How the chōchin is used in Toro Nagashi
Every year the Obon or just Bon festival, a Buddhist festival, is celebrated for three days in late August.
During, thousands of Japanese lanterns are set afloat to honor the spirits of one’s ancestors, also known as the ceremony of Toro Nagashi.
🏮The Chōchin to guide your way🏮
The Japanese paper lanterns or the chōchin goes all the way back to the 16th century.
It was more commonly used for its practical usage, but over time, brightly colored chōchin came to be used in ceremonies to welcome the gods, spirits or souls of ancestors.
The Devil is in the details👹

Let’s not linger in the past
The days of the samurai have passed a long time ago.
But the spirit lives on, especially through the Japanese martial arts.
One in particular standing out is the martial art Kendo.
This particular martial art is still very much used in today's practice in Japan, such as the police and in universities where it's considered as big a part of the culture like football in the west.
A little knowledge imparted to you
You’re welcome…👹
What do you think, the katana or the long sword?
Which one would you prefer?
Have your accessories looking sharp⚡️⚡️
Not just for bad hairdays
Welcoming into our collection is the accessory MUST HAVE!
Our Chochin Beanie comes in two versions: the Fisherman and classic style.
The chochin lantern was meant to light the dark days, to ward off evil and welcome the gods. ⛩

‘Clothes Maketh The Man’
“The samurai’s helmet provided the best opportunity to display the wearer’s individuality, with flamboyant designs sported by creative or attention-seeking samurai.
As most samurai chose their armour based on personal taste, rather than having a uniform look, further identification was required and provided by small coloured flags called ai jirushi that were attached to the back of the helmet, the left shoulder and to the front right waist area.
The ai jirushi often carried personal information of the samurai himself. Should he be killed in battle and his head be taken, his body would be identifiable and his opponent would know whose head he had taken back to camp for registration.”
Passage from the book ‘The Battle of Sekigahara: The Greatest, Bloodiest, Most Decisive Samurai Battle Ever. ‘
When we think of SAMURAI, the first thing that comes to mind is their imposing, beautifully crafted armor.
It was meant to strike terror in those who opposed them in battle. Moreover, the attention to detail that was put into these yoroi was mindblowing. Despite each ornate detail of the yoroi, each piece served a purpose and all to give more mobility.

Miyamoto Musashi slashing a tengu - Tsukioka Yosh*toshi
*toshi
It takes two to tengu👺👺
The Tengu physically appears in many forms, but that is also because there’s two different versions of the Tengu.
There is the Kotengu. This type usually is depicted as large birds with human-like characteristics. Also these are the ones that cause the most misschief and trouble.
Then there is the Daitengu, that are much larger and look more human-like, dressed in the robes of a monk, with a red face and a long and ph***ic nose (the longer the nose, the more powerful they are).
This type of tengu is often more seen as god-like sages in the mountains.

Kasa-obake☂️👀
There have been many new iterations of the look of the Kasa-obake, but these are the older pieces that give a sense of how people viewed this tsukumogami.
Honestly, how could you not love this lil’ guy.
-obake -kozo
It just wants to give you a little lick 👅👀
These yokai are mostly also considered tsukumogami, which are spirits that live inside of tools or other everyday products. When these items become discarded, the spirits can become sad, revengeful or angry.
In this case the kasa-obake is a friendly and playful creature that love to play pranks.
Their favorite prank is sneaking up to some unsuspecting victim to give them an oily lick on the back of their neck.
