One of our colleagues, professor Kristin Henrard, has co-edited a book that critically explores the achievements, limits and prospects of the two 2000 Equality Directives of the EU: one focusing on race and ethnic origin and the other covering the remaining four prohibited grounds of discrimination introduced by the Treaty of Amsterdam, namely religion, sexual orientation, disabilities and age. The volume thus sets out to capture EU anti-discrimination law beyond gender.

Our colleague Francesco Pennesi has recently published an article in European Papers - A Journal on Law and Integration.
The article analyses the judicial and political accountability of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) in light of the seminal Mallis and Ledra cases. It seeks to determine to what extent the intergovernmental nature of the ESM has shielded its activity from the accountability mechanisms established within EU law. It then assesses whether the Proposal, recently issued by the Commission, to transform the ESM into an EU body, the European Monetary Fund (EMF), would improve the accountability of this body and its policies.

On 16 November, our colleague Dr. Violi is organizing an international conference at Erasmus University:
The Era of Disintegration: Taking Stock of the Dynamics of International Economic Governance in the First Two Decades of the 21st Century
International economic law and EU law have played an enormous role in enhancing economic integration and international cooperation. However, they seem to have lost part of their integrationist force. International and regional economic regimes seem in fact to be both sustaining and nurturing patterns of disintegration. Brexit, the Euro crisis, the US challenges to multilateralism, environmental disruptions, and resource-cursed States are only a few examples of how disintegration dynamics are unfolding rapidly at various levels. On the 16th of November, academics and practitioners from the fields of law, economics and philosophy of economics will gather together in Rotterdam to analyze these patterns of disintegration, trying to discern the paradox by which the very instruments and mechanisms that were introduced with the aim of achieving an ever-closer integration may have actually spurred centrifugal and structural fragmenting tendencies.
This conference is organized within the framework and the support of the Erasmus Initiative for Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity.
For more information do not hesitate to contact [email protected]
16 November, C-Building (Theil Building), 09.30-17.30

EU-Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, speaking at Erasmus Studium Generale.
Dr. Florin Coman-Kund, member of our Department, has recently published a monograph on the topic of EU agencies’ international cooperation.
The book offers an all-embracing investigation into the so far unchartered role of EU agencies in EU external relations and on the international plane. It addresses legally problematic issues regarding the scope, design and limits of EU agencies’ international cooperation, the status of these bodies as global actors as well as the legal nature of their international cooperation instruments. In doing so, the study maps out EU agencies’ international cooperation legal framework and practice, advances an innovative legal-analytical blueprint for assessing EU agencies as global actors, and it examines through three carefully selected case studies the complexities of EU agencies’ daily international cooperation.
