Heart to beat

A steep climb out of the village Elos got us on a gorgeous 13 kilometer long and rough gravelroute on the west site of Crete, Greece.

We hebben nog enorm genoten van schiereiland Peloponnesos. Het biedt zo’n beetje alles wat je als fietsreiziger kan wensen: mooi weer, hoge bergen, idyllische baaitjes, campings -die ook in november nog open zijn- en ontelbare koffietentjes. We were crazy enough to take the dry (rocky!) riverbed Rena Dafnon from Leonidio. Phew! But as always, all we remember afterwards is the fun we had on

In the Netherlands there are numerous benches and picknick tables for cyclist to take a rest. In the Peloponnese only the village square have some. It is a challenge to find a spot to take a pauze In between also because of the thorn bushes at the verge. But hey, no traffic, nice scenery and fresh, ripe mandarins (though with extremely tick hard skin) everywhere.

Cycling through the dunes near Glyca was fun. Even at the end of a long day. We were JIT for a cold beer at the campground before the bar closed at six.

Cycling the beautiful island of Lefkada is fun. Most people would probably think of a round tour: along the east and west coast, clockwise or anti-clockwise. But there’s also a cut through the middle, from the north (Lefkada city) to the south (Vasiliki) or vice versa of course. In both cases you cycle from sea level to an altitude of 1040 meters and back down again in less than 44 kilometers. Almost no cars!! We enjoyed it to the max!

Outside the tourist season, during siesta, we have the Greek city Lefkada almost to ourselves.

A steep Greek nameless road, first asphalt, then rough concreet and finally dirt. We zigzagged to stay pedalling. In the end the views made it all worth it.

Montenegro ligt achter ons. We kunnen haar bergtoppen nog zien liggen vanuit het keuken raam hier in Shkoder, Albanië. With a permit in hand, we cycled across -we believe- one of the most beautiful border crossings in Europe, only accessible to cyclists and hikers, over the Čakor pass. We secretly already expected a gorgeous climb with scenic views, but the descent along the Lumbardhi I Pejës river to Pejë was abundantly beautiful!!!

We’re cycling the trail for two days in the opposite direction from the coast up into the mountains. Great views! In a videos on YouTube we heard racers saying then hiked the bike for 5 kilometers. That section is probably in the part we did today in the descent. Even downhill we hiked the bike. Pretty though and rough roads.

The Ciro trail between Mostar and Dubrovnik is quite fun at times if you follow the actual track on gravel as much as possible. Sometimes beautiful, but also some parts are a bit boring. Highlights of the trail? The pitch-dark tunnels over coarse gravel with bats flinging above your head and the charming hotel in the Ravno station building.

Wat hebben we in en van Kroatië genoten! Uiteindelijk twee weken lang. Vies weer, maar vooral veel mooi weer. Eilandhoppen maar ook binnenland. Mooie mensen ontmoet in een ietwat wantrouwend land. Cycling the Dinaric Alps in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was tough getting up to the higher plains and the rocky pathways needed our full attention, but WOW what was it beautiful up there!

We pitched our tent near lake Perucha. From our spot on the almost empty campground we have a great view of the ridge of the Dinaric Alps that forms the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We'll have to get over that tomorrow 😅

On a rest day we cycle! Unpacked of course. We enjoyed the beautiful national park Krka.

After the wonderful Croatian island hopping it is time for some more serious work. We cycle inland and will finally connect with the Trans Balkan Trail.

First asphalt later gravel, always stunning views! The dirt road from Plaza Sveti Duh to Bošana, also named as the coast road along Metajna bay is beautiful! We ignored the D-tour because of the landslides and were happy it was still doable on a (adventure) bike.

On our way to the Trans Balkan Trail we’re island hopping. On the (happy) island Rab, you should hike (or cycle) the trail called Frux. With packed bikes it was challenging because of the loose stones and the ravine on the sea side, but the views are stunning!!

When we think of EuroVelo, we think of neatly signposted, well-paved cycle paths. How pleasantly surprised we were when this EuroVelo8 around the fjord turned out to be a challenging path!

We enjoyed the Slovenian bikepacking west loop to the max today. Sometimes there was no path in sight and we sailed blindly on GPS, but hey:

Cycling through meadows is certainly not the fastest surface to progress, but you always have the 'road' all to yourself.

In the early morning, leaving the thick cold fog behind us, we welcome the sun in the Savinja valley, Slovenia.
