Language Centre (University of Groningen), Groningen Videos

Videos by Language Centre (University of Groningen) in Groningen. The Language Centre offers courses in a range of languages to a variety of clients: students, staff, companies, government institutions and all others who are interested. We also provide testing services and we can translate, correct and write your texts.

At the Language Centre, we focus on connecting nationalities through language. We know that it’s not only language that brings people together, but also a country’s cuisine! We visited Ukraine food in Groningen to give you a taste of Ukrainian culinary traditions.

In 2022, three Ukrainian women introduced Groningen to a taste of Ukraine with their successful restaurant, @Ukraine Food. This year, they have expanded with Tasty Traditions by Ukraine Food, a new café-pastry shop. As you step into Tasty Traditions, the smell of freshly baked treats fill the air, and Ukrainian chefs are busy decorating cakes and making traditional dishes. Valentyna, one of the founders, shared her enthusiasm about the rich Ukrainian cuisine.

Valentyna explains that in Ukrainian households, it is common to keep dishes ready in the fridge for the family. A standout among Ukrainian delicacies is Medovyk (honey cake). This dessert features thin layers of cake infused with honey and cream that melt in your mouth. Doesn’t this sound amazing?

Tasty Traditions also serves various savoury delights that showcase Ukrainian cooking. Varenyky is one of the most traditional dishes, and a favourite among families to prepare together. This filled dough dish often highlights the use of fresh herbs, such as dill or parsley. Dining in Ukrainian culture is a unique experience, according to Valentyna. Tables are filled with dishes to be shared, making it a social occasion with something to savour for everyone!

If you’re interested in learning more about Ukrainian language and culture, we offer two beginner’s courses in Ukrainian. Valentyna herself has improved her Dutch skills through courses at the Language Centre!
