On the 17th of August, Phelimuncasi tears down Kafé Hærverk in a showcase of gqom and other taxi styles from Durban. 0hne DJs before and after their performance. The MelaKlubb programme at Kafé Hærverk is produced in collaboration between Oslo Mela and Digital Diaspora:

PHELIMUNCASI
Twins Makan Nana and Khera, and Malathon formed Phelimuncasi in 2012 in Umlazi township in Durban, South Africa, as a trio of gqom vocalists.

Their music is captivating and powerful, richly imbued with a vast storytelling tradition reminiscent of South African toyi-toyi: a powerful dance of protest and struggle accompanied by rhythmic singing used during anti-apartheid demonstrations to intimidate police and security forces.

It’s not surprising that Phelimuncasi is asked to perform at many political events for the African National Congress and South Africa’s left-wing Pan Africanist party EFF (Economic Freedom Fighter). They have released three great albums on Nyege Nyege Tapes.

0HNE
0hne is an Oslo-based DJ and visual artist who has played at various venues internationally. Their abrasive mixes combine experimental music genres from the global majority, including techno, gqom, amapiano, house, drill, dub and garage.

On the 16th of August, Glitter55 and Ramy splices forces in an assortment of electro-chaabi, gqom, breakbeats and related Arabic and African electronic music styles. The MelaKlubb programme at Kafé Hærverk is produced in collaboration between Oslo Mela and Digital Diaspora:

GLITTER55
The Moroccan DJ known as Glitter55 began to shine when she arrived in Paris at the age of 24. Her exploration of the world of electronic music began with an unprecedented organic performance at Les Transmusicales in 2018, leading to a series of major festivals in France and abroad.

Originally from Rabat, Manar Fegrouch AKA plays intensely syncopated DJ sets, driven by breakbeats and gqom, sometimes adding a taste of classic chaabi to her performances, but always with her own distinctive bass drums.

Glitter55 is a regular DJ on the radio station Rinse France, has been featured on Boiler Room several times, and has played in clubs around the world for many years. She has produced music with Cheb Runner and DeGrandi.

RAMY
Ramy is a regular fixture at Kafé Hærverk, but also an impressive DJ. In his sets, he mixes psychedelic chaabi, post-chaabi, with techno, electro, afrobeat and more.

Event: Nyege Nyege Remix Oslo
Program: TBA
Venues: Melahuset, Kafé Hærverk and Baba Bar

“Nyege Nyege Remix Oslo” transforms Oslo’s club scene with a two-day mini-festival, featuring Norwegian and international artists. , possibly East Africa’s largest festival, collaborates with Digital Diaspora for this Norway-edition.

Oslo’s club scene is vibrating with a mix of afrobeats, hip-hop, dancehall, reggaeton, on one side, techno, house, and electronica on the other. Think of this mini-festival as a remix, produced by Nyege Nyege and Digital Diaspora, who’s bringing together diverse musical expressions on May 3rd and 4th at Melahuset, Kafé Hærverk, and Baba Bar. Expect a cultural convergence, uniting people not often found in the same spaces in Norway.

Nyege Nyege, the festival in Uganda, with over 15,000 attendees, fosters cultural exchange. The festival played a pivotal role in introducing European electronic club and art music to East Africa while also showcasing African, Asian, Caribbean, and Latin American music in Europe. It’s a transcending platform, connecting traditional and electronic music from various continents.

Since the festival's beginnings in 2015, and before that as a club night in Kampala, Nyege Nyege has spurred a global cultural movement, with the associated record labels Nyege Nyege Tapes and Hakuna Kulala as important playgrounds. They operate from a villa in Kampala with a studio and residency program for artists and musicians spanning various disciplines. The festival’s booking agency ensures artists’ global reach, particularly in Europe, but also across Africa, Asia, Australia and America.

Nyege Nyege is beyond a music festival, infusing its vibrant energy and in the Norwegian context, we also incorporate street theater.

Fact Magazine hailed it as the world’s best electronic music festival, and other notable publications like Resident Advisor, Mixmag, and The Wire have closely followed the festival, often using strong superlatives.

Under the banner Beyond Ama, 'Piano & Afrobeats is challengibg established ideas about - rap, pop and electronic music originating in Africa.

In the UK we call it Ama and in South Africa 'Piano is the pet name for perhaps the biggest form of club music in the world at the moment: amapiano. That Ama and 'Piano are two closely related, yet different movements, illustrates a metaphorical break in communication between the continents.

We are in a new era - a kind of break with the past, comparable to the break in the connection between Ama and 'Piano, between Funk and Hip Hop, between R&B and Rock & Roll, between spirituals and jazz and blues. New connections are inevitable, so now it's time to take what's dearest of luggage with you – musically as well as socially.

With Beyond Ama, 'Piano & Afrobeats, Endre 3000 aims to explore the connections between regional music forms from Africa and the diaspora, such as gqom, sghubu, amapiano, kuduro, batida, tarraxinha, shangaan electro, singeli, electro acholi, cruise, luga-flow, dancehall, balani show, coupé décalé, and new expressions that have not yet been defined. Music that may be pop music in Johannesburg, Kampala, Nairobi, Dar es-Salaam, Accra, Lagos and Luanda and underground music in Oslo, or vice versa.

This night we especially highlight electronic music from The Congo. A journey from Zazou Bikaye, to Konono Nº1, and the last years mindbending junkyard art music by KOKOKO!, Lady Aicha & Pisco Crane’s Fulu Miziki, DJ Finale and also spiritually related, Rey Sapienz & The Congo Techno Ensemble.

17/06/2023

"Throughout the album, sounds mimic the tones of the earth’s natural wonders, from clinking beats that conjure the clattering of rocks to bubbling synths and tuned percussion put through heavy filters that sound as if they have been plunged into the depths of the ocean," A Humming Heart writes about Merge Emerge.
