Finally back from the dead !
Got hit by THE virus and damn, it has hit hard !
Anyway, let’s talk whisky !
Today I wanna take a moment to feature this Secret Speyside, which, if you look closely, is about what might be my most hated Scotch distillery.
Looking at you Glenfarclas 🤣 Let’s start with why I really don’t like it, and then why I REALLY like this one !
Right off the bat, I recognize it’s not a bad distillery, but my tastebuds just can’t stand it. For me, it’s cheap Sherry at its worst, being all dusty and flavourless. It’s like finding a dusty book in a rotten library, and then finding out it’s a very boring book !
I also believe that a good core of Glenfarclas lovers only like it because they offer cheap older age statement and they wanna brag they drink 25yo Scotch. There, I said it 🤣
Now, as much as I vowed to never buy a bottle of Glenfarclas, I’ve also pledge never to miss a Roger’s Whisky release again ! I missed out on the 2 Ben Nevis we’ve had, and I regret it bitterly. When this one was announced I was caught between the trunk and the bark. Then I learned this would be a Glenfarclas, sorry Secret Speyside, aged in Bourbon cask and bottled at cask strength and I was intrigued.
I still get a bit of dustiness I find in regular releases, but it’s more meaty, and pairs wonderfully well with some tropical flavours and a good side of vanilla beam !
End of the day, good job Roger’s Whisky for FINALLY making me like a Glenfarclas 🤣
What’s been your experience with Farclas ? Do you have a distillery people like but that you just can’t stand ?

The Linkwood 11 year old from The Whisky Fellas.

A cool new Italian bottler with some very cool labels. This Linkwood is one the four bottlings in their first set of releases. The whisky has been finished in a sherry butt, and the result is a nice, subtle, elegant dram that's on the sweeter side.

Glendronach Master Vintage 1993
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The year 1993 is supposed to be one of the finer vintages for the Glendronach distillery. This Master Vintage bottling was created to showcase these casks.

I tried a dram of it and was immediately convinced. You can imagine my disappointment when I was told that I just missed the last bottles of these in the Glendronach shop. Fortunately I could hunt one down in the Netherlands.

Roger's Whisky Secret Speyside 13 Year Old

The distillery has to remain a secret, but if you take a good look at the label then you might guess it pretty easily.

This distillery is known for its sherries whiskies, but the whisky that I could bottle here was matured in an ex-bourbon cask. Suddenly the original character of the distillate emerges much more clearly, something special indeed!

Balcones ZZ Top Tres Hombres
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why do I like Balcones so much? I think it's because there's a certain rawness and texture to the nose and mouthfeel that I really like. It reminds me of some of the better Scotch whiskies out there and makes it stand out from other relatively new international distilleries.

The fact that it is not chill-filtered or coloured also helps. And the label ofcourse, who can ignore a ZZ Top branded whisky?

Repost • Vorige week bespraken we de port dundas van . Vandaag leggen we de focus op zijn andere botteling. De caol ila van 12 jaar oud. Tevens afkomstig van Rick (de bottelaar) zijn favoriete eiland.

Voor mij is dit caol ila zoals caol ila hoort te zijn. In het kort zou je de whisky kunnen omschrijven als een vuige caol ila. Een kruising tussen de rook van een uitgedoofd vuur, nat houtskool en de geuren en smaken van de zee.

What's not to like about this? The bourbon cask maturation makes for a classic, light hearted and refined Caol Ila.

Still one of my favourite original bottlings, the Ben Nevis 10 year old. A very nice mixture of some coppery high notes, a touch of smoke and sweet fruitiness that somehow turns into a real character of a whisky. Sometimes I think of my own single cask Ben Nevis bottlings as the deconstructed (and notably higher strenght 😁) versions of this distillery bottling.

Mac-Talla Strata 15 year old
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Morrison distillers is working slowly but surely to establish their new Mac-Talla brand. The Strata 15 year old is the newest addition to the line, and is aged a bit longer and also contains about 10-15% oloroso cask matured single malt.

This is quite a nice whisky. In the nose there's of course the peat and a bit of smokiness. The part sherry casks give it a bit more sweetness but I think the bourbon cask aged part of the blend is still the most dominant feel here.

When tasting, it's a lot of freshness and a very nice, rounded mouthfeel. At 46% it's bottled at a strength that makes it attractive for a larger audience.

Well this Campbeltown hidden treasure - Roger's Hidden Treasures blended malt scotch, just might be what you seek.

This deliciously vibrant six year old blend is bottled at 54% abv. and the flavour matches the label. Funky, bright and lots of detail.

The nose presents the higher proof with a vegetal funk that is underscored with hints of salted pretzels, and the palate bounces between sweet and spicy towards a very long finish. From start to finish, the flavours seem to change the entire way.

The best part of this treasure however, is that there are still a few left on shelves. I found this one , and if you're lucky, you might snag one of the 364 bottles that were released.

Truly a dream dram, 30 Year Old Bruichladdich!

The Mythical Beasts Bruichladdich 30 Year Old is from the increasingly rare older stock from before the temporary closing of the distillery. My company .services proudly distributes this and I can tell you it's magnificent.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Colour: beautiful intense gold
Nose: pineapple, lychee and stone fruit, amazingly complex and refined, something you only experience with really old casks. Fresh baked applepie and some red apple peel. After 30 years in the cask there's still an incredible freshness and even exotic fruit impression in the nose.
Taste: Incredible creamy mouthfeel. Sweetness of ripe pears, mango. Quite an alcohol kick. Each sip is very rounded, not drying at all.
Very long finish, this seems to go on and on and on. Truly a dream dram!
