ACASA Archeologen, studenten en eilanders onderzoeken sinds 2023 het verleden van Terschelling in het participatieve archeologische onderzoeksproject ＣＡＲＥ Ｓｃｈｙｌｇｅ. De verhalen die zij opgraven vormen aanleiding voor Sjoerd Willem Bosch en Jesse Verdoes om het onzichtbare landschap verder uit te diepen en hun bevindingen te vertalen naar de installatie 𝓓𝓸𝓸𝓻𝓰𝓻𝓸𝓷𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰 in de duinen voor het OEROL Festival. Humanities Education Award 2024 Every year, the Faculty of Humanities awards an Education Award to a course that is innovative or uses inspiring educational methods.

And we're off! With words of welcome from the Dean and ACASA archaeologist Gert Jan van Wijngaarden in the beautiful venue of the Zuiderkerk, the 20th International Aegean Conference has started! The first order of business was an inspiring keynote lecture by Tom Tartaron of the University of Pennsylvania offering a comprehensive perspective on the "Water-Worlds of the Aegean Bronze Age"

Afgelopen vrijdag was de UvA gastheer van de jaarlijkse OIKOS Dag. De OIKOS Publieksprijs werd uitgereikt aan de Vlaamse classicus en onvermoeibare bruggenbouwer tussen de Oudheid en het heden Patrick de Rynck: van harte gefeliciteerd! Met de OIKOS Scriptieprijzen gingen Charlotte van der Voort (Leiden, GLTC) en Kevin Hoogeveen (UvA, Oude Geschiedenis) aan de haal. Ook voor hen onze hartelijke felicitaties! Erik-Jan Dros presenteerde zijn Geschiedenis van 25 Jaar OIKOS (gratis the downloaden op https://www.rug.nl/research/research-let/oikos/about/25-jaar-oikos.pdf). We kijken terug op een volle en geslaagde dag!

Our 4D Research Lab has made a number of fantastic historical reconstructions showing what the University Quarter at the Binnengasthuisterrein in the city centre of Amsterdam used to look like. As the area is receiving a make-over, with the new University Library set to open in September 2025, it is great to have such a tangible connection to its past. The project was recently launched with a talk by Tijm Lanjouw. You can access the content on the website, or on location (look out for the signs and QR codes)!

Bericht van Bert van der Spek voor EOL-leden en andere belangestellenden

Zoals u misschien weet, is onlangs in Leiden aan de Witte Singel een nieuwe Humanities Campus gebouwd. Het NINO, waarmee EOL zeer nauw verbonden is, gaat in juni verhuizen naar dit nieuwe gebouw en EOL verhuist mee. Helaas krijgt EOL daar geen magazijnruimte meer. Daarom moet ons huidige magazijn op korte termijn leeggeruimd worden.

We bieden alle EOL-leden de mogelijkheid om tussen 1 juni - 1 juli langs te komen om nog aanwezige oude publicaties gratis mee te nemen. Deze zullen in dozen neergezet worden bij de ingang van de bibliotheek van het NINO en de hal voor de ingang. Het betreft vooral oude publicaties uit de MVEOL en JEOL reeksen en nog enkele oude nummers van Phoenix.

Was Xenophon a war reporter? And what’s the difference between descriptions of war in historiography, journalism, and political consultancy? Anyone interested in these questions is welcome to an exciting guest session of the UvA/ACASA seminar “War in Antiquity” convened by Konstantin Klein and Ewan Short: ACASA teacher Luuk Huitink will be in conversation with Francesca Maretta, an acclaimed war reporter and political consultant with 25 years of field experience in Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Palestine and East Africa. They will both give short talks on narratives of battle and war, while the main part of the session will be a moderated discussion between them and the audience. The seminar session will take place this Friday (17 May) from 11:00-13:00 at Bushuis (F1.14).

