On Monday, an enormous design drawing measuring six by twelve meters by architect Pierre Cuypers was rolled out for the first time at our Research Center. It is a preliminary study, in eight parts, for the Rembrandt and His School (Rembrandt en zijn school) tile tableau intended to decorate the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. â â The drawing was originally made at Cuypers' studio in Roermond and provided the starting point for the technical drawings by the company Villeroy & Boch, which manufactured the tiles. â â Due to the drawingsâ size and fragility, they have rarely been rolled out since the Rijksmuseum was built in 1885. As part of Disclosing Architecture, this design and eleven other âXLâ drawings by Cuypers and being examined for the Rijksmuseum for possible restoration. â â Disclosing Architecture is a long-term initiative about the restoration, conservation and digitization of the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning.

Now online! The whiteprint's introduction to architectural design practice. Curator and archivist Clara Stille-Haardt examines the whiteprint's traits and significant base on artifacts from the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning that Het Nieuwe Instituut manages. Why have architects so readily embraced this reproduction technique for over 100 years? How did they use the whiteprints? From what discipline does this reproduction technique originate? And what were its ramifications for architectural design? Together with The Blueprint and The ZIP, this essay contributes to the Invented from Copies research project, established as part of Disclosing Architecture, a long-term programme for improving the visibility and accessibility of the National Collection.
