About Me
Who am I?
I’m a Canadian geek living in the Netherlands. I’ve always been a creative person, always busy with all sorts of crafty projects, but my first love is sewing. As a child, I would always look forward to Halloween — finally we can dress up! And my grand-mother can attest, I was always playing dress-up somehow… Growing up, I enjoyed participating in plays, dance recitals. You could say I love being on stage.
How did I end up joining the cosplaying community?
My first cosplay was not quite as outlandish as my latest creations. It was well-made, but it wasn’t very eye-catching. But this was also how I intended it to be. I didn’t want to attract any attention, I was so unsure, frightened even, to be entering the cosplay world.
After attending Imagicon 2014 and seeing all the wonderful costumes people were wearing, I decided I’d have a go at it. I bought a few sewing patterns, looked up some accessories online, took a dive in my fabric stash… and voilà, my first cosplay: the Eighth Doctor (Doctor Who), based on the outfit worn in the minisode The Night of the Doctor. I wore it last year at Antwerp Con and *one person* (a wacko Eleventh Doctor wearing a fez) actually recognized my character and gave me a hug saying “DOCTOR!” It made my day!
I wore it again at LFCC in July, as it was my one and only cosplay at the time. Perhaps some people recognized it, but no one asked for a photo, and I really just blended in the background. Again, I didn’t mind. I was happy just being an observer, admiring other people’s cosplays, while at the same time being part of a community that felt like home.