Yesterday was the grand opening night of the exhibition, "Paestum, City of Goddesses", at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, with lectures by, among others, ACASA members Imme Laseur and Jan Paul Crielaard on Paestum's Greek roots. The exhibition will run till August 25.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing our world...” says Konstantin Klein, lecturer in Ancient History at the UvA and a specialist on inscriptions. But can modern Machine Learning truly revolutionize seemingly old-fashioned disciplines like epigraphy? Konstantin and his colleague Dominik Michels from TU Darmstadt/KAUST lead a multinational team of researchers who are proving just that!
Their ground-breaking research focuses on the Panamuwa-Inscription, written on the statue of the weather god Hadad from the Aramaic kingdom of Sam’al. Pioneering an innovative method, they’ve generated synthetic training data tailored to Aramaic letters from the 8th century BCE. Despite minimal real-world examples, their dataset of 250,000 training and 25,000 validation images covers the entire Aramaic alphabet! Stay tuned! In autumn, the team will publish the first decisive new reading of the inscription in collaboration with colleagues from Lebanon and France.

A.s. donderdag 25 april is er een feestelijke avondopenstelling in het
in Leiden van de deze week geopende tentoonstellingen Paestum. Stad van Godinnen en Romeinse villa's in Limburg. Tijdens de opening zijn er bijdrages van o.a. door VU-alumnus Karen Jeneson, ACASA-promovendus Imme Laseur, en ACASA-stafleden Diederick Habermehl en Jan Paul Crielaard. De tentoonstelling is in de komende tijd voor iedereen te bezoeken.

Vanaf volgende week is in het RMO in Leiden de tentoonstelling Paestum – Stad van godinnen te zien. ACASA promovenda Imme Laseur en ACASA hoogleraar Jan Paul Crielaard zijn te beluisteren in de podcastserie die deze tentoonstelling vergezelt. Zij hebben ook meegeschreven aan de tentoonstellingscatalogus. Vanaf vandaag zijn de eerste twee afleveringen van de podcastserie online gegaan, daarna zal er iedere vrijdag om 09.00 uur een nieuwe aflevering bij komen. Deze week is een nieuwe website online gekomen, Waarom Gymnasium, in het leven geroepen door de Werkgroep Klassieken in het Primair Onderwijs, die sinds 2020 werkt aan het vergroten van de toegankelijkheid van het vakgebied van de Klassieke Oudheid en wordt voorgezeten door Lidewij van Gils, universitair docent Latijn bij ACASA. De site biedt informatie aan leerlingen, leerkrachten en ouders van leerlingen in het primair onderwijs en de brugklas over het schooltype gymnasium.

We are very happy to be joined by a new visiting researcher at ACASA, who will be with us until the end of June! Here she briefly introduces herself: 'My name is Carmen Hernández García. I am a PhD student visiting from the University of Seville (Spain), working on a dissertation on the behavioural traits of vocatives and secondary interjections in Classical Greek. In Amsterdam I will carry out a research project on interaction management in dramatic and philosophical narrative monologues under the supervision of Rutger Allan at the Vrije Universiteit'. De dertiende editie van de jaarlijkse Ken-Uw-Klassieken Pubquiz is op donderdagavond 4 april jl. gewonnen door team UvA Acerba van de University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam. In het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden gingen meer dan 220 classici, studenten en docenten, verdeeld in 45 teams, de strijd met elkaar aan. Quizmaster Fik Meijer stelde de kennis van de deelnemers als vanouds zwaar op de proef.

Team UvA Acerba, bestaande uit Ella Slot, Guusje van der Meij, Stephen van Beek, Mark Heerink en Luuk Huitink ging er na een spannende finale vandoor met de wisselbeker, een boekenpakket van uitgeverij Athenaeum – P***k & Van Gennep en uiteraard met de daarbij horende eeuwige roem. De quiz was het grote avondevenement op de eerste dag van de Week van de Klassieken

Last week our senior lecturer in Latin, Rodie Risselada, retired after a long and fruitful career at the University of Amsterdam of teaching Latin literature and researching Latin linguistics. Generations of students owe much to her learning, warmth and generosity. As part of the festivities, Rodie was given a Liber Amicorum in the form of an issue of Lampas, the journal of which she was the editor-in-chief for many years. Thanks to Rodie for everything she has done for Classics in Amsterdam and beyond!
