Vizsla Kennel in Amsterdam

We are a small family kennel devoted to our lovely vizsla Etna. We expect a beautiful litter in early August 2020.

Our goal is to breed an excellent continuation of Etna's line and let healthy, beautiful and loyal vizslas into this world.

On teak protection.

Nature is waking up and I would please ask the dog owners to be a bit more careful during these warm months as your usual safe park might be a hidden lounge zone for teaks that sit there and wait for a doggo to pass by and cling to its warm skin. Some areas are more dangerous than the other. Until last year we had never experienced a problem in the parks in and around Amsterdam and yet I timely spotted one ugly blood sucker on my vizsla Etna.

I would advise to always check your dogs after a walk, especially if you had an escape to an unknown area. Teaks love the warmest parts around a dog’s hips and ears. Should you spot a teak, remove it carefully with the tweezers (don’t buy any plastic teak-removers, just get a solid metal eyebrow pincet that would do the job). You always remove a teak by unscrewing it counter-clock wise(!). Make sure you have it fully removed leaving no parts of a teak under the skin. Burn or destroy it afterwards. Disinfect the wounded dog’s skin. The skin could look slightly red and even a bit swallen. Have an eye on this spot, consult your vet in case of doubts.

It’s also a good idea to use preventive products. We have had a positive experience with Seresto halsband. This is a rubber collar that you adjust on your dog’s neck and let him/her always run with it. You don’t take it off. It comes in two sizes, 8kg for the rest, including a vizsla. There are also many anti-teak liquid drops and they could serve as a complimentary prevention beside this collar in case you plan to visit a high-risk teak zone.

Stay healthy and enjoy the runs!
Cheers!

In his famous book, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote that he had a serious reason to believe that the planet from which the little prince came is the asteroid known as B-612. The asteroid has only once been seen through the telescope. That was by a Turkish astronomer, in 1909. On making his discovery, the astronomer had presented it to the International Astronomical Congress, in great demonstration. But he was in Turkish costume, and nobody would believe what he said. Grown-ups are like that...

We also have a serious reason to believe that our puppies arrived from a different planet. To make sure they can live with grown-up humans on planet Earth we had to get each of them a pet passport with a vaccination stamp and a chip number. Because grown up love numbers... However, what we intentionally leave blank and up to new owners is a mystery of the exact origins of their little prince or princess. We are sure that each of these ginger hearts has a lot to tell about it to his/her new master in the years to come.

First visit to a vet at week 6 - done ✅
All our puppies were amazingly brave. We are so proud of them.

Etna and Juno met in June...They planted the seeds of love to harvest wonderful nine puppies by the end of summer. They are six weeks old now.

We demand freedom and food from the government. And we demand them NOW!

All our puppies will get a full pedigree with information on the predecessors from three generations back. On Monday a specialist from Raad van Beheer, the main cynology institution in the Netherlands, took a DNA sample from each puppy’s mouth. The results must prove that they all come from mama Etna and papa Juno, who are both purebred shorthair magyar vizslas. We would like to look into Eddie’s results in particular though as we have noticed some funny resemblances here 😂🤦‍♀️

Big hug to all of you!

As a breeder we witnessed a miracle of birth of our puppies and watched how close they were to their mama in the beginning, how they opened their blue eyes for the first time and how fast they are growing now... However, one highlight will remain the most special for us in this journey. This was in seeing how the puppies met their future owners. All our families were invited twice - at 3,5 weeks to have the first touch & feel experience with the crowd and then later at 5 weeks to finally choose The One.

Call it chemistry, or love at first sight, or anything you believe in, but there was an undeniable connection between a puppy and a human. Our boys were very clear about whom they chose even at the age of 3,5 weeks to once again prove it at week 5. The girls made up their mind by week 5 as we had to interpret whether their initial “yes” is still a “yes” two weeks later... 😂 We think the dogs might share the same problem as we humans do: men are from Mars, women are from Venus.

However, by now we are absolutely confident there is a true match between each family and its puppy.

Usually kids dream to drive their father’s car one day or to wear mom’s high heels. Our vizsla puppies went beyond dreaming very fast as they fully occupied their mama’s bed and started to play with her toys.

After two and a half weeks on maternity leave mama dog Etna is now getting back to her normal life in our pack. In the first week she was overly dedicated to the puppies and she had my full support and understanding. However, she no longer sleeps with her babies inside a whelping box, neither would she now rush to the little squeakers upon hearing the noise. She would just stay calm on a balcony with me where I would have my morning coffee with a toast. Some cheese falls off that toast on the floor. She knows, it always does. This is why she is there. Our walks are getting longer, and she shamelessly insists on some extra ones like walking to a bakery with me. How does she know it's a bakery this time? Well, the dogs just know...The other night we were rushing home to the babies, and as we were passing by a restaurant with a nice summer terrace on our way, she almost convinced me to walk in and ask for a table there. For a second I almost gave in because I knew the next possibility to dine out would happen not earlier than October when the puppies eventually leave our nest. By then a glass of rosé with some seasonal bites on a summer terrace would be completely out of place. Anyway, as much as I am a partner in crime in letting Etna off her maternity hook, I had to say No and walk her home to feed the kiddos. And she followed me. Because Etna knows it's now my turn to take care of the puppies and I love them to the moon and back. And I have Etna’s full support and understanding... 😉🐶

21/08/2020

Hello world! I just opened my eyes!

