Why "panaro"?
Panaro is the Neapolitan term for basket, commonly made of wicker, and has been used for generations across the districts of Naples. A panaro is lowered from balconies or windows to allow passers-by to give and receive to and from those in their homes above.

During the COVID-19 quarantine in Naples after donating a hot meal to a homeless man in a panaro from their balcony Mrs. Pina Andelora and Mr. Angelo Picone came up with the idea of establishing the "Panaro solidarity" initiative. Instead of lowering one panaro two baskets are lowered to street level. One meant to be emptied while the other to be filled with basic items.
This is symbolised by Dr. Giuseppe Mercati (the doctor of the poor people ) who said "who has the chance will contribute, who does not, will receive".

Panaro is not only the object that transports benefits to others, it represents a concept of selfless solidarity, a principle of sharing and mutual self-regulated support.

The material of a panaro, intertwining wicker threads, symbolises the ties within our society; it represents the individual threads that collectively constitutes a solid structure. A solid structure not only of the object, but also of the values which we have found in the panaro.

Soon the first crowdfunding initiative (and the related FB event) supported by Panaro - A Basket of Mutual Aid (https://www.facebook.com/panaro.mutualaid) will be launched, involving both Italy and the Netherlands: everyone who makes a donation and is based in the Netherlands will receive basket ("panaro") of products as a reward from small Italian producers and cooperatives with a social purpose. A form of solidarity in these hard times. It is not yet possible to travel to Italy, but through this initiative it is possible to receive delicious, locally produced, quality products from Italy!
