The Preventive Health Hackathon addresses one of the most pressing issues in our society: reaching and assisting people who experience financial stress, partly due to the increasing energy prices. More and more people in the Netherlands are facing difficulties with the high energy costs, which makes it challenging for them to afford healthy food and exercise.
MSc students can take part a two-day hackathon on the 2nd and 3rd of October to find solutions for this issues. During the hackathon, students will explore how financial services and energy-saving measures can become more accessible. Ultimately, students will have the opportunity to share their ideas to assist Thuis Wageningen, the Wageningen municipality, and their partners in reaching struggling households.
This week, students and practitioners are working together in The Regenerative City Challenge.
Hereās a short recap of the first few days!
On 16th of June the BITT challenge took place!
All participants presented their pitches to the judges and fellow students. The three top teams were IMPACT, end stage kidney failure and jumper knee.
Thank you to all of you for your hard work during this challenge. Sounds fun? Keep yourself posted for future challenges!
As you might have seen, we have changed our name!! Food 4 Health and Safety is the first challenge in the alliance between TU/e, WUR, UU, and UMC Utrecht. However, there are a lot more interesting challenges coming up, and we want to continue sharing about all these challenges. What would you like to work on within this collaboration?
Last Friday we kicked-off the challenge! Together with students from 38 (!) educational background from . Including some inspiring words by Minister Van Engelshoven .
It is 2021! Past year has been absolutely crazy, but we are very happy that we have been learning throughout the year. With the challenge coming up, we are very happy and excited to share the progress of the challenge!
A Mobile Satellite Kitchen (MSK) is a bit different from your everyday kitchen (which you probably have seen a lot of in the past days). The MSK has about the size of a container and can be doubled in size by it's extension mechanism. The kitchen has two steamers, and with only five peopleand two MSK's the amazing team we talked to can provide meals to 500 people!

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is part of this unique collaboration. They are interested in getting more students involved in innovation, by bringing students, teachers and entrepreneurs together. These interdisciplinary teams can collaboratively find solutions to issues facing society. The concept that students will design must meet sustainable, social and innovative criteria, but must also be purchasable in the market. SMEs must be able to deliver what Defence is asking for.
Gabriel is a former participant of a Challenge and therefore he has experience with challenge based learning. He participated in the Urban Greenhouse Challenge and although this is another challenge than the F4HS, the challenge based learning values are still applicable! In this video Gabriel elaborates on the skills he acquinted during this challenge. He notes the importance of integrating various disciplines in the design, to make the concept feasible and scalable.
Time for Halloween! We thought, let's implement something a bit different. We were thinking about what type of foods we eat when a holiday is coming up. How cheesy it might be, we ( and ) like to make some themed foods. So we decided to make vegan halloween protein bars (: Can you guess the ingredients? Let us know!
Welcome to the campus of Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht!
Located in the heart of the Netherlands, UU is one of Europe's leading research universities, recognised internationally for a high-quality, innovative approach to research and teaching. Utrecht University offers a grade range of (under)graduate programmes, on various academic disciplines including Natural Sciences, Law, Governance, Life Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Earth Sciences. Besides the variety of scientific fields, UU also offers a variant international environment with 130 nationalities working and studying together.
In close collaboration and within the same campus, UMC Utrecht is the center of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Utrecht. UMCU is aiming on bringing value on the lives and health of people formulating at the same time the healthcare of tomorrow. The three main key aspects of this vision is multidisciplinarity, building strong networks and having focus on areas that will be contributing.
Let's introduce the WUR, or Wageningen University and Research. The WUR is one of the three universities collaborating in this challenge. The focus of WUR is on the theme 'healthy food and living environment'. All the studies in Wageningen aim to answer one part of the question 'How to feed 10 billion people by 2050 within planetary limits?'. Therefore, the studies range from plant science, animal science, environmental science to food science (and a lot more!). On top of that, we have a very green campus (with a lot of greenhouses and stables), a very cozy city and my () favorite place to be is at the floodplains of the Rhine!
Within the department of logistics within the Ministry of Defence people are trained to safely deliver and provide foods, but also munition and other necessities to the military in the field. This is a very exact task and requires a lot of skill. Food and water are transported to the field over land, water, and through the air. Without skilled people, the military would be left without food and water. It is a highly logistical challenge to organize this correctly, sustainably, and safely. This can be your challenge!

Meet the TU/e! Since we are a collaboration between different universities, we thought it also might be great to introduce the different universities from our perspective. We'll start with the Eindhoven University of Technology. It is one of the 4 Technical Universities in the Netherlands and is very popular among students that want to create technical solutions for everyday challenges. It has great industry collaborations and is known for its many student teams and start-ups. Challenge Based Learning is one of the main goals of the university, to prepare the future engineers for a bright future! Plus, one of my favorite things is that it is not too big, and you get to know a lot of like-minded people .
To serve the military in the field with an enjoyable meal, transport is of high importance! When there is a mission or a large exercise, fresh food will be transported either as frozen prepared meals or as raw ingredients to the mission area. When the food arrives, it will be prepared on site. How they prepare the food? This depends a lot on the circumstances of the mission. Defense is looking for a future proof concept to serve warm nutritious meals in a sustainable way.ā
Before COVID-19 we organized several information session. During one of which we could try the foods that are currently eaten by the soldiers. As you can see the foods are served a bit like they are in a plane! Wondering what we thought? We really liked the dessert and the rice. But not the egg, which had a bit of a weird consistency.
It is very important to get more insight in the concept of food. The perspectives and experiences of military with the food is very important. It is about enjoyment, pleasure, health, nutrition, waste, sustainability, ans so on! Food can be intertwined with our identity and culture. Is there a varied food choice and can military express their preferences for food (think about vegetarian, halal, kosher, vegan)? This discipline is very relevant, just like other disciplines, such as economics or psychology. Join a team and share your knowledge on this topic!
Food technology is a key aspect of this challenge, do you study this or are you interested in this? Then this challenge is for you! It is an opportunity to bring your (hunger for) knowledge into practice and to design a new food concept for the military on a mission. Multiple aspects have to be considered when designing the new food concepts, such as the health aspect, sustainability aspect, food digestion, and the sensory science for example. Make sure to help us solve this real-life problem while working with students from different academic backgrounds! https://www.f4hs.nl/news/pre-register
Mechanical engineering is huge at the Ministry at Defence. Are you in for a challenge? Rack your brain about the best solution for delivering a sustainable, convenient, and safe experience to the military on a mission. Maybe you want to think about how to build an ultimately safe kitchen, or how to provide sustainable heat. Are you already to solve the puzzle? Pre-register now to stay up-to-date! https://www.f4hs.nl/news/pre-register
Next to students, we also need partners, coaches and experts! Do you want to collaborate with the alliance universities and the Ministry of Defence and get inspired by out of the box ideas?
Whether youāre a professor or a small business, being part of a student challenge that tackles a real-life problem means working with the movers and shakers of the future. Do you have knowledge to share in any of the fields this challenge touches, coaching skills to put into good work or want to contribute in a different way, donāt hesitate!
Our story
The food for health and safety challenge is a product of the collaboration between the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, UMC Utrecht and three Dutch universities: TU Eindhoven, Wageningen University, and Research and Utrecht University. The latter four form an alliance, of which this project is the first to be executed. The two Dutch ministries bring guidance and work field experience to this collaboration.
The focus of the collaboration between the three universities and the medical hospital lies on young talent, as well as on impactful fields of study. One can think of fortifying systematic transition of e.g. energy, food, health and circular society. The alliance strives to collaborate with a variety of different external partners.