11/08/2020

Last week the magic happened.

The bright Perseids are very spectacular meteor showers which can be enjoyed every August, when the Earth passes through the debris field of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. A thousand year old dust and ice burn up in the atmosphere and produce a rich meteor shower. They say, that the best time to look for meteors is in the pre-dawn hours. This year’s peak will be reached tomorrow morning (August 12). However, even outside this peak time some meteors can be spotted between midnight and dawn any morning a week before and after this date.

We were lucky indeed to spot those meteors in the pre-dawn hours of August 7, when nine of them scintillated at our home as our lovely Etna gave birth to 5 girls and 4 boys. Good news is that these particular meteors do not vanish. They continue to grow strong and to illuminate the life around. This is a miracle. Please welcome our E-litter in this world!

We are approaching the big day and the puppies are almost here. Now looking back at the old pictures of Etna we are so impressed by her natural shape before the pregnancy. She is a beach torpedo. Would you agree?

VIZSLAS ARE EXTREMELY CLEAN.
Of course this photo tells you otherwise and it’s meant to draw your attention. It is a rare occasion, almost an exception, that you would see your four-paws friend losing its face. But look how happy this face is... It is a living proof that a dirty child is a happy child 🤦‍♀️😆

A few things to know about vizslas’ cleaning habits:

-Vizslas can be both long and short-haired. Etna is a short-haired vizsla. During rainy days when most of the parks turn into a big mud spa, Etna shakes it off and by the time we reach our house door her belly is clean.

-Vizslas do not have a typical dog smell. So when your friends enter your house, they are positively surprised that a medium-size dog lives here. The only smell vizslas might have is when you give them a shower and it happens indeed rarely, maybe once in a few months. A freshly showered vizsla smells like a just washed favourite sweater, which is a typical wool smell.

-Vizslas are very clean. They spend quite some time cleaning themselves, almost in a cat-like manner.

-Vizslas shed heavily two times a year, usually it is seasonal, i.e. before a cold season and then again before summer. You won’t miss this time because you suddenly start to see the excess of fur everywhere. It means it’s high time you brushed your vizsla’s shed hair off with a special rubber brush. Etna enjoys it incredibly so that she almost falls asleep. However, when having a vizsla you should be prepared that you will find short red hairs even if you take a break and travel far away. You slip into your sneakers and you find it. And I don’t mind it. It’s heart warming to have something from your vizsla always by your side.

This post is just to say “hi” and to show you that vizslas have their own understanding of your personal space. 😍😆

VIZSLA AND THE KIDS

A lot of people are curious how a vizsla would fit into a family with small children. This type of dog and the kids team up perfectly because both possess an extraordinary emotional intelligence which we as a crowd of adults tend to lose as we grow up. It’s later in life when we start to reason a lot and draw our conclusions based on biases and certain conditions which neither dog nor the kids know of. Their love is unconditional and their energy is pure. What’s good about a vizsla is that it really does know who the leader of the pack is but at the same time this dog can be a family member and it responds very well to other pack members. The key here is to have a family discipline. It means if the family decides that a TV couch for example is not a place for a dog, it must become a rule in the house and all the pack members, including the kids, follow it and also do not allow the dog on a couch. The examples are simple, they all include your daily routine, like sharing the food off the dinner table, lying on the master’s bed, peeing in the backyard instead of a park nearby- but these are exactly these small behavioral things that matter. You all have to agree what you allow and what is a no-go. Once you let your pup do something you can’t blame him/her later for not listening. However, if you set the rules from the very beginning you will be amazed how easy it is to a manage a dog like vizsla within the set frames. Our Etna is extremely monotonous in her evening routine. When we are back from the walk, she eats, cleans herself and falls asleep. No deviations. She could even serve as a role model to your kids who might ask for another 10 minutes of cartoons tonight.

Vizslas are affectionate and energetic. Sometimes there is an impression that only a similar energy level of (A) another vizsla or (B) of a power station could balance that. (C) would be the kids who naturally love to play and spend their time outside. You must be prepared that your lifestyle might eventually change to spending more time outdoors together with your kids and the dog. You will explore dog-friendly parks, woods, beaches. It will definitely be an energy boosted quality time. You should also continue to do what you normally did before having a dog. If you liked to go on a family boat, introduce your pup to this activity early on. If you had people coming over to your place for a barbecue, introduce your dog to the hospitality rules. The same goes for going on a bike, swimming, driving in the car and numerous other activities. Encourage your pup when he or she learns a new side of your family life.

