More evidence that not every piece I make or even start make it all the way. Far from it! So many of them flop like this one or crack or just don’t make the cut. Working with large pieces, especially in porcelain is tricky business. But being a ceramist, you learn to except the failures as a part of the process. In the beginning, you think to yourself “If I work hard enough, it’ll get better and eventually I’ll figure it out.” And it does get better if you keep at it. But it never goes away. The flops, the cracks, the glaze problems all get better in time. But they never go away completely. Failures, you learn, are a part of the process. And an important part too for two reasons. First, it teaches the ceramist humility. And second, makes you appreciate the pieces that do make it. Not unlike the people in our lives. One of the most important pearls of wisdom clay teaches you…

You know how some people are reeeeaaaally clean when they cook, paint or work on the wheel? Yeah, not me! 😂😂😂 When I work on a large piece like this one which I used 20 kg of porcelain to make, I need to remove the splash pan (the white bowl around the wheel used to catch the slip when one works on the wheel) because the batt I use to@make large pieces is too large for the splash pan. This is pretty much the end result every time I make a large piece… Thankfully I have very good mop and I got very good at mopping up the mess. 🧹🧽 Working towards my next solo show, which will be in New York!! 🍎 These large pieces have a tendency to crack in the kiln so I’m crossing my fingers for a successful series of firings for the show at Zetterquist Galleries during Asia Week in September.

So happy and grateful life is starting to return to a kind of normal.
