Translation of my surname (van) Schoonhoven = Beaux Jardins. ‘Songs-that-Linger’ is about my gigs and performances, ‘EUMETRIS’ is about my studio recordings with my friend Hans Lamboo and ‘Beaux Jardins’ is about my solo studio recordings.

When singing with fellow musicians it has always been my wish to have it on the setlist, but the harmonies in this song seem to be too much of a challenge somehow. So the only solution for me is to do it like this.

When my stepdaughter asked me to sing this song at her wedding ceremony back in 2019, of course I felt so very honored, but knowing the original Foo Fighters heavy-rock version it felt like an impossible challenge. This song is so very much not my repertoire! I’m glad my son knew all about power chords so in the end we had lots of fun rehearsing and finally playing it at the wedding and it all went really well. Somehow I felt the self-flagellating need to keep this song on my setlist and record it in my own way. Now I love it!!

The BarnsTone Project is an occasional cooperation between Hans Lamboo (various instruments & backing vocals) and Bart van Schoonhoven (lead and backing vocals & acoustic guitar). We met in 2003 and with our band Eumetris we released the albums “412nd” (for one second) in 2005 and “The Midnight Laudrette” in 2019.
This song “Save Me – So I Can Save You” is significantly different from the EUMETRIS repertoire, that’s why we decided to use another name for this project.
Many thanks to:
Nellie van Schaick for playing bass guitar,
Danny de Roo for playing drums,
Rob Smit for mixing the audio,
René van Hugten for shooting and editing this video.
Special thanks to TOOLBOX for hosting us on their premises in Emmen, The Netherlands. They allowed us to film in one of the remaining buildings of the former zoo at the Rensenpark.

Don’t Dream It’s Over is a classic one from Crowded House written by Neil Finn. Performing this song for an audience has always been a no go area for me because the original recording has such a special sound and specific guitar stumming that I’m not capable of. But when I saw this video Neil Finn performing this song with only an acoustic guitar I thought: what the heck, why not?

It was really nice Hans Lamboo helped me out on this video. We met each other back in 2003 and two years later our band Eumetris released the album ‘412nd’ (for one second). In 2019 we started the next EUMETRIS music project, by then Hans had moved to the northern part of the country. While we were 150 kilometers apart, we recorded the album ‘The Midnight Laundrette’ by sending audio files back and forth.
That’s why recording this video has been sort of memory lane sending video files back and forth the same way as we did back then.

It’s very special to me singing one of my most favorite songs in a scene that my dear wife Loes created with all kinds of things she found on beaches, in forests and in our toolbox. For example the boat in this video is actually a painted walnut shell.
Boat On The River was written by Tommy Shaw, member of Styx. Somehow it feels like he wrote this song especially for me to sing. That’s why it has always been the opening song of my gigs over the years.

I'm so proud and I must admit a bit flabbergasted as well. I realize I never had such a large audience before as I do now. On my 'Beaux Jardins' YouTube channel my video's are being viewed for more than 1000 times a day and the number is increasing everyday.
When all my gigs were cancelled due to covid-19 I decided to stop with my solo performances. At a certain age it was getting too much of top sport to keep the quality of my voice at the level I want for a 2 hours performance that never occurs. But having a setlist of more than 300 songs it feels like such a waste to just leave them as files on my computer and never ever do anything at all with them again.
The initial plan was to make audio recordings of the most favorite ones as some kind of final musical achievement. But why not focus on video's as well and at least reach a few other people. I've never imagined making video's would be so much fun to do and they would reach so many people around the world.
Thank you all for taking the time to watch my video's and I hope I will be able to keep recording a while longer with a lot more video's.

I have always wondered how it is possible that a man with such a croaking voice can write such beautiful songs. Although I have always been quite an admiror, until recently there were no Bob Dylan songs on my repertoire. The one and only reason is that especially his early songs very often didn’t fit on one page so they were too hard to learn by heart for me. For me synonymous with Dylan is ‘streight from the heart’.

This song is from my 'Like Simon' project. Most of the songs in this project are written by Paul Simon, so for me this is a tribute to him!
Scarborough Fair is a traditional English ballad upon a possible visit by someone to the Yorkshire town of Scarborough. The song implies the tale of a man who instructs the third party to tell his former love, who lives in said fair town, to perform for him a series of impossible tasks and then he would take her back into his affections.
In these ‘Ukraine War’ times it seems appropriate to leave part of the lyrics in it from Paul Simon's anti Vietnam war song ‘The Side Of The Hill’ that Simon& Garfunkel added very gently and carefully to the song.

Just to explain. I often get the question: Why Beaux Jardins?
One of my older brothers has always been quite francophile. In his early twenties he even planned to go to France for good. Then we thought of which name he should use - you’d better not use the name Van Schoonhoven overthere. One of the options was to just translate our name into french: Beaux Jardins. Somehow I have always kept that name in some remote corner of my mind.
When I recorded a few songs with my son Jelmer about ten years ago, it felt obvious to use that name. And since then I used it for all my audio and video recordings. In hindsight I can say that was not a very smart idea. Once you search Beaux Jardins on Youtube you will see hundreds of the most beautiful gardens, but Bart van Schoonhoven? ……No Way. But putting Bart behind that search string you will see my channel coming up.

Last February 3d it was 30 years since my brother Frans died of AIDS, just one day before his 45th birthday. The whole world knew about his homosexuality but there was never a real ‘coming out’ for his own family. I met my siblings only once or twice a year and this subject was always carefully avoided. In the end when Frans had been ill for quite a while I realy had to force myself even to intend to go and visit him, but sadly enough far, far too late; death didn’t wait for me.
At his funeral a fado was played that realy cut me through the heart. I have been trying to sing that fado with my own lyrics but that realy didn’t suite my voice. So I wrote my own song, but very much based on that fado. It’s about what and how I felt wandering around his house for the very first and the very last time.

Dream Your Fairy Tale.
When I was writing this song it felt too soft and sweet for me and I almost threw it away. But on the other hand it felt lullaby-ish which I never experienced before and inspired by the intriguing and melancholic harmonies of The Lasses I heard all kind of beautiful sounds and voices in it, so I kept going on. In the end when I was recording it, I discovered I’m definitely not The Lasses, but with the beautiful string arrangement from my dear friend and fellow Eumetris member Hans Lamboo it turned out to be a pretty nice song.