PREGNANCY CONFIRMED!

Yesterday we brought Etna to an ultrasound and we would like to share a video with you that shows what to expect when your dog is expecting. We are completely blown away by this sneak peek of a future life. Aren't you?

MEET JUNO - OUR VIZSLA HUSBAND

By the time we started our search for a potential mating partner for Etna, it was quite clear to us which criteria we would like to see in the future vizsla father of our pups.

The boy should be handsome, healthy and strong, ideally coming from a working/hunting line. Naturally we were looking for a low inbreeding coefficient in our pair. These are really conventional things. However, a bigger challenge by far was to match the characters. We were looking for a mindful, calm and a stable male similar to Etna's mindset. And this we could only judge meeting all vizsla boys in person and spending enough time with them. And so our adventure began.

During 3 full months we have contacted numerous vizsla owners in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. We have travelled across the whole country and have seen more places in the Netherlands than ever before.

Finally, we were lucky to meet with Marjan Louwers - a very experienced vizsla breeder in the Netherlands. One of her boys simply stole our hearts and showed himself as a true gentleman with Etna. They got along extremely well and neither one was dominant. It was a happy day for us to find a true match.

FUTURE OWNERS

Our mission is to find a loving and caring home for our future puppies and to place them with people, who are ready to accept vizslas' unconditional love but also some responsibility and commitment towards the well-being of the gingers.

Vizslas are very clever and mostly easy-going dogs. They understand you without words, quickly learn and devote every minute of their lives to please their owners. At the same time, they are working dogs in the first place, so they require regular and plentiful physical and intellectual stimulation.

As a general rule, you should be ready for at least 1.5 - 2 hours a day of active walks with your dog. More is better. Any day, any season and in any weather. It would be perfect if you love the nature and fancy being outside.

Secondly, vizslas are very attached to their owners and they are upset being alone for extended amounts of time. It doesn't mean, of course, that you can't leave your home without a dog. Gradually, you can train your vizsla to be comfortably alone up to 4-6-8 hours, but this should not be an everyday practice. The ideal setting is when someone is at home during the day (e.g. you have a flexibility to work partially from home or you can shortly stop by during lunch to shake paws). Alternatively, you should consider finding a good daily dog care and/or a dog-walker that you trust.

We would like to meet with seriously interested buyers in person so we can get to know each other and understand your preferences. We want to answer all your questions regarding the breed. In the end we are very interested in finding the best match between your wishes, your personal situation and our puppies. We will do our best to give you a choice among the small pups, but the final decision will stay with us.

It goes without saying that all our puppies will get the best treatment (food, vaccines etc.), chips, EU passports and complete international pedigrees.

OUR STORY

We are a young family living in Amsterdam. In 2016 a beautiful vizsla Etna joined our pack and she immediately stole our hearts. With each day passing by our love and bond has grown even stronger.

She shares with us all our ups and downs. We are united in all our celebrations and sad moments. She travels with us everywhere. Together we visited France, Belgium and Germany, we stayed at the hotels and had a nice dining experience at the restaurants. She accepts every opportunity to stay close to her pack with gratitude and we can feel that emotional connection.

It was obvious for us from the very beginning that we would want to get the second vizsla. We wanted that girl from our lovely Etna, who perfectly balances vizsla energy bursts with some lazy moments. Etna has a very sweet, mindful and curious personality. Despite the fact that vizsla is a very active breed, Etna is emotionally stable, well behaved and an easily trained dog. She wants to please her owner and all the pack members.

So, after 2 years of a careful consideration and planning, 6 months of paperwork, 3 months of choosing the right vizsla boy, we are happy to announce that we expect to welcome a vizsla litter in the first week of August 2020. We want to assure you that we took the whole process with utmost responsibility, especially with regard to health checks and preparation. For us it is not a business, hence there is our strong will to provide a pregnant mother-dog and all her future pups with the best possible care (the best food, vaccination, etc.).

All puppies, except one girl staying with us, will be passed over to their happy owners in the first days of October 2020. The small vizslas will be duly vaccinated before leaving us. They will also have a chip, a EU pet passport and a full pedigree reminding of the noble blood of a pup's parents. But most importantly they will be ready to start their big journey with you. Therefore we want to make sure we find a right match. In the following weeks, before the puppies are born, we will try to answer all your questions regarding the breed. So both we and you know what to expect when expecting 🙂

We still have a few spots on our future owners list. If you want to get a true companion for life and join vizsla family, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best,
Olga & Eugene & Etna
