We produced our denim collection with leftover fabrics that we found somewhere hidden in the back of a denim studio. We gave it a new life with garment made of pure quality, 13oz Japanese denim, made on traditional machinery.

We have blended our affection towards denim and Japanese shapes in some great ukiyo garments. The pristine of denim and our affection for this sturdy, authentic fabric made our choice to work with denim for our next collection a very easy one.

Recycle and reuse packaging | Little local handmade boxes, useful for storing drawings, markers or toys.

Girl in white Kimono | Inspiration | Painter George Hendrik Breitner. Inspired by Japanese prints, between 1893 and 1896 Breitner made thirteen paintings of a girl in a kimono. She assumes different poses and the kimono often has a different colour. What catches the eye here is the embroidered, white silk kimono.

This red striped vest is inspired by the Japanese Sakiori jackets. It has original details made of linear patterns and straight shoulders. Limited stock - Handmade

It all started with a lot of creative ideas. Looking for beautiful used fabrics at different locations.

With a family who taught me everything there is to know about art, I learned at a young age how valuable and timeless a single object cán and so many times deserves to be.

Local design | Local production | Local packaging

Everything we make is made of beautiful, sustainable, and used fabrics. Our entire collection, and every single detail, is produced locally in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

We search for fabrics that have already been used or those that have been left behind. After that, we design the clothing to be as solid as can be. This ensures that an item will remain beautiful.

Studio Ryn is a Dutch production studio we team up with, located in Arnhem. They distinguish themselves by using sustainable and eco friendly fabrics and locally produced handmade garments.

Studio Ryn was established by designer Sjaak Hullekes from Arnhem. We share his vision of reshoring; bringing back the manufacturing to the Netherlands.

The process of growing | We believe that good quality begins with patience in the producing process.

Moving | we’ve moved to a new studio and are currently mending it into a very inspirational studio and meeting place. A unique studio where sustainability, upcycle and vintage projects come together.

Give leftover fabrics new life

Linen softness wearing by the beautiful Jonah | All Haori Linen are unique and up-cycled from vintage table cloths. The table cloths you may know from France. We love these kind of Linen, so pure, natural and strong. We found this fabric in Paris. We are very proud we can give the fabric a new life.

Our Linen recycle project | You’ll find some small vintage details all over the piece. Also hidden treasures like the beautiful tablecloth’s stripe.

Our garments are always made from upcycled, deadstock or organic materials. All made by hand. Like this Purotekuta jacket, the black watch waffle fabric we found was used for high end furniture.

A piece of art | In my opinion, clothing can just as well be a piece of art. A special item that deserves the time to be looked at, cherished and enjoyed. Where aging doesn’t equal decay but just adds something to the story of a piece.
